Eagles release Nnamdi Asomugha

Nnamdi

While it won’t be official until after the league year starts at 4 p.m., today’s the day the Eagles will release cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The move has been coming for some time, but had to occur after the start of the league year for salary cap purposes. When reports came out last week that it was done, reports which were quickly refuted, it was clear it was happening, though the timing was off.

The inevitability doesn’t make it any less alarming, that a player who was so recently at the top of the game is unemployed.

UPDATE 3:46 p.m. ET: The Eagles just put out a statement confirming the move.

“Coach Kelly and I each had a chance to speak with Nnamdi earlier and he took the news with a lot of class,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said. “We expected nothing less than that from him. He has been a true pro on and off the field for this organization and our community and we wish him all the best as he continues his NFL career. We spoke to his representatives at the Combine about his future status with the team and wanted to take time to analyze and make a decision. In the end, coach and I both felt we needed to move in a different direction at the cornerback position for 2013 and beyond.”
