Packers keep Robert Francois

Restricted free agent linebacker Robert Francois wanted to stay with the Packers, and he will.

Francois has signed a one-year contract to stay in Green Bay, a league source tells PFT. The 2013 season will be Francois’s fourth with the Packers. He initially entered the league as an undrafted free agent and spent time in training camp with the Vikings (he was the guy who got waived to make room for Brett Favre’s arrival in 2009) and with the Lions before getting picked up by the Packers.

Although Francois was exclusively a special teams player in 2012, the Packers like his potential and think he could be a starting linebacker in their defense.

  1. Maybe he’s the secret weapon at RB.

Or he’ll bulk up and play Safety.

Or, he’ll REALLY bulk up and play LT.

Those are the three big needs for the Packers. He’ll provide depth and special teams help but that’s about it. He’s been with the team 3 years and hasn’t cracked the starting line up for a reason.

Solid role player but typical Packers move; invest in your players and don’t overspend on another team’s ‘trash’.

  2. And the Packers make their big splash into free agency signing a career special teams player. Ted Thompson is God and Aaron Rogers is his son.

  3. UGH, Here we go again, Packers signing/resigning Viking castoffs. When will this madness stop!?!?!?! (hopefully you get the sarcasm and realize how dumb it is when that statement is directed to the Vikings) Now back to your Leinies.

  4. For all the people who bash Ted Thompson for not signing big name free agents, I would like to point out that the Packers may lead the league in young players who seem to come out of nowhere to make a splash. Because rather than going out and spending on free agents, the Packers invest in and keep their draft picks. Not to mention all the effort that goes to scouting players rather than going for name recognition. It seems to work pretty well, I might add.

  5. gerrh – why can’t Ted make Sherman like “Panic” moves during this time period – throw away our draft picks for washed up players and spend all of our cap money on “Joe Johnsons” of the world….gerrh!
