“Mutiny” may have been a factor in Pollard release

A string of surprising moves in Baltimore extended on Wednesday to a player who supposedly was safe.

Safety Bernard Pollard is out, and everyone is wondering why.

As one league source said in response to the news, “Three teams in how many years. Soon four.  What does that tell you?”

Another source says that Pollard has a reputation for being outspoken, for complaining, and for drawing too much attention to himself.  He wears on a team, with his talent keeping him around for a second year or third year.

More specifically, we’re now getting the clear impression that last year’s incident that, as reported by Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports, was “practically a mutiny,” has contributed to the departure of Pollard — and could result in more players being purged.

And he’s where it gets really interesting.  (Or at least less uninteresting.)  Silver specifically mentioned Pollard and Ed Reed as instigators of the mutiny.

Coincidentally, we’re now getting indications that the Ravens don’t want Reed back.

So while coach John Harbaugh handled a difficult situation very well at the time (as evidenced by the team’s Super Bowl trophy), it looks like Harbaugh may have decided that, at the appropriate time, he’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.

  1. Good, maybe no one will sign this turd and he’ll be out of football. Dirtiest player in the league the last few years.

  2. Another source says that Pollard has a reputation for being outspoken, for complaining, and for drawing too much attention to himself.

You can say this about every Ravens player.

  3. The “mutiny” was in October.

The Ravens won the SB in Feb. Is there really a story here?

  4. Besides being a head case Pollard is also one dimensional as a player. That could have had a little to do with it as well.

  5. But the Ravens dont sign these types of players and if they do they have a coaching staff in place to handle these guys!

    Oh wait, no they dont.

Who is the lockerroom leader on this team now? Its certainly not Mr. Personality Joe Flacco.

  6. Don’t let the Super Bowl trophy fool you. Yes, they got hot at the right time as a team and won the Super Bowl but there were signs of a Ravens team in total disarray. They were in total shambles, almost fist-fighting each other at one point of the season & finished the year losing 4/5 games. That 70 yard heave and catch in Denver with 30 seconds left breathed the life back into them. They had no business advancing after the Divisional Round and their true colors will speak volumes in a new calender year. 8-8, Balty.

  7. No official comment from the Ravens on this…. signings for Harewood, Canty and Berry this morning but no official announcement on Pollard. Pump the brakes Raven Nation. We heard this from Mc Kinnie last year.

  8. well ravens fans get used to solid 9 or 10 win seasons. very few play-off wins, and no superbowl wins. that’s my opinion. i always wondered why pollard went through teams so fast he seems like a great player. i guess he’s a jerk.

  9. IDK Mike, it sounds like they all grew closer because of that incident, which was described as morphing into a group therapy session. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think John H. is that vindictive…. Now his brother on the other hand…

  10. Thats why the Super Bowl was “RIGGED” for the Ravens thats the last time there ever come that close 49ers will win many Super Bowls Ravens wont

  11. People can say what they want about Jim being pissy, however it looks like while John doesn’t show his feelings he is just as passionate as his brother, and holds grudges.

    Talk about getting even.

  12. Relax people. It’s the nature of the business. We will still be competitive. 31 other teams are constantly picking up the players we realize are past their prime. Name a player that has left and gone on to be successful…Stop thinking with your emotional attachment and use some common sense….We know when to let go…… Ozzie do your thing.

  13. Revenge is a dish best served cold?

I don’t know. I read that article again, and it seemed that everything came out good from it. And, in the end, they won the Superbowl. Lifting the Lombardi does a lot to assuage hurt feelings from way back in October. I don’t know if something like that, when a team is down the way they were, would really factor into someone like John Harbaugh’s thinking? Maybe, but he seems like the less egotistical of the brothers Harbaugh. Less likely to kick some good, veteran leaders out because of a spat at a bad time in the season. Especially when it turned around so well for them, more reinforcing his control and ideas, rather than eroding it.

