When the National Hockey League Entry Draft begins June 30, a defenseman prospect with a connection to a former NFL star could reportedly hear his name called fairly early in the seven-round event.

Darnell Nurse, who most recently played for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the Ontario Hockey League, is the nephew of former Vikings, Redskins and Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. NHL.com currently ranks Nurse as its No. 9 North American prospect among skaters, or all players excluding goalies.

In a story published Sunday, the 18-year-old Nurse, who is the son of McNabb’s sister, told the Cherry Hill (N.J.) Courier-Post his uncle has been a valuable resource for him.

“No matter what the question is or no matter what I’m going through, he’s always been available,” Nurse said of McNabb, according to the Courier-Post. The publication says Nurse is “projected to be a high pick” in the 2013 NHL draft.

McNabb, who co-hosts a show with Mark Malone weekdays on NBC Sports Radio from 3-7 p.m. ET, told the Courier-Post he’s impressed by Nurse’s work ethic and attitude.

“Darnell is a really mature kid,” McNabb said, according to the Courier-Post. “He’s goal oriented. He’s the guy that’s willing to do whatever it takes in order to be the best.”

  1. And Popeye Jones’ son is the number 1 rated prospect in this year’s NHL draft.

  2. He’s legit. He could very well be available when the Flyers are picking, too. That’d be something.

  3. Slight correction: #9 among North American skaters is exactly what it sounds like: ninth best North American skater. That group excludes North American goalies, European goalies, and European skaters (the second largest group).

Depending on the lottery and where Euros Nichushkin, Lindholm, and Barkov fall, Nurse may be there when Philly is picking. As the #2 defenseman in the draft, my bet is that a team takes him between 5-10; perhaps even earlier.

  4. And he has been projected in many mocks to go to the Flyers when they pick. Although, I don’t think he would be booed like his uncle was.

One thing I don’t think this article was clear about though is….. Albeit, it is his “nephew”, but it is by law. It is actually his wife’s sisters’ son. No McNabb blood in him.

  5. Will he pimp Chunky Soup? Does he have 3 teams he’s eyeing? Does he feel Tony Romo is overpaid? Will he vomit down the stretch in the 3rd period? I could do this all day.

  6. Instead of wishing the guy good luck, or congratulating him for almost making it, everyone’s bashing his uncle. Typical.

  7. I’ve seen him play a couple of times now this year, skates very well for a guy his size. Any team that drafts him is going to have an awesome d-man.

  8. Nothing’s wrong with the overtime rules, you can’t have endless overtimes during the regular season. The games would jsut take too long, the shootouts are a good idea.

  9. Let’s hope he understands the overtime rules and doesn’t spew his chunky soup all over the blue line wit 2 mins left in game 7 of the finals..
