Bears announce four-year deal for Martellus Bennett

On the first day of free agency last year, the Bears swung a trade for wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

They made a splash on the first day again in 2013. The team has announced that tight end Martellus Bennett has agreed to a four-year deal to leave the Giants for a spot on the Bears roster.

Bennett grabbed some of the earliest headlines after free agency opened with a tweet saying that he was excited to join up with Marshall in Chicago before saying that he actually hadn’t agreed to a deal with the team yet. It didn’t take long for that to change, however.

The Bears got very little from tight ends Kellen Davis and Matt Spaeth last season, which made them obvious bidders for the top tight ends on the market. Bennett is coming off a strong year with the Giants after several years where he did more talking than producing for the Cowboys. Davis is due to make $2.5 million in 2013 and Bennett’s arrival could lead to Davis’ departure as the offseason rolls along.

Chicago has also been linked with tackle Jermon Bushrod and guard Brandon Moore in the first hours of free agency, two players who would help an underperforming line and provide quarterback Jay Cutler with enough time to find Bennett down the field.

  1. Are they going to convert him into an offensive tackle to replace their first round bust Carimi? Or is he going to replace Webb… Really like this pick, adds a lot of flexibility for the Chicago offensive line

  2. Well, I hope he lives up to the billing. I am excited to hear they are making a play for Bushrod. I think they could shape the rest of the O line once the left tackle position is settled. Keep it up Phil!

  3. Good for him. I think he would have been better served to stay in the same system for a couple years and then go get paid, but he was a FA now so he had to do what he had to do..

  4. Time for another no name TE to step up to the plate for the GMEN so Eli can make them a stand out player. Hopefully the kid Robinson they drafted last year is ready to step up

  5. We’re there some reports out of NY that the Giants coaching staff didn’t like Bennett’s work ethic very much? Kind of suprised, this guy didn’t do a ton in Dallas, I don’t recall him being a stud in NY, and yet another team is willing to sign him to a 4 year deal. Maybe I have my info wrong, or teams are so desperate for help they will try anything.

  6. Martellus continues to steal money from another club. His act wears out pretty quickly and I’m certain things will be no different in Chicago. He’s all sizzle, no steak.

  7. Great move by the Bears, glad to see they are being agressive in free agency…I’d love to see them get Long or Bushrod for the o-line, then take Tavon Austin and Kyle Long in the draft…And I’m curious to see who ends up as the backup to Cutler moving forward.

“I think they need somebody better than Quitler to throw it to him.”

I think Bears fans find you amusing, in an annoying sort of way.

  9. I love how a troll GB fan, with nothing bad to say about Bennett, will fall back on his typical Cutler-bashing nonsense.

  10. Hearing the Bears signed (or will shortly) Bushrod, too…Great job so far by Emery.