  14. Being Steeler Nation is an art. It’s about being superior, being better than you will ever be. Jealousy follows, of course. Jealous?

  15. I’m sure he’s got a little something waiting for the ratbirds 120million dollar QB when he plays them again.

  16. Makes perfect sense. Every fight this team gets into on the field Pollard is right there in the thick of it. No secret by now that this guy is a total P.O.S. Evidenced by his 3 cuts/ trades despite being a pretty good player, as you said.

  17. The ravens track record speaks for itself. Ozzie is the best. We r the best team in the division just be default. Pitt signed burress is a true sign of a bad team. No worried raven nation we will be on top again

The Ravenator wants an explanation as to why him team is imploding.
    ———————————

I think he is too busy celebrating his Super Bowl win last Feb.

  19. He had some monster hits (some of which were costly) but he did make the team more vulnerable in coverage.

  20. Pollard, maybe. But Reed, they DEFINITELY want back. Reed has always spoke his mind, but he’s a team player. It was no different when Ray Lewis was frustrated with the team’s direction in the last days of Brian Billick. He called him out on local radio and said we should run the ball more, and when asked by Sage Steele if he should be fired, he replied “No comment.” That’s not mutiny, that’s a player being honest. Should it be made public? No. But they’re human. And coincidentally, a living legend. So they brought Lewis back when he hit free agency. They *should* do the same thing with Reed. Ed can be mercurial, but he actually took up for Harbaugh on that fateful day of “mutiny.” Kevin Van Valkenburg did an excellent piece on him and his method of leadership. If you read it, you’ll understand the Ravens NEED Reed.

  21. Notice..there are 32 responses above mine and you don’t see one Ravens fan. Why??? Because this is who Ravens fans truly are!

The Ravens have been raped of talent the last couple of days and even their fans know that they won’t be sniffing a Super Bowl anytime in the next decade!!! Hahahahahaha.

And wait until Flacco is throwing picks all over the field this coming season. After last season’s little aberration, the Ravens are back to being the losers they normally are.

  22. The Ratbirds are done. Reed is talking to 3 teams right now. So now you have a no talent team with a way over payed wanna be QB. So good luck with that…… First to last in 1 season. So Ravenator stay sleeping at your mommy house and get ready for on other 10 years of nothing……….

    Don’t you mean, “They’ll prevail?”

Congratulations on thinking you’re part of that team.

  24. Someone, please explain why this is a big deal and why it doesn’t make sense. Did you see this defense in the regular season last year? Below average. And no, this isn’t all because of Flacco’s contract, educate yourself on NFL business please. Next man up for the Ravens and I trust Ozzie Newsome’s plan. They’ll still be competitive, without a doubt.

  25. Well- at least they re-signed their average QB to a block buster deal…… that’s something.

  26. I wonder how sad and empty your life must be to run to an Internet message board to comment on ANOTHER team’s moves in free agency. Once, fine. But literally every single move? Pathetic.

  27. I guess Reed is no longer in the driver seat. The world champs laugh at the fools who cover this team for web clicks.

  28. The past two days must seem like trying to juggle with live grenades for ravenator. Yup the model franchise with the model GM, model leader Ray Lewis, model fans….just like everybody else. SB high is over reality sucks and now you know why it’s hard to repeat as champs. You haven’t won a SB in twelve years so you forgot what happens the year after you win and most of the fanboys on here weren’t old enough to watch tv alone the first time you won. I’d feel sorry for you ….but I won’t. Cheers!

“Being Steeler Nation is an art. It’s about being superior, being better than you will ever be. Jealousy follows, of course. Jealous?”

Ok, but all you’re really good at is narcissism.

  30. Wow, will the last Raven out of the building please turn out the lights?

As a Ravens fan, I feel like I’m having the bell-ringing hangover after the blow-out party.

