The Panthers are getting serious about joining free agency.
According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers are expected to retain backup quarterback Derek Anderson, keeping him from a double reunion with coach Rob Chudzinski and the Browns.
Anderson went to a Pro Bowl when Chudzinski was calling plays in Cleveland, but didn’t have a good feeling on his way out the door, saying Browns fans “don’t deserve a winner.”
Keeping him behind Cam Newton gives the Panthers a degree of security, as they try to maintain some continuity with Mike Shula replacing Chudzinski as their play-caller.
The Panthers are apparently also working the fringes of the market. According to Albert Breer of the NFL Network, cornerback Drayton Florence is on his way to Charlotte for a physical. They need depth in the secondary with the release of Chris Gamble and Captain Munnerlyn a free agent, and Florence would likely be an affordable addition.
