Broncos’ Andre Caldwell upset Peyton didn’t invite him to play

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and Giants quarterback Eli Manning got together recently with some of their receivers for workouts at Duke University, whose head football coach is David Cutcliffe, who coached both Mannings in college. From all accounts it was a good offseason session for all involved.

But at least one player is unhappy he wasn’t invited.

Broncos receiver Andre Caldwell wrote on Twitter that he was upset he didn’t get an invitation to run routes and catch passes from Peyton at Duke, and that he takes it personally.

Manning, however, said today that Caldwell shouldn’t take it personally. According to Manning, there wasn’t space at the Duke facility for everyone they would have liked to invite, and so Manning decided to invite his three top receivers: Wes Welker, Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker.

“I’m excited to see Bubba’s competitive attitude,” Manning said, calling Caldwell by his nickname. “I hope he’s able to turn that into a productive offseason and has a good season for us this year.”

Perhaps tweeting was the only way for Caldwell to get Manning’s attention: Last year Caldwell didn’t have Manning look his way very often, as he played in eight games and caught one pass.

  1. No Caldwell has every right to be upset he obviously wants to play and get on the same page with Manning but it seems like Peyton could care less. He could have at least let him know about it and then set up a date to work with Caldwell and the other receivers, leadership grade takes a slight dive on Manning in my book.

  2. If the Broncos draft a WR at any point then he’s going to be really mad. How would he make the roster if they have a new prospect to go along with those 3 vets that are locks? Now’s not the time to get mad, wait 2 weeks before you know what you’re #1 problem might be.

If Caldwell is not happy with his situation then he should talk to his agent about how this deal came about and got accepted in the first place. If this wasn’t what he’s looking for then he should hold his agent and/or himself accountable. And getting invited to a Duke workout is not the only make to make an NFL roster. If that’s what’s important here then he needs to spend less time complaining and more time in furthering whatever steps are necessary to achieve his career goals. He should press his agent to advise an action plan or remind him of what that is.

  3. Maybe he didnt want to participate, he was upset he didn’t get the opportunity to practice standing on the sideline…No need to invite someone who can’t catch to play catch.

  4. 3 starters set in stone, Payton actively campaigning for Stokely, Matt Willis also plays special teams, and one catch for the year – not looking great for Caldwell’s invitation to practice in Denver either

  5. as a Seahawks fan, I don’t have a dog in this race, but I will tell you what…. gotta like the youngsters spunk. I would much rather have a player that “wants it bad”, than a guy just enjoying the off-season.

  6. Like the “not enough space” reply by Peyton.

I mean, 3 receivers is cool and all, but try and put FOUR of them on a football field?!?! Crazy-talk, right? Right?

  7. Andre, don’t be upset with the non invite from Lord Peyton, hell, just change Teams and position, maybe cornerback, ole Peyton will throw to you then. As in an Int, to end a drive that would have taken his team deeper in the playoffs……

  8. Caldwell is a solid reciever Im a Gators fan so i kno he can play Dallas would love to have u if your released…He did have good season with the Bengals!!

  9. Caldwell is probably in the 48th-53rd guy on the roster window, if he were smart he’d be looking to work out with Brock Osweiller cause that’s who he’ll be catching passes from in training camp and preseason, that’s the guy who will help him make the team not Peyton Manning.

  10. Peyton Manning has always been a great teammate especially when he blames his offensive line for his multitude of one and done home playoff losses.

  11. That’s a dick move for sure.he has every right to be upset things like this is terrible for a qb to connect with his receivers And I find it hard to believe they couldn’t have brought one more guy to this dog and pony show

  12. I am almost equally upset.

I only had one fewer catch than Andre last year so I have almost as much right to be upset.

  13. I’d question the guys that weren’t upset. If they are going to succeed they need to have the attitude that they belong and want to participate in everything. If he has the awareness to be upset expect a better season.

  14. Some day in July…

“Andre, you need to go see Peyton. And bring your playbook.”