Time will tell whether Baltimore management are geniuses making tough decisions or idiots for dismantling a championship team. Given Ozzie Newsome & Co track record, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now…

… but if more players get cut, I may change my mind!

  31. Lot of hate for Ravens, why do you all hate success? Ravens will continue to shine & anyone who thinks that 70 yard saved Ravens season is a fool. Game went to OT, & Bmore sealed the deal. Please keep hating cause we Bmore fans like it that way.

  32. ravensallday2012: Dude, you guys lost Lewis, Pollard, Ellerbe, Birk, Boldin & Kruger and more to come. You’re now in rebuild mode as quickly as any other rebuilding team in the league. Again, Ozzie has a track record but never, ever NEVER was he ever tied down to a 120million dollar QB that will outweigh itself over the never several off-seasons. You’re simply going to find out what it’s like to be cap strapped and lose the player that made you relevant. The Steelers have been GREAT at it. Baltimore? Yet to be seen but with a tie-down to a QB like Flacco, Baltimore could SUFFER.

  33. Pollard reportedly “lost it” when Joe Flacco walked by with a double order of McD’s Chicken McNuggets and refused to share. He then told him to: ” stick to your guns and maybe you can afford to buy your own McNuggets.”

  34. Should have hired Rex instead of Harbaugh, Rex knows how to keep a team from imploding.

  35. Ravenator, you have to be a little worried. I am not happy that the Steelers are constantly pushing money into the future in rergards to the salary cap. I say cut, Troy tt. Draft Elam from Florida and start over.

  36. it has been said but Pats should sign him and put him on IR immediately for the next 2-3 years

  37. I love the Steeler fans talking trash. Your team is already awful and will still lose to the Ravens at least once, guaranteed. Pretty sure that the Ravens will replace these guys with younger players. Since they had severe problems with guys underneath covering anyway, I dont think any loss other than Ellerbe is all that damaging. They may improve.

  38. Wow, look at all the haters out today! I get it from the 30 other teams that didn’t win the Super Bowl, but steelers fans, really?! Your team has been pathetic the last two seasons and have only begun to lose key players cause your GM is restruturing deals like it won’t come back to get them later. Ozzie Newsome knows what he’s doing which is why he’s the best GM in the NFL (and why the Ravens always are and will continue to be contenders). Hate on fools!

  39. As a Ravens fan, I LOVE IT. We have one of the best coaches in the league, one of the best front offices, and we have still have PLENTY of ballers on this team. The thing I love most though: the HATE and the DOUBT that we in Bmore have become so accustomed to watching our team deal with. Nothing more fun then constantly being doubted and then watching your team rise above it to rub back in everyone’s face. Keep fueling the fire.

    ———————————————–
Yes, a long road…but not to the super bowl

  41. No explanation needed when you have the best GM in the league. Cheers!

Yup great motto : if you cant dazzle them with brilliance then baffle them with bullsh–…..I expected a smarter reply from fan boy número UNO ….I am crushed.

  42. Why all the Raven hate? Last time I checked, we still got Flacco, Rice and a whole host of good players.

So what if we don’t win the SB next year? We just won it. How did your team do?

95% of you didn’t even know Ellerbe or Kruger before the playoffs started.

Ravens will still win the division and make the playoffs. None of the guys that left to free agency are in the top 10 at their respective positions. We will be okay.

  43. Enjoy the SB replays Raven fans. This is what happens to teams that win the big one , all your plasyers put that I’m Sooooo good chip on their shoulders and move on for money. What you are stuck with higher tickets.

  44. Not a ravens fan,but only time will tell to see if they made the right moves obviously. Also remember the NFL is entertainment and any jabroni on here has no personal attachment to your team other than being a fan so quit thinking you’re part of the organization. Come out your mom’s basement and get real.

  45. I love the Steeler fans talking trash. Your team is already awful and will still lose to the Ravens at least once, guaranteed

    ——————————

Do you understand what you sound like? We’re invading only because 1.) That’s what you guys do to US on every Steelers article and 2.) because that’s what we do.

