Report: Texans offer Reed three years at around $4 million per year

The Texans and the agents for safety Ed Reed met again in Phoenix, but reports are that they aren’t any closer to a deal.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the two sides are “not close” on agreeing to terms at this point in their conversations. According to McClain, the Texans offered Reed a contract that would pay him a little more than $4 million a year. Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun hears the same and adds that it was a three-year offer.

Both men also agree that Reed is looking for more money, in the $6-7 million range, and that appears to be more than the Ravens are willing to pay as well. If Reed is only going to sign a contract that pays him around the same amount he made last year — $7.2 million — he could be waiting a while to wind up on a team for the 2013 season.

If that’s the case, the Texans and Ravens might both move on to other safety options and leave Reed with even less appealing offers if he’s going to keep his career going.

  1. The owners have to be setting a new ceiling for each position. I wonder if the 100 million dollar contracts for WR, CB and other skill positions will be lowballed from here on out.

  2. Sounds like an offer the Pats would make. I think $6 million is realistic, $4 million is a little bit of an insult

  4. Ravenator,

I see you already changed your tune. You indicated he was too slow and old and done, and now “WOO he’ll probably stay a raven!!!!”

    Somebody ban this troll.

  5. Hey Jack the Moron! If he wanted to stay a Raven? he wouldn’t be visiting other teams! He wants to play for a competing team.. Not a average rebuilding team!

  6. hey swirv. hes looking to get paid. and that doesnt mean he wont come back to baltimore. and seriously all you people who think the ravens are rebuilding have no clue what you are talking about. ravens will be just fine. go ravens!

  7. I’m still trying to figure out how PFT lets the moron trolls like Ravenator,Logicalvoicessays, and FlavorDave say anything they want yet they block actual good posts..unless the moderators are actually these dudes in disguise??

  8. Funny how the Ravens were hopelessly out of any playoff or superbowl contention last year when Terrell Suggs tore his achilles.

Just watch how the Ravens are right back in the hunt with a MUCH BETTER defense than last year. You trolls seem to forget that our defense STUNK WITH Ray Ray, Pollard…Ellerbe and Kruger and Cary williams last year

With Suggs and Ngata back at full strength…a healthy Lardarius Webb at one corner and Jimmy Smith at the other and with the addition Of Marcus Spears and Chris Canty and maybe a Dumerville Osimora or Freeney or James Harrison and the return of a healthy Ed Reed and TWELVE picks in the draft Ozzie will field a MONSTER defense compared to last year.

Ellerbe and Kruger and Ray Lewis and Pollard were the weak links.

  9. He will take that offer he will be closer to home in new orleans closer to retirement he will play 1 year come of the bench in year 2 then retire

He stays a raven. Hate on haters.

I am so confused. Is today your like Ed Reed day or does it change at midnight. Again you change your opinion on players more often than you change your underwater or brush your teeth…. What a pathetic weasel.

lol, that’s a lot of maybe’s. I guess losing boldin, your entire starting Lb core, your second best safety and probaby ed reed means nothing. and your plan is to replace these guys with old, not as accomplished players? ravens will be back to obscurity soon enough.

  12. I would like to see Reed stay a Raven but not at that price. They let Boldin walk over two million so unless they want to overpay, I dont see Reed coming back. The Ravens need a safety. Reed doesnt tackle as well anymore but he still has instinct, leadership ability and a good set of hands. This could go either way.

  13. “Ellerbe and Kruger and Ray Lewis and Pollard were the weak links.”

The reason why players are “starters” is because they’re better than the alternatives on the roster.

So if you really think those 4 are bad, wait till you see the guys who were behind them on the depth chart.

  14. Well the fact that he put fear in qb in passing game every time on tv I hear them say make sure u know where number 20 is where’s Ed reed.

The reason he won’t get 6 mil is cuz of injury history but if people say doesn’t matter what u did in past then why would injury matter if it’s in past as well.

Well pats won’t sign him they have Adrian wilson now

Lions. Packers. Sf. Saints cowboys texans bengals all could use him

  15. sorry jaymejane…ravens have made the playoffs 6 out of 7 years and just won the superbowl….not exactly a franchise that has a recent history of obscurity

  16. Ellerbe and Kruger and Ray Lewis and Pollard were the weak links.
Are these the weak links du jour? You rat turd fans are such turn coats….one day a hero next day a goat….no wonder people laugh at the raven fans and Baltimore in general. Loyalty to murderers….not to loyal players.

  17. If I were an owner I’d have more problem with the three years than the price per year. Maybe Ed should compromise and tell teams he’ll take 5 million for two years.

