
In an effort to improve their salary cap situation as free agency officially got underway Tuesday afternoon, the New Orleans Saints released reserve linebacker Will Herring.
According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints will save $1.6 million against the salary cap with Herring’s release. Herring also confirmed the news via his Twitter account: “Thankful for my time with the Saints, my teammates, and their incredible fans!!”
The move was among a handful of moves by the Saints to improve their cap problems.New Orleans also restructured the contracts of linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith.
Herring signed with the Saints in 2011 after four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Herring appeared in all 16 games for the Saints last season and made one start while largely serving on special teams. He recorded 13 tackles and a forced fumble last year for New Orleans