I find it quite funny that you label us an “awful” team and say we will lose to the Ravens “atleast once, guaranteed.”

Not only is that saying that we will atleast beat YOU once GUARANTEED, you still have to wonder how awful we really are when we rolled out in a stretcher and STILL beat you with Charlie Batch.

We swept you multiple times, sometimes 3 times in a row in one season. We’re also 3-0 against Baltimore in the playoffs including a trip to the Super Bowl in 2008 and Conference Championship in 2010.

Kudos to the trophy, but don’t act like Baltimore doesn’t have any more problems than what the Steelers have been facing. Balty could have easily been 8-8 a season ago. Good luck converting 4th and 29’s next season and getting out of facing a healthy Roethlisberger TWICE.

    ‘Aint happening.

  46. Hey nite2al — ask yourself, is it worth it to wreck a team that maybe could’ve won 2 or 3 Super Bowls just so you can overpay a so-so QB who lucked into one? What you’re saying is, you got your ring, and now you’re fine with the team being a skeleton of itself from now on. Well, OK then.

I can’t WAIT til Flacco has to run the show now, instead of sitting behind the scenes and letting others do the work. No more sliding by with those typical 10-for-21 140-yard passing games, not when you’re collecting the big bucks. They’ll even be booing him at the drive-through window when he picks up his chicken nuggets.

  47. All these people saying the Pats should sign him, honestly, the Jets should sign him, it’s so obvious.

    1) Malcontent/locker room cancer
    2) Patriot dream crusher
    3) Cheap to sign

    Perfect fit.

  48. @nite2al

“Why all the Raven hate? Last time I checked, we still got… ”

Now you have a slight taste of what it is like to be a Pats fan. When your team plays in five superbowls, the noise is deafening.

  49. Come back to the Chiefs. We have a new regime that actually know something about football (not like Scott Pioli when you were here before).

Well, Steelers fans do know a thing or two about going 8-8 I suppose. It seems like it makes a person very bitter, I wouldn’t know.

  51. After seeing Bryant McKinnie sitting on the bench pretty much the entire regular season, this would not be a huge surprise.

  52. Hey you, yeah you the Raven Hater.

I have one question for you to answer.

How was your Super Bowl party?

Mine was a lot of fun!

  53. There comes a time when every team has to move on from veteran players who have been there a while. Reed should have retired with Ray Lewis and went out on top. I’m very surprised that Reed hasn’t signed with The Patriots or Saints already.
New Orleans is home and he would help Rob Ryan’s Defense or be that VEteran that Bill B loves in New England.

  54. Well, Steelers fans do know a thing or two about going 8-8 I suppose. It seems like it makes a person very bitter, I wouldn’t know.

    ———————

You wouldn’t know? Seriously? How long have you even been a Ravens fan? 2012? LOL. Since the AFC NORTH formed in 2002, the Ravens has seen records of 7-9, 6-10 & 5-11. You know what else you wouldn’t know? Beating the Steelers in the playoffs. 0-3! LOL.

  55. Well, Steelers fans do know a thing or two about going 8-8 I suppose. It seems like it makes a person very bitter, I wouldn’t know.

And why was Terrell Owens not in football recently?

Pollard showed that “cancerous” or bad locker room guys can be a part of titles. Why was Owens not on teams that needed him in the past?

New England should sign him and maybe he’ll be fine there. At least he can play SS well unlike Patrick Chung.

  58. BREAKING NEWS: Ed Reed and Pollard are in Indy today and have signed with the Indianapolis Colts

Enjoy ‘cuz it damn sure isn’t ging to happen again anytime soon. Clearly they just waited until March to begin the mutiny.

  61. All things considered, including a change at OC, John Harbaugh is like the ubercoach of the NFL in winning a SB with that mess. And I say that being a Bengals fan.

