Report: Derek Cox gets four years, $20 million with Chargers

AP

Former Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Derek Cox has agreed to terms on a new contract with the San Diego Chargers and is expected to sign it when he arrives in Southern California on Thursday.

The move by the Chargers to add a fourth year to the contract appears to be the final move to get the deal done. According to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune, added another year to the deal Wednesday night. The deal ultimately winds up being for four years and $20 million with a $5.2 million signing bonus. Cox will get $10.25 million fully guaranteed with all of the guaranteed money loaded into the first two years of the contract.

With all the guaranteed money coming in the first two years, the addition of a fourth year to the contract won’t ultimately be problematic for San Diego. If they chose to release him after three seasons, the cap hit in year four would be minimal.

Cox has 12 interceptions over the last four season with the Jaguars. He recorded four interceptions a season in 2009, 2010 and 2012. He only played six games in 2011 before landing on injured reserve.

  1. This is a definite upgrade in comparison to Cason who occasionally gets beat and the slowed veteran Jammer. Good! Now maybe pick up Pollard or Adrian Wilson to help compete over the the upgrading Donkies and KC

  2. This is the best you could come up with, Curtis?? How about giving us the latest and greatest Tim Tebow update? That should get the people goin!!

  3. This is good guy, very personable. I hope he stays healthy and plays well. Good luck Derek, we loved you in Jacksonville.

  4. Surprised because I know for a fact the the Jets are absolutely in love with Cox. NYT reported that Rex Ryan was overheard saying how badly he personally wanted Cox in his backfield.

  5. You could have at least seen what New Orleans had to offer since you scheduled a visit with them instead of leaving them hanging. It’s not like the Chargers would have pulled their offer. Enjoy playing for a 6-10 team.

  6. Agree with phinsplashy in that I would have preferred to see him signed instead of another linebacker.

    But, the draft is coming.

  7. I was wanting to get him renewed here, but not for that much money. Hopefully he can stay healthy, because he is a really great player when he is not banged up. Chargers got a good guy on and off the field.
