The Jets may be changing safeties this offseason, but they may not need to change the name on the back of one of the jerseys.
Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that Dawan Landry visited with the Jets on Wednesday. The Jets got a strong season from his younger brother LaRon in 2012, but his departure for Indianapolis at the same time Yeremiah Bell left for Arizona has left the Jets awfully skinny at safety. Josh Bush and Antonio Allen are the top guys now, so the Jets’ interest in the elder Landry brother isn’t all that surprising.
Dawan Landry spent the last two seasons in Jacksonville, starting 32 games and picking up nearly 200 tackles in the Jaguars secondary. The Jags released him early in March and the Jets have reportedly had interest in Landry since early in free agency. He was in Baltimore from 2006 to 2010 and played for Jets coach Rex Ryan in the first three of those seasons.
Adding Landry would help the run defense more than the pass coverage. Given the state of the safety position at present, that would be plenty to recommend him for the job.