  62. Probably the biggest tragedy this fanbase will ever face. Or maybe everyone who says they know how to run the team better will get the chance to prove themselves when they are general managers so they don’t sound like idiot trolls!

  63. Could it get more wierd? I mean its like the Ravens just decided 1 Superbowl was enough – time to rebuild.

In many ways it doesn’t make very much sense to pay Flacco what they did if they are going into rebuild mode. Better to embrase 0-16 than 4-12, or 6-10…for draft picks. Just the fact I suggested the World Champs worry about draft picks is nuts.

  64. Like I said – this guy is below the Patriots. Anyone that thinks the patriots should pick him up to stop him from hurting their players has to be joking. This guy would be nothing but problems.

  65. While i agree that some of the steelers fans on here are being a little obnoxious, as a steelers fan i have to point out to any of you who aren’t aware of it that EVERY s time there is a story that is even the slightest bit negative about the steelers, Ravenator posts 6 or 7 times telling us all how happy he is that the steelers are falling apart and that they are done. That is why there are a bunch of steelers fans on here saying the same things about the ravens after reading this story. I wouldnt even care about this story but i have to admit that i scrolled down through the comments thinking where are you now ravenator and how do you like it? The truth is that both organziations put a competitive team on the field almost every year. The sky isn’t falling both teams will figure out a way to remain competitive.

Fans of other teams don’t need to be jealous of the Ravens SB victory to hate them. It’s an easy thing to do. I mean the Ravens are the new Jets of the NFL so rather then hate we just laugh… but you get my point

  67. God its so funny how something that happened in October can still be spinned into Flacco’s fault because he got paid. guy never missed a start and won a super bowl. whats wrong with him getting his. anyone seen what kind of money Vick or Russel got?

  68. 2 Super Bowls + 16 years = DYNASTY!!!!
Or by the way Raven fans run their yaps you think they win it every year. 2 in 16 years you still have a looooong way to go to catch some franchises with 4 + Lombardi’s.

Also been in 3 AFCCG, and won a SB in the last 5 years.

    Where’s your team?

  71. I’ll be perfectly honest: As a Steelers fan, I’m glad Pollard won’t be playing for the Ravens next season because he’s good at his job. But I don’t like how he conducts himself and don’t think losing him will hurt the Ravens. And I’m beginning to feel the same about Ed Reed.

I’ve long admired Reed’s talent–love watching the guy play. But these games he plays every off season about whether he’ll return–games that seem designed to bilk the Ravens for more money–are leaving a bad taste. He’s on the downside of his career, and he’s not the master motivator Lewis was. At this point, I think Pollard’s actually the bigger loss on the field. If Ed’s a problem in the locker room, maybe it’s in the Ravens’ interest to sever those ties now. Either way, no matter how I feel about them as rivals, I know this organization is as solid as the Steelers. Their leadership will make the right call for their team.

  72. Ozzie understands that this tean needs to get younger. It may take a couple drafts, but yjey’ll be dominant again. Ozzie doesn’t miss on picks.

  73. pittsburg 6 in 47

    green bay 4 in 47

  74. How about the defense mutinying about Cam Cameron’s offense leading to the canning of Cameron during the season and the canning of the mutineers now?

  75. I got news for ya, steelerhater — the Ravens have been around in reality since 1946. It was just that they were called the “Browns” before you stole them from Cleveland. So I guess 2 Bowls in 47 chances isn’t bad…

  76. I love all the Steelers fans talking trash about the Ravens organization, despite the fact that their team was totally irrelevant last season. 8-8 doesn’t make you superior to a team that just won the Super Bowl. So sick of people from Pittsburgh acting like gods gift to the sports world. FYI SteelersNation, the Ravens have won as many Lombardi trophy’s over the past 15 years as your almighty Steelers.

Awful? Awful beat the Ratbirds in their own house, under the lights, with a 3rd string, “washed up” 38 yr old QB.

