Talks between Freeney, Broncos stall

AP

Once the Colts decided not to pursue a new contract with 3-4 linebacker Dwight Freeney, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning moved quickly to recruit his former teammate in Indy.

Since then, he Broncos and Freeney have moved with somewhat less urgency.

More than 11 days after the Broncos cut defensive end Elvis Dumveril and more than two days after Dumervil picked Baltimore over Denver, efforts by the Broncos to bag Freeney have stalled.

Reporting from Denver on NFL Network’s Total Access, Michelle Beisner explained that the deal isn’t dead, but that talks are moving at a slower pace  Per Beisner, Freeney wants $6 million per year, and he’s willing to wait for it.

Given the current market for pass rushers, he could be waiting a while.  Dumervil’s base deal with the Ravens pays out $5.2 million per year.

If Freeney is Plan B, Plan C apparently isn’t John Abraham.  Per Beisner, Denver’s interest in the former Falcon have cooled considerably.

  1. Abraham must be hurt and can’t pass a physical.

He’s the better option for Atlanta over Osi if healthy, and seems a better option for Denver over Freeney when healthy.

    Whats up with JA55?

  2. $6M/yr get real Freeney that is delusional! Make the offer to Freeney the final offer if he doesn’t get a reality check just move on and find a DE in the draft!

    Executive of the year?

He’s not willing to overpay for an old guy well past his prime….??

    LOL @ haters.

  4. He’s not worth it,just draft someone and get younger in the process, with Wolfe,Knighton, jackson&Ayers we’ll be ok,won’t lead the league in sacks but with welker we should adverage 35pts a game that’s should be enough to win games.

    “Executive of the year?”

If he doesn’t sign him to even a 5mil/yr contract, then yes!

  6. Some of you guys are idiots… Every team has to fax. No choice and Dumbervil was trying to get it done in MIA at a Kinkos? And his agent was in a different state also? If you had 8.5 mil on the line would you be irresponsible on the day of the deadline? Ha Denver was ranked #2 defense last year and Elvis was not too good people. ASk the real DEN fans who watched him all year.

    Really? JA55? SMH

Shake your head all you want. He is referred to as JA55 in plenty of other places.

He’s one of the best DE over the last 10 years, and had 10 sacks last year. Sacks aren’t the end-all be-all, but he should have someone willing to sign him. He’s not as big a liability as Osi when defending the run, and even when playing 50% of the snaps last year had many big plays.

Just don’t understand why nobody, even Atlanta, won’t take a flyer on him. There has to be a reason he’s visited so many places, and nobody is biting. It’s most likely not a money issue, as he has stated publicly he knows he wont get top money anymore, and has already proven he will take less pay to stay in Atlanta (where he has two adopted children).

  9. 6 mil? He’ll be waiting until he retires. Freeney’s most previous best season was 3 years ago and he only had 10 sacks. Not worth 6 mil. We can pay someone much less to occupy an Offensive Lineman while Von gets to the QB. It would be nice to have him, but I’d be much more comfortable at 3-4 mil.

  10. Denver will win the afcw w/o signing or drafting anyone.
the big question is wether or not they get a stud RB to help Manning pull an “Elway”…and finish his career with back to back championships

  11. Freeney is a moron and he always has been one and he is lucky the Colts front office was clueless and overpaid him so much in his last contract. I don’t see any team dropping 6 mil on a one-dimensional guy past his prime in a tight salary cap era.

It is as though morons like Dwight don’t even grasp there is a salary cap and live in a fantasy world where they think they are better than they are.

If Denver somehow decides to drop 6 mil on this moron then wow, talk about crazy. You’re better off drafting a guy or finding some scrub to hopefully take a double team off Miller.

  12. “….and Manning is hit, yes it was Dumervil. manning is down and holding his shoulder. welcome back to Denver Mr. Dumervil”

Elway is a joke, always has been…..

  13. You can write your “Broncos Sign Freeney” article now and just stash it away for the day he does sign. PFT could have wrote that article the day Peyton Manning said he wanted Freeney on the team.

After Peyton Manning said he wanted Freeney all of a sudden Dumerville’s contract is out of whack and kinds of weird stuff happening with Dumervil.

  14. ravensbob

Im not even a Broncos fan and I know better than to say Elways was a joke or disrespect him. He was a tremendous athlete and leader.

    TOTAL SUPERBOWL WINS!!!

    ELWAY 2

    RAVENS 2

and Elway got his team there 5 times! more than all the ravens teams in NFL history!!!

    How bout them apples? lol

Thats the trouble with Denver isn’t it? Always signing guys who are past their prime…

    Dawkins
    Mays
    Manning
    McGahee
    Welker
    Stokely
    Porter
    Leonhard
    Brooking

    Need I name more?

    Executive of the Year?

Hell yeah! With or with out Freeney this will be
the second FA period that Elway has won outright! It’s the second year in a row that he’s brought in a top 5 player at his position. Elway kills in FA… it’s the drafting that remains to be
seen about. Draft Margus Hunt and Elvis can have all of the crabcakes and jelly donuts he wants.

  18. Freeney wants to be paid and play like a 3 down player. That’s why he left NE without a contract too. Eventually he’s gonna have to accept, at his age, a situational pass rushing role with the compensation that goes with it(unless he’d rather retire). In that role, at a reduced compensation, he’d prob be worth 8-11 sacks and get a swing at another ring. He’s not gonna get starter money, his agent should know nobody is desperate to do that. After all, Denver still has VMiller.

  19. freeney wants to get paid!!! he got 14 mill last year, and only got us 5.5 sacks and 12 tackles, dude robbed us!! hes crazy if he thinks hes getting 6 mill, and if u do sign him, teams will always run on his side, cause he spins himself out of plays

Funny how Pitt fans were saying the same thing about Harrison hitting Manning before the season last year. How did that work out for Pitt. Ravens fans always trying to be just like their big brother Pitt.

  21. “Funny how Pitt fans were saying the same thing about Harrison hitting Manning before the season last year. How did that work out for Pitt.”

James Harrison didn’t play vs Denver. He was recovering from knee surgery.

  22. Right on Freeney! Squeeze em’ for every last penny. It’s rare these days to see a player with leverage. Everyone knows Denver wants to make a run with Peyton at the helm, might as well make em’ pay for it! That’s what happens when you show your cards Elway. Good luck 3 years from now Denver.

  23. What is with these old farts demanding more money than what they’re worth. 6 million? Dude you had two down seasons, what leverage do you have to demand an amount. Now @ravensbob, this is only your second SB in ten years, if the ravens are all that then they should have more rings. Elway completely turned this broncos team around in his two years.

  24. …Per Beisner, Freeney wants $6 million per year, and he’s willing to wait for it.

This can’t be possible, are he and his agent really that out of touch with reality? Freeney probably has about as much of a chance at getting $6 million per year as I do at this point in his career. He has never been any good against the run, and he will likely never see double-digit sacks in a season again in whatever remains of his career.

  25. Freeney has officially went to fantasy land. Did he sign with Marty Magid? I say forget him and JA55 to play who they have and find another DE in the third or lower; doom was a 4th or 5th. These free agents this year are in la la land and it is going to take a couple of them getting left out entirely come camp time for a good dose of reality to set in. With what Free did last year he will be lucky to get 3 million and a breakfast burrito to play down the line from Vonny Football!
