Linebacker Larry Grant has had a few visits with teams since becoming a free agent last month, but the former 49ers backup and special teamer hasn’t been able to land a new job.

If a report from Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee is correct, it might be a while longer before Grant lands with another team. Barrows reports that Grant has been suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

While Grant will be able to practice and play in the preseason, the prospect of not having him available for the start of the regular season could give teams pause since they will have other options to round out their roster with players who can do what Grant does. The suspension would also throw a bucket of cold water on any hopes Grant might have about landing somewhere where he’d have at least a shot at a starting job.

Grant has played in every game for the 49ers over the last two seasons, starting three times in 2011 but playing only a handful of snaps on defense for the 2012 NFC Champions. He was originally a seventh-round pick for San Francisco in 2008, but started his career with the Rams after being signed off the 49ers practice squad during his rookie year.