  78. Another source says that Pollard has a reputation for being outspoken, for complaining, and for drawing too much attention to himself. Sounds a lot like a certain murder that just retired to me.

  79. No explanation needed when you are a one and done team. This team has fallen faster than any other.

  80. I guess the Ravens are really a successful team, all the haters prove it. There was a time when a Ravens thread got 20-30 comments, now hundreds…hey Ravens fans, we have arrived! How sweet it is…SUPER BOWL CHAMPS!!

  81. All this negative news almost makes me feel sorry for you Raveneater. Never mind- it doesn’t! Having claimed the Lombardi and now talking smack of 2 time champs doesn’t matter, you are still an illegitimate franchise. And even worse, you still are in Nasty Baltimore.

  82. Funny how the Steeler fans talk over and over again about the 70 yard catch against Denver. Do they remember Franco’s catch??? Oh, but that was skill…right?

I am not comfortable losing all these bodies, but the front office was VERY upfront in the state of union news conference, they are building for the future, not just ’13.

I trust Oz, but I loved Pollard. Hard hitter yes. Dirty? No way. I will miss his “thumper” style of play.

  83. Memo to the wise. As of now, the Ravens have 12-13 picks, in what is considered (so far) to be a very deep draft. That’s a lot of picks to play with.

Ultimately, you were gonna play with fire with the chemistry. But the Ravens are going to get younger. We should still trust that Ozzie and co. know what they are doing. That is either enough picks to get Darrelle Revis without much damage, or find players that can contribute just as well.

But the Ravens got the most important thing they needed for the “New Era of the NFL,” which is a franchise QB locked up for the forseeable future.

There are painful losses. I am certainly disgusted by all the losses. But it’s the end of one era, and the beginning of a new era–with potentially a new identity/corps of players. And most of these guys, outside of Reed, were mercenaries to begin with–useful mercenaries, but mercenaries.

  84. “I’ve got a rule: I never, ever, ever hold a grudge,” Harbaugh said. “And I kind of have a rule that nobody else is allowed to hold a grudge, either. There are no grudges. We’re a bunch of guys. We don’t hold grudges. Right? We move on.” – John Harbaugh, November 2012

  85. Pollard is a headhunter. Ravens are better off without him.

  86. I wouldn’t be worried about the mutiny anyway just like John prob wasnt. If Ray Lewis isn’t involved in the mutiny then it wouldn’t have been succesful anyways.

  88. I just have to chuckle at the Ravens fans, you swept us ONCE whoop dee do. You’ve technically only beaten us what once or twice WITH Ben? Most of your wins come from Ben not playing. The Steelers are awful? Really? Steelers have been to 3 SBs in 6 years, 2 of which we won, 1 with which I had the pleasure to attending and WE are awful? One year in how long we don’t make the playoffs and we are awful??? C’mon man!
Ravens first big show in 12 yrs and now they act like they are the team to beat, listen your team was crapping the bed in the SB when the Niners went vanilla..you caught up. Congrats to the Ravens but I personally think the football gawds were tired of your team/Harbaugh whinning about never winning it because of **place blame here** and gave this one to you. Had the Steelers NOT played down to the compettion and crapped the bed 5 games against HORRIBLE teams we would have had the #1 seed so don’t get it twisted. Oh and if you look at your W-L column as well you’ll see the Ravens lost against HORRIBLE teams as well, just got hot at the right time. Perhaps Falcco was thinking about that big pay day becuase he didn’t do squat all year until the playoffs…yes its really all that matters I understand that.
Honestly when you lay down the stats or history, the only truly “awful” team was wearing black and purple….not black and gold.
Oh and Ravenator..you’re hatred for the Steelers is driven by pure insane jealousy..simple as that. Most “football” fans can at least choke out one postive thing to say about another team. I’m a die hard Steeler fan but I do enjoy ALL football and I watch all games during the season (this coming from a woman who LOVES the game)
May God be with you son….
