Jets executive: Manti Te’o “scares you a little bit”

New York Jets senior personnel executive Terry Bradway admits that they are somewhat apprehensive when it comes to Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o.

In an interview with the Jets’ team website, Bradway reflected on the week at the NFL combine in Indianapolis and the outlook for the Jets franchise this off-season. Bradway said that with his struggles in the national championship game against Alabama, his slow time at the combine and that whole fake dead girlfriend thing, Te’o is a player that has the Jets a bit worried when evaluating his NFL future.

“It’s an unusual situation, that’s for sure. I feel bad for him. I mean, the stress of the situation has to have had an impact on his training somehow. I think he’s going to run faster than that at his pro day at the end of March,” Bradway said.

“He’s a good football player,” he added. “I know a lot of us gave him pretty good grades, but when you look at the Alabama game and you look at what’s happened since, it just scares you a little bit. I know their whole defense struggled against Alabama – a lot of missed tackles – they’re a good football team but I think its caused everybody to go back and re-watch and see exactly what we have here. It’s going to be interesting to see where he’s drafted.”

Te’o ran a very pedestrian 4.82 40-yard dash at the combine on Monday. It was seventh-slowest on any linebacker to run the 40-yard dash in Indianapolis. Per Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com, the Jets will not select Te’o in the upcoming draft. Te’o wouldn’t make sense in the first round for the Jets anyway as they hold the No. 9 overall pick in the draft. Presumably he could have been an option for the Jets with their second round selection if he was still available at that point.

  1. Think he scares you now….

Wait till he gets an endorsement from Guess Jeans

  2. I think we all can agree that the Jets’ front office’s ability to appraise talent is stellar.

  3. Manti Te’o after his Jets interview –

“Rex Ryan scares me a little bit”

  4. Yeah, we know one of their top picks that hasn’t worked out very well, does Mark Sanchez ring a bell?

  5. hell of a football player.. cant imagine how much stress u get from going from 2nd in heisman to “overrated” laughing stock of the world within a couple months.

  6. If someone really takes this guy in the 1st round, they should be required to undergo extensive concussion testing.

  7. So, the Jets have officially stated that they feel Teo is a risky pick?

Based on their talent assessments in recent seasons, I would say that this is good news for Teo!

  8. Any team that would select him with a top 15 pick would be doing both him and themselves a disservice. He belongs in a smaller market with lower expectations.

  9. Based on what I’ve read, I think the Bengals are all in on Te’o and will take him in the first round to replace Mauluga.

Unfortunately, I also see Te’o flaming out just like Mauluga. Rey had a lot of games this season where he looked over-matched, just like Te’o did all night vs. Alabama.

  10. With his Alabama bowl game performance, girlfriend case, and now Combine performance, is he even Top 10 in the 2nd Round?!? That’s just a staggering amount of negative evidence to weigh against what was a good college career.

  11. If I were the new GM I’d call this idiot into my office and remind him we don’t evaluate players in the media. The new GM will also remind him of an undersized LB that ran a 4.82 in the combine that he drafted…that worked out pretty well for him…Seahawks Lofa Tatupu.

Jets need to embrace the new mgmt – new direction

  12. The entire Jets organization “scares me a bit” Manti would be a great fit in that circus…The Jets of all teams have a lot of nerve to say anything negative, especially with all their issues and problems.

  13. Unless he blows everyone away at his Pro Day, I wouldn’t be surprised if he fell to the second half of the third round.

Different position than Jimmy Clausen, but remember how far he dropped? and he didn’t have as many problems as Manti.

  14. The Jets are the most undisciplined team in the NFL. Players, coaches, and management simply do not know how to walk away from a camera.

Nothing really wrong with what this clown was saying but it did not need to be discussed.

  15. Overrated to begin with he is now a very late first rounder at best but more likely will slip to the second round which is where he would be a decent value.

  16. Had Teo killed it in the NC game a lot of this stuff would be overlooked but the fact that he choked up against a lot of future NFL players, his slow times and the GF drama I wouldn’t be surprised if he lasted till the mid 2nd rd.

  17. Because you think he’s gay or stupid? One of those answers will get you in trouble.

  18. Everybody is making him out to be bigger than reality. He is an average player, but every 10 minutes the media pumps out another Manti story.
Geez, give it a rest and the guy will just settle in to an average Joe role

  19. Manti Te’o: “the prospect of playing for the Jets scares ME a little bit.”

  20. Seriously as a long time football man-this guy won’t get drafted until at best the third round. Unfortunately he’s a head case and I personally wouldn’t want to play with a guy who you have to worry about is his head all there. Probably more important than that is he’s too damn slow. I don’t care what he does at his pro day-As a scout I would’nt waste my time.

  21. Smokescreen? I hope not, as much as I hate the jets I forget how intense the rivalry with the pats was when they were relevant. I realized that this season and kinda hope they are at least competitive, in all seriousness, you need to have someone to root against, and what fun is that if they suck?
In past years they would have gobbled this guy up but looks like they have a gm committed to turning the ship back on course, getting rid of the overrated vets and toning rex down, just hope it’s not too good.

