Harvin trade makes Vikings potential players for free-agent receivers

Dolphins fans? Time to get nervous.

With the Vikings shipping receiver Percy Harvin to the Seahawks the day before the launch of free agency, the Vikings could be looking to replace him via the annual veteran shopping spree. Which could mean that their reported interest in Steelers receiver Mike Wallace will become actual interest -- and competition.

Of course, Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman explained at the Scouting Combine the dangers of spending big in free agency on players who their prior team decided not to keep. But the Vikings have real needs in the passing game, and with few rookie wideouts capable of making an instant impact, the best approach could be to pay an impact player the money that had been budgeted for Harvin.

Besides, Spielman also said the Vikings had “no intent” to trade Percy.

For now, Harvin would be replaced in the starting lineup Jarius Wright, a fourth-round pick in 2012 who did a decent job after Harvin’s season ended with a sprained ankle. The money more likely will be spent on a guy who can stretch the field, which is what the Vikings thought they were getting last season in Jerome Simpson.
