Chargers cutting Takeo Spikes on Thursday

The Chargers will continue to move away from the A.J. Smith/Norv Turner regime by parting ways with one of the most tenured linebackers in the NFL.

Takeo Spikes, a 15-year veteran, will be released today, per a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Spikes, we’re told, plans to play in 2013.  He entered the league in 1998 with the Bengals.  After five seasons in Cincinnati, he spent four with the Bills, one with the Eagles, three with the 49ers, and the last two in San Diego.

Given that Smith is now working for the Redskins and Spikes likely will be available for the 10-plus-year veteran minimum of $940,000, Washington could make a play for him — especially if London Fletcher doesn’t return.

Or, more accurately, if the cap-strapped Redskins decide not to bring back Fletcher and his $5.5 million base salary.

Spikes was due to earn a base salary of $3 million in 2013.

UPDATE 9:31 a.m. ET:  The Chargers have announced the move.  “Takeo is a true professional and a class act,” G.M. Tom Telesco said.  “We’re grateful for his many contributions to the Chargers organization, both on and off the field, and wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Why is it that NFL contracts are designed to be nothing but phoney garbage where both sides toss them aside when it feels convenient?

  2. i remember that game he was thrown out of he was pissed i thought he was going to kill the ref

  3. Seems like a nice guy but you don’t go 15 years without making the playoffs just on bad luck

  4. Always seemed like a good dude when he first came around his play just felt down right violent in his early years. He was just one of those hitters.

I hope he can get on a contender and enjoy his last 1-2 years in the league. He’s paid his dues.

If he does go to Washington that streak of never winning a playoff game will remain safe..

After winning the division with a rookie last season it makes your comment either a low football IQ response or just a good ol fashion Troll one. Hmmmmm

  6. After all these years, I still wish he was a Bengal!
“So, who should we sign to a long term deal…Takeo Spikes or Brian Simmons?”
    “Oh, definitely Brain Simmons.”
    “Yep, sounds good to me”
Yet another example of the talent we let get away….

  7. cue the other teams’ fans saying he would be a good fit with them and- oh look it already started.

  8. Wow, he’s still in the league. retire already. maybe the reason he has never played on a playoff team is him. overrated. if you are that good you will your team to win. he did not. he was horrible with the eagles and then went to two other teams after that. that’s called overstaying your welcome. see ya takeo.

  9. Since he’s a veteran linebacker I think we all knew he wasn’t retiring when we didn’t see him crying all over the TV screen or doing some stupid dance at the end of his last home game.

“probably the best player to ever not be on a playoff team… what a shame.”

Ever heard of Gale Sayers & Dick Butkus?

  11. Wouldn’t mind seeing the Pats pick him up. He can team up with Brandon and I bet he still has a little juice in his tank.

  12. Charger fan here. Love everything Takeo brought the last few years. True leader and tough guy, no surprising they cut him with the youth movement underway. Wish him the best.

In other news, now that he’s off the roster we’ll probably make the playoffs, it’s not superstitious if it’s 15 years.

  13. Crazy that he left the Bengals because he wanted to go to the playoffs. Marvin tried hard to convince him to stay but he wouldn’t.
10 years later he has been to none while the Bengals have been 4 times.
Even still, I would love to see him end his career in stripes and win the SB.
He showed interest in returning a few years back but Marvin wasn’t interested so don’t see it happening.

You likely know better than I do since you are a Bengals fan but I seem to recall that Spikes didn’t want to go though a regime change so when Lewis took over, Spikes wanted out and they gave him his wish. Maybe that’s just how it was portrayed though.

He’s an old school player. I respect that. It’s too bad he never did get to play in the playoffs.

  16. don’t let the ratings monkey’s rhetoric fool you. Washington has no interest in Takeo Spikes. Despite his talents as a great MLB, you just don’t replace what we have for him. Lorenzo Alexander has been a great fill in at linebacker and has gone to the pro bowl as a special teamer. he is a tackling machine and the heir apparent to replacing Fletch. I wish Takeo only the best.

AKA “But he wasn’t good on The Eagles so he’s not good”. Nobody is good on the Eagles. AKA The JV Buffalo Bills.

  18. I smell an Oakland Raider signing veteran minimum of $940,000 and we need depth at that position, Chag Ching! Reggie McKensie will take one of those..

For all the low IQ football fans that make fun of Andy, it’s unfortunate to see one with an even lower IQ that supports him. You obviously don’t understand football if you think that one person, one, just one, is the reason none of the five teams he’s been on didn’t go to the playoffs in his tenure. 52 other players roster not including coaches and you’re saying one guy.

Then you make it worse by saying that he wasn’t good when he was on the Eagles. He was quite effective during his team with the team but an injury resulted in him being cut for the 2008 season. If they were smart and kept him, he would of been in the playoffs. That was the year we ended our slump after the superbowl loss.

  20. He has had a long career and has been a good player throughout his career,I would like to see him at least get some post season wins this year

No he just isn’t that good. Please watch him with the eagle’s. he was not that good. i can explain it to you if you need help. and i can’t stand reid. it is just better to troll the eagles with.

  22. after 15 years on no playoffs you gotta say maybe he was a contributing factor to not making the playoffs.

it’s like when you are little and you get into trouble all of the time and you always say it was the other guys fault. My dad would say : i know it’s not your fault but you just always seem to be there. maybe takeo lovers seperate from the love and realize what this guy is/was. a nice player. nothing more nothing less.