  22. Teo is a mid round player at best….but dude should be more scared of his own roster and Head Coach…the entire Jets org. is a bad joke led by the fat blowhard.

  23. I can’t wait for him to get drafted by the Bears, just to watch all my friends, who are Bears fans, throw themselves into traffic. Love my friends, but Bears fans are some of the biggest jackasses out there. This will be a little slice of sports heaven when the Bears take him.

  24. I absolutely pray the Jets take him. That would just add to the joke and mess that the planes franchise is. It would be a daily, not weekly circus just like Tebow was. Please keep Tebow too!! How great would that be? Those clowns wouldn’t win a single game with those two National Enquirer headline stories on that roster!!

  25. So can we can assume the Jets want Te’o to slide all the way into their spot in round 2 so they can take him there? This is the time of year to believe the complete opposite of anything emanating from NFL front offices.

  26. I’m not quite sure what difference your speed makes if you are going to get run over when you get to your desired location.

  27. If I’m a NFL GM here’s what I’m thinking when it comes to Te’o: he’s a liar, he’s slow and he’s immature. Nothing is ever his fault. “I was duped” or “I was stressed”. Then you throw in the possibility he MIGHT be gay. Florio will tell you it’s ok and it shouldn’t be a problem and if Te’o were interviewing for any other job it wouldn’t be. But he’s interviewing for the NFL. And it’s still a problem. Let’s say, hypothetically, Te’o decides to come out after he’s drafted. That teams season would be immediately be over. The announcement, while being a watershed moment in sports history, would probably fracture the locker room beyond repair and it would make the distraction that is Tim Tebow look like a hiccup. Other players on the team would resent the fact that all the media wants to talk about is the newly outed LB across the room. Monumental distraction. And frankly the kids play doesn’t seem worth the risk.

  28. Prior to the NC game talk was of him going in the top 5 and possibly No 1 overall. I never wanted him that high for the Raiders, and I’m an ND fan. But this is getting carried away in the other direction with some fans actually thinking he’ll go undrafted. LOL.

Someone will grab him late 1st or first half of the second. The reason he won’t go higher will have little to do with the fake gf drama and everything to do with the MLB position being devalued in this pass-heavy league and the fact he’s a good athlete but was never a Patrick Willis or Brian Urlacher type athlete.

  29. selmonfan 63 compares him to Brian Bosworth. It may be disrespectful to the Boz to make such a comparison. I wish him luck, but here are my thiughts: Due in large part to the hype machine known as Notre Dame, he has been way overrated. It is obvious that there were issues within that golden helmet, and that was without a concussion. He will get drafted, no doubt about it. I look for a washout in a few years, then he can keep his name out there with appearances on dance contests and reality shows. Only in America….

  30. I wouldn’t mind my Eagles taking him in the 2nd, or if he lasts till the 3rd. #4 in the 2nd round is a little high because we don’t NEED an LB, but if there’s no really good CB’s or O-Lineman available, I wouldn’t be too upset.

But I doubt he’d last till #4 of the 3rd round, so its almost all conjecture at this point.

  31. The Jets should be afraid to take Te’o. ESPN nearly wet themselves with all of the over the top obnoxious coverage of Tebow going to the Jets last season.

There is no doubt in my mind that it will get much worse if the Jets take Te’o. Heck, any team in the NFL that takes Te’o is going to have to deal with the over the top coverage.

If there is an NFL owner out there that is more interested in drawing attention to himself and his team than winning, then he ought to march right up to the podium himself and hand Goodell the paper with Te’o’s name on it.

  32. Please tell me when anyone cares or gives a damn what anyone in the Jets front office thinks? This is the same front office that traded up for Mark Sanchez and then locked themselves into him for a ton of money last off season. Same front office that puts an offense out there without a credible running back. Same front office that had a 78 year old Bart Scott on its defense. Same front office that cannot get enough of the back pages of the NY Post and Daily News. Need I go on? The long suffering us Jets fans go through is unspeakable. In my 29 years, I’ve lived to see 3 “successful” seasons end with an AFC Championship game disappointment. Being a real fan is a cruel cruel joke God can play on you. It’s easy to break up with your wife or girlfriend, but for some reason it just can’t be done with a sports team. We just sit around and take the punishment.

  33. I think Teo will scare him more when he picks them off or blindsides their RB or mediocre QB.

  34. Te’o has had a rough couple of months, but it could be much, much worse.

At least he hasn’t had to worry about Kiffin vouching for him.

  35. How overrated could he be if he was 2nd in the Heisman, won the Lott, Maxwell, Bednarik, Camp, Nagurski, Butkus, and Lombardi Awards and was a unanimous first team All-American. Probably one of the best Linebacker seasons in recent history.

This is no guarantee of success in the NFL, but that is a damn good resume that ANY defensive player would be jealous to have.

The kid was embarrassed that he was catfished and THE WORLD found out. He tried to cover it up. Bad judgement, but move on.

