DHB drawing interest from Jets, not Colts

The recent, periodic flurries of tweets from Colts owner Jim Irsay have made it clear that the Colts are and have been pursuing a receiver.

As Irsay said Sunday, it’s not current Giants receiver Victor Cruz.  As a source with knowledge of the situation told PFT on Sunday night, it’s also not former Raiders receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Cut on Tuesday, the seventh overall pick in the 2009 draft hasn’t generated much buzz.  However, we’re told that the Jets have interest in Heyward-Bey.

It’s unclear at this point whether Heyward-Bey has interest in the Jets.

The former Maryland speedster seemed to be on the verge of breaking out in 2011, with 975 receiving yards on 65 catches.  But his production dropped by roughly a third in 2012, so the Raiders dropped the remainder of his pre-rookie wage scale contract.

  1. His production dipping had to do with Greg Knapp (and he was hurt), but he was released because he was due $7.7 million.

  2. His WR coach from 2011 Sanjay Lal is with the Jets.

I would hate the Jets to be my last option too.

The Texans should sign him and ignore the Chad Johnson talk!!!

  3. So let me get this straight!

Everyone in the league was critical of DHB and laughed at his hands of stones in Oakland.

But NOW that he’s a Free Agent, Everyone wants him( suddently, he’s the next big thing)

  4. Makes sense for the Jets for two reasons. 1, They need another receiver that can fly, but can’t catch, and 2, They need another failed ex-Raider.

  5. That’s good, that way when the Raiders trade Palmer to the Jets, they will already have some chemistry between their new starting QB and one of their receivers… Book it..

  6. This guy had real potential coming out of college. Unfortunately the Raiders drafted him.(way too high/1st rder) and played w/o a real qb for years. Hopefully he goes somewhere that have a real starting qb. Jets have 5 qbs and none of them are starters. #sellthejets

  7. ” But his production dropped by roughly a third in 2012″ If he doesn’t want to go into total obscurity he better stay away from the Jets, if Sanchez is the QB, no one will even know he’s on the team.

  8. I’m not a Colts fan, but if I were Irsay, I would be attempting to make a play for Larry Fitzgerald. With Arians as the new coach of the cardinals, the familiarity and trust could be there to make a deal like this happen. Fitz is almost on the wrong side of 30, but still probably one of the top 3 wrs in the league. Two Firsts and low level change (5th round and lower) and the Cardinals rebuild their team, the colts go to the playoffs. (Note: I’m guessing the 2 firsts based off of the Harvin Trade with Fitz being a lot better player)

  9. my prediction is that indy’s mystery receiver will be from the eagles, given colts GM ryan grigson’s earlier time in philly. could be TE brent celek. or WR jason or riley cooper. or maybe a shocker and be WR desean jackson.

  10. The Raiders will miss him come the regular season. Not only will he be missed, I believe he will better which ever team he joins. It will be like rubbing a lemon on a paper cut. Seeing a former teammate succeed elsewhere has got to hurt… bad.

  11. Not Cruz.
Anything less than the Fitz is a disappointment by the Colts. Not that we need a lot of help at WR with Wayne and Hilton…

  12. In that photo, he reminds me of a young Timmy Brown. Too bad his play didn’t remind me of Timmy Brown.

  13. DHB is a good dude and a hard worker. Good luck to him.

He lacks polish in his ball skills, but if used properly — as Hue Jackson did in 2011 — he’s a good player. With his speed, size and explosiveness he’s mighty dangerous with the ball in his hands. Just needs to keep working on the skills that make it easier to get the ball in his hands though.

  14. “It’s not this guy’s fault he was a reach in his draft by the crazy old Raiders organization. Good 3rd receiver.”

Precisely. That’s the reason most people were down on him: he was a reach and as a result was paid a ton of money (this was the reason he was cut) and expected to be the top guy. But due to sheer speed, he’d make a solid WR3 for a lot of teams. Actually, he improved a through last season, though he did regress some this past year.

Anyway, he definitely strikes me as a guy who could produce given the right circumstances. The Jets, however, don’t strike me as a team that fits those circumstances well. For anybody.

Oh my gawd!!! The Jets suck

What a great observation. You really should be moved to assistant shipping clerk.

  16. The new GM Idzik is just doing what Mike T. (former GM) failed to do – which is bring in a surplus of offensive players in the event that the starters get hurt. This is what hurt the Jets last season. When Keller and Holmes went down, the Jets had no good backup options (minus Kerley – proved to be a great draft pick). Also, the Jets dont have a ton of cap (10-15M left) so they need to pick up cheaper options but they are doing a good job for what they have. Idzik can NOT fix the Sanchez issues until next season so he is making sure for this season the Jets come in with actual competition for all positions.

  17. As Raider fan here, 5 yrs in tje league and no 1000 yd yet. I watched balls bounce off his chest over and over since being drafted in 09′ the dude can run but cant catch. Thats a bad recipe for NFL receivers. Arena league may take a look? If not, after tje T tomb trade i can see the jets keeping their reputation for pics alive! Ge get em boys!

  18. DHB has worked very hard to develop and his hands are fantastic compared to when he entered the league.

I hope the Raiders keep him.

    Loser!

The Arena League? LOL. DHB will probably get a contract in the neighborhood of 2 years at $4 mil per year in the NFL.

No 1K season but he did have 975 yards receiving the season before last b4 Greg Knapp and co drove the offense into a ditch last year. Plus he had I would say at least 100 additional yards wiped out in 2011 on pass plays that were called back due to a teammate’s penalty.
