Colts raise more than $650,000 for cancer research

Inspired by coach Chuck Pagano’s in-season battle with leukemia, the Colts have become committed to raising money for cancer research.

On Friday, the effort to date topped $1.1 million, via more than $650,000 raised at the inaugural “Chuckstrong Tailgate Gala.”

The event, held at the team’s practice facility, included quarterback Andrew Luck throwing passes to anyone who contributed $1,000.  Luck threw 24 passes, presumably completing each of them.

“We’ve had a great partnership with [the IU Simon Cancer Center],” Colts co-owner Kalen Irsay told Cathy Kightlinger of the Indianapolis Star. “But [the center] also obviously holds a very special place in our heart because they saved [Pagano’s] life.  He got the best treatment there.  I don’t think we could have asked for anything more.  And his family can attest to it the same way.”

A silent auction included a trip for 10 to a 2013 Colts road game in the Irsay jet, valued at an estimated $75,000.

  1. If it wasn’t for his charitable efforts I would give Irsay every ounce of venom I had like a rabid snake from Baltimore. With that said, I am glad that he helps the less fortunate.

He’s still a petty hypocritical joke of an owner but I’m glad he’s a giver.

  2. cancer is little more than a milti mineral deficiency disease. It is cured 50 ways over already people. its the food you eat that causes the cancer. Google “A World without cancer edward G Griffin” for the truth

  3. Packer fan here but diggin what the Colts and Mr. Irsay are doing. On and off the field. Packers and Colts in New York in February…yeah, I said it. Chuck Strong and Go Pack Go.

  4. Ever noticed how all this cancer research money goes to the treatment and not the cure? I am sure billions upon billions of dollars have been dedicated to cancer research but there is no decrement in the number of deaths associated with it. I am happy the Colts raised money for the research but I question whether there is any motivation to find a cure. Afterall, there is more money in the treatment than the cure.

  5. The truth is not even half of that money will actually go to real research of cancer.

  6. That is excellent for the Colts, thank you for trying to do something great. The owner is still a tool-box, but what they are doing is awesome.

  7. As a Raider fan.. I applaud the Colts organization for using their platform to support cancer research and contributing in a huge way toward someday discovering a cure.

  8. It’s amazing how everybody on here will bash him, but yet when he does something like this everybody praises him? People he does this kind of stuff all the time. He’s always donating money to either a cause or to fans that follow him on twitter.

  9. After the event Pagano was overheard saying, “I would rather have died from cancer than have to coach ole mush mouth Angie Luck.”

    The colts suck!

  10. Indy’s number one fanboy.

im glad my team QB isnt focused on this type of stuff, hes focused on being the best young QB in the game, Luck will always be superior to IRG3, jersey sales and commercials dont make u great, its hard work and film study and making yr entire team better

Military brat from two retired SNCOs, respectful, articulate, college graduate, involved in politics, and successful….everything you’d want your son to be. Yet people in here are hoping he shreds his knee again and ends his career. Sad commentary and pathetic. The world (and black community in general) need more RG3s and less Russells/Vicks/Youngs…..
that makes no sense!!! u mean the world need more Toms, is what u really mean!!!

Hey, if I were a fan of the Displaced Baltimore Colts, and lived where you live, I would spend every waking minute following the Redskins and their QB too
u do know Indianapolis is alot cleaner and nicer than DC and alot less crime and violence, and the colts are and have been a better team than the Redskins, u guys are so annoying that every other team dislikes u guys just because of that, u should eat a slice of humble pie, it does a body and franchise good

the IRG3 expierence will fail just as the mike vick expierience failed some years ago, both was just as hyped when they first came in the league and neither will ever sniff the superbowl unless they brought a ticket
