Bush gets four years, $16 million from Lions

Seven years ago, Reggie Bush’s status as the No. 2 overall pick in the draft resulted in a mammoth contract.

Today, Bush did as well as he could, given the market for the position he plays.

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Bush signed a four-year, $16 million contract with the Lions.  The deal includes a $4 million signing bonus and a $1 million base salary in 2013, a $3.5 million base salary in 2014, a $3.25 million base salary and a $250,000 roster bonus in 2015, and a $3.75 million base salary and $250,000 roster bonus in 2016.

The cap charges in 2013 will be only $2 million.  Next year, it moves to $4.5 million.  In 2015, it will be $4.5 million again, with a cap number of $5 million in 2016.

For a veteran running back who isn’t among the very best tailbacks in the game, it’s a solid deal.  The market typically is in the range of $3 million; Bush got $1 million more, on average.

  1. Lions scored today! Hope they can now outscore the the other teams. But heck with Quin and Jones the D may finally be able to play decent and help
    win some games.

  2. “For a veteran running back who isn’t among the very best tailbacks in the game, it’s a solid deal.”

To think that when he was drafted he was going to be the second coming of Sayers.

  3. What a great deal for the Lions. Reggie Bush is exactly what they needed, throw Mikel Leshoure in there and thats quite the backfield.

  4. This contract and the willingness of other FA’s to sign reasonable deals shows how much players respect the Lions and their staff. They sure aren’t going there for the Detroit scenery.

  5. What’s the bid deal…it’s the NFL. He’s on a year to year contract and the he knows and the Lions know he’ll never see 2016. It’s a deal this team needed to make because anyone in draft was far from a sure thing.

Calvin’s prime is now and they needed to find a Best replacement.

  6. If defenses don’t respect Reggie, and he gets to run against 6 and 7 man boxes…..watch out…….If they DO respect him, Calvin will take full advantage. Pick your poison NFL.

  7. Cute little move but I dont see what it has to do with the Eagles and Chip Kellys intricate offense. You are all to bear witness to what we unleash this year.

  8. I am one of those people who think Bush is a very good player and this is a great fit. This guy is sometimes a better catcher than a runner so he can line up in the backfield and easily be motioned in the slot. The only worry is Stafford – dunno which side of the bed he wakes up on a given Sunday.

Great pickup, reasonable price. I am a ‘hawks fan so this is totally unbiased 🙂

When is the last time the Eagles have done anything? Choked in one superbowl in 40 plus years since the merger?

The Eagles and Skins trolls are out. Redskins had one decent year in the last 15 and are acting like the kid that found $10 on the playground and thinks he’s rich for life.

  10. Everyone talks about the damage Calvin will be able to do now, but don’t forget about Ryan Broyles. This offense can be lethal now that we have a legit back who can catch out of the backfield.