He will be a fine professional player and may go to a pro-bowl or two.

NOT a ND fan, too many of those sanctimonious pricks in Cincinnati already.

  36. The Jets are the biggest circus in sports. Terry Bradway is VP of personnel. Obviously he knows what he’s doing. Just look at the talent the Jets have. Don’t think so.

  37. My prediction, he is lucky to get drafted in the third round and even then, he will barely make a splash at the NFL level. He’s just not that good and is slow to boot.

But when he does get drafted, I hope its the Jets. They just don’t seem to be able generate enough headlines in NYC so Teo can contribute so Rex, Sanchez and Tebow don’t have to do it all by themselves.

  38. The tape don’t lie, T’eo is a product of a soft schedule, and a bunch of hype that’s not uncommon at ND (Jimmy Clausen, anybody?)

As for T’eo, he showed at the combine he could focus and overcome the mess he made for himself.

A team will take a shot at T’eo, and probably get good value on paper, but its going to be up to T’eo to prove them right.

IMO, I wouldn’t be risking a 1st rounder to find out, nor anything above the middle of the 2nd, to find out.

  39. I am not buying all of this down on Teo stuff. Clearly his stock has fallen because of the catfishing and his combine but I think some of this is teams simply hoping to push him into round 2, for the Jets if he is in the early second round he’s in trading distance for them.

  40. A match made in heaven. A delusional coach that won’t shut up paired with a delusional guy who still plays hide and seek with his imaginary friends.

  41. This guy was one of the best LB in college football. If it weren’t for the fake dead girlfriend thing half of you people wouldn’t even know who he is.

The only thing that should possibly drop him is his poor performance in the National Championship game, and maybe his 40 time IF he doesn’t do much better at his pro day.

I don’t understand all of the hatred for him. The guy was an idiot and will be embarassed for his entire life because of it. BUT if he ends up as a good LB then no one should care about the other stuff.

  42. At this point, I think it’s a safe assumption that he’s going to be in a Baltimore Ravens uniform this upcoming season. I’d put a cripy $20 on him running a solid 4.65 at his pro day. Whatever has been said about the guy, he’s a hell of football player. It’s really ridiculous to me how he’s been so picked apart, but he’s handled it very well. I think he’d be a great fit in Baltimore.

    =================================================

Oh please. No one viewed Manti as a top 5 pick, let alone the #1 overall except the ND hype machine and deluded Domer fans such as you.

  44. Forget the fake GF fiasaco.

You worry about the kid because A) He was invisible in the Nat’l Title game and B) his combine performance was awful.

That being said, the media lust surrounding him would make him a great Jet.

  45. Anyone who believes the spin doctored story that Te’o was merely an innocent victim of a prank have been catfished themselves by his handlers.

  46. This guy is gonna get devoured in training camp by any team that takes him.

  47. @shaunypoo

Do I really need to name all the Heismen WINNERS who were busts? There is a pretty good list of them, Matt Leinert, Reggie Bush, Cam Newton(somewhat, hasn’t really helped his team any), Mark Ingram, TIM Tebow, Carson Palmer. Get my point? Just because he won awards doesn’t mean he isn’t overrated and going to be a bust in the NFL.

    ——————————

Labeling Palmer, Newton and even Bush as “busts” is kind of ridiculously harsh. Palmer just had another 4,000 yard season (in 14 games). Newton was runaway ROY a season ago. And even Bush made many dynamic plays in helping NO to a Super Bowl and has done a pretty nice job in Miami.

Leinart, yeah. Ingram, OK. And there are others who were NFL busts or who were never even drafted or taken seriously as NFL prospects. So I’m not disagreeing with your premise, but it’s kind of ridiculous to list guys like Palmer and Newton as “busts.”

Nothing really wrong with what this clown was saying but it did not need to be discussed.

The buggest clown in the playoffs was Tum Birdy

Tum Birdy isn’t going anywhere. He’ll have lots of heartburns when the Jets get through with him. 96 of the defensive line is starting to come alive with sacks and he’s coming after Tum Birdy

  50. The problem with this guy is before ND started to win and the girl friend story no one new who he was except ND fans

  51. The new GM will also remind him of an undersized LB that ran a 4.82 in the combine that he drafted…that worked out pretty well for him…Seahawks Lofa Tatupu.

Until the new GM suddenly remembers overachievers with sub lateral/recovery speed and only so-so athleticism fall harder and faster once injured, ibid. Tatupu, jobseeker, 2 yrs & counting.

  52. Book it now
    Manti to NE.

I hate the Patriots but he will be a fit for their system.

Belichick and Kelly played golf together at Pebble Beach and I am sure they discussed Manti at length.

  53. It seems like a perfect fit.

    Manti has an imaginary girlfriend.

Rex has an imaginary superbowl championship.

Actually, I believe he was considered the No. 1 high school recruit (at least on defense) when Notre Dame landed him. So he was on the national radar before he even got to Notre Dame.