  18. Considering Texas is a tax free state. I would sign the deal and not worry about trying to get more. Why let the state of Maryland or some other state take 10% to pods away.

  19. Kruger really was a weak link, the guy is terrible against the run and in his four years has only had success as a situational rusher. Pollard is awful in coverage, but a lot of strong safeties are anyway. Teams were eating up the middle of the field last year when they realized they could isolate Lewis in coverage. Williams was pretty awful and I’m glad he’s gone. Cody was the worst player on that defense and will probably not see the field for a while until he does a lot of strength conditioning. Hurt Ngata and weak Cody? Run up the middle, you get a free 5 yards before you contact the linebackers.

Wouldn’t go as far as the other guy to call them weak links (except Cody and Williams), they all made timely plays but many had weaknesses.

  20. The owners have done a real good job of training the fans on “its just a business”.

Why put names on jerseys anymore? Most of these players come to a city and actually become apart of that community. Fans do become attached to players, thats apart of being a fan. There should be cap penalty relief to encourage players to stay with one team,in one city.

  21. He should focus on garunteed $ and grab it..3 yrs
for a 37 yr old safety with neck issues? please he ain’t getting over $ 5 mil per year anywhere!

  22. Looks like corprate America to me. For the price of an aging employee they can get two fresh out of college for the same price. And the two will work hard and feel entitled to nothing.

  23. Reed will be 35 in September. $4 million per year seems a bit high. I’d bet very little is guaranteed.

  24. there is my buddy nofoolnodrool again. since he knows his beloved steelers are now chasing the ravens its back to ray is a murderer…which nofool claims was a topic he wouldnt bring up again. by the way where is your hidden evidence…oh right there is none because he didnt murder anyone…now go look for some ravenator posts and have a nice day

  25. Reed is the ballhawk we need back there in the secondary but if Rick Smith decides not to break the bank for him I’m fine with that. There are still a few other safetys on the market that can get the job done for the money Reed has been offered. If not this draft is deep with secondary players. We have 4 picks in the top 100 so we will be just fine. Bulls on parade!

Are there any fans out there hatin’ on the Ravens? No…no one cares about your Browns, I mean Ravens…Fans Hate on certain teams because they wish their own team had the same sustained success, number of excellent players and gigantic fan base. There are only a few teams in the NFL right now that truly have Haters, and yours is not one of them.

    STEELERS
    Patriots
    Cowboys
    Packers
    49’ers

Sustain in the same manner as these teams and the Ravens will have Haters in the future…but right now, most folks justdon’t care about your team one way or the other…just another team that won the Super Bowl.

    Cowboys sustain what? Losing?

  28. hypocycloid36- while I don’t disagree those teams that you mentioned have the largest (bandwagon) fan base. The Steelers and Packers are the only 2 that have done (won) anything in the last 15 years. Just to fill you in on a little history, both of those teams have just as many titles as the Ravens since 1996 when the Ravens began. So before you say that the Ravens need sustained success (same amount of rings in that time period would justify success) and great players (ravens have developed at least 3 HoF players) you should reconsider what you just tried to say, the Ravens do have haters because of their sustained SUCCESS. So hate on haters!

  29. what downward spiral? i believe they just won the superbowl. and the article says reed was given an offer. unless you know something he hasnt accepted. by the way how is the offseason of your 8 and 8 debacle going

  30. for a player on the downside of his career who can’t stay healthy, 4 mil. seems a bit much…..just saying

  31. NFL referees gave you That playoff run a lot of bad calls as NO CALLS!! Broncos and especially my NINERS got cheated 9-2 in penalties.. Yea you guy are so good that the NFL gave you a suprbowl

  32. $4 million to play his usual 8-10 games a year? WOW take that money and run Eddy! Don’t be a selfless Joe.

And the Nest burns brighter every day……abandon ship Ratbirds!

  33. If anyone thinks Ed Reed is worth more than $4 million a year, they obviously didn’t see him play last year. The guy can’t takle and his coverage ability is getting worse every year. Great guy and great leadership ability, but the Ravens should move on. They should look at moving Jimmy Smith to FS and also look at finding younger talent in the draft.

  34. I think the one thing people tend to forget was that Ellerbe was a backup entering this season. McClain was the starter opposite Ray. Also, Kruger was only used primarialy in pass rush situations with Upshaw who is still very young getting the lions share of the starts.

We will have suggs, McClain, and Upshaw back next season, so we are only replacing 1 LB. And it looks like we will sign a Harrison or the like to fill in. I’ve also heard that Dansby might be available on the cheap – more in the range they wanted for Ellerbe.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I’m losing all respect for 49ers fans. Not only do they whine all the time, but they can’t even write a complete, intelligent sentence.
