Derek Anderson hasn’t had much to laugh about lately.

But he has extended his NFL for another year.  Assuming he makes the team.

Per the Associated Press, Anderson signed a one-year deal on Wednesday.

“I’m excited to come back be a part of such a great locker room,” Anderson said.  “It’s a team that I feel is on the rise.  We have some work to do but we feel like we ended on a high note last season.

An unexpected star in 2007 for the Browns, Anderson has been a journeyman since then.

Anderson and Jimmy Clausen serve as the backups to Cam Newton.  At some point, they should consider adding a more mobile understudy, who would both be able to run the base offense if Newton gets hurt and to serve as the scout-team quarterback when preparing for the growing number of teams with mobile quarterbacks.
