Saints center Brian de la Puente, a 16-game starter in 2012, has signed his one-year contract offer from the club, the team said Tuesday.

Pro Football Focus graded the 27-year-old de la Puente second among centers in 2012. According to PFF, de la Puente surrendered just two sacks in 1,134 snaps.

The Saints tendered de la Puente at the second-round level in restricted free agency. de la Puente and teammate Chris Ivory were among 11 restricted free agents to receive the second-round tender before the start of the 2013 league year.

The Saints signed de la Puente to their practice squad in 2010. He emerged as their starting center the following season.

  1. Welcome back Brian! See, a guy like de la Puente, who came outta nowhere, the Saints can find a LT anywhere without using a first round draft pick on one. We’ll see though.

  2. Don’t sleep on the Saints. We didn’t make a big splash in free agency and we didn’t sign the biggest names either. But what we did do is add a group of good, solid football players. Guys like Keenan Lewis, Ben Watson, Jim Leonhard, Victor Butler and Kenyon Coleman. These guys are all team players and high character guys and were all had at a discounted price. The only loss we had was Jermon Bushrod and we should be able to shore that up between the draft and with the guys currently on the roster. We will be just fine this year. I’m expecting 12-4 at the least. Who dat!

  3. Great job by De La Puente last year. The guy just works hard and is a valued member on the line. The Saints did well by re-signing him.
