Redskins take steps to improve FedEx Field

AP

The bad news is that the Redskins won’t be replacing the playing surface at FedEx Field with FieldTurf or some other synthetic option.  The good news is that they’ll take meaningful steps to improve it.

ESPN 980 reports, via CSNWashington.com, that the field has undergone a “major renovation” that includes an improved drainage system.  Also, the middle of the field will be re-sodded after the Redskins host the Chargers on November 4.

Eighteen days later, the Redskins play two prime-time games in six games at FedEx Field.

“Once the [2013] schedule comes out, our people are ready to commit to a schedule so we have some new sod for the end of the year,” G.M. Bruce Allen previously vowed.  “We think that is going to address the playing field in December and hopefully January.”

January gave the Redskins the biggest problem in 2012, when it appeared that the grounds crew simply painted the dirt green.

  1. It would be a wise investment. Otherwise RG3 will be taking steps to the training room.
Seriously even with a new field he has gotta learn to protect himself because he is literally all they got.

  2. You won’t need the field in January, trust me. You’ve got to win the Div. to get home field. You won’t, New York will. Don’t forget to remove all of that dead grass you killed with green paint.

  3. I’m just glad they will have it all fixed up for when the Vikings come into town.
Adrian will be reminding RGknee who the MVP is.

  4. Holy crap. Ive been pleading with logicalvoice to spend his time to plead skins front office to fix that field. Rg3 still gonna get hurt though. Lol

  5. Won’t make a difference. Bobknee3 will be watching all of the games from your wooden shed on the sideline.

  6. When they sell off little containers of the old field for souvenir, I call dibs on the location where RG left pieces of his LCL. That portion should be worth like $6 one day.

  7. OK, serious question for the moment:

How can sod become fully “knitted” in only 18 days?

  8. Good, so now we can stop hearing all the whiny-babies on here…. that’ll be nice.

  9. They’re taking small, careful steps. So they don’t stub their toe on a rock. Or trip over an abandoned tire and break a leg. Or fall into a gopher hole. Or disturb the nesting quail.

  10. Try using grass seed instead of pebbles.
And get that Scottish dude to feed your lawn all a moot point, I really don’t think Cousins will scrambling much in the Redskins 16 game season

  11. The greatest compliment you can give a team is for the first four comments on an article to be written by fans of other teams.

San Fransisco fans know what I’m talking about: they spent all last Summer being told that their season was a fluke. Seemed like it worked out pretty well for them: their 2011 “fluke” carried them to within 3 points of a 2012 Lombardi.

Now I’m not saying the Redskins have anywhere near the talent of the Niners, but really, keep it coming– the DMV loves your confidence in the Redskins.

  12. come on logicalvoices,we are waiting for your comment of the best field of the universe, where the great players play!!!

  13. What were the Giants doing during the playoffs last year?

Sitting at home on their #sses doing Manning face.

BTW Joe Flacco is ten times the QB Eli is.

  14. uhhohh!! the best they can do is “resod”!!! what he really means is whe got a new shipment of green paint. Guess there happy with a playoff appearance and don’t think Rg3s worth ten games starting… as long as we keep selling those Jerseys though…

  15. Eighteen days later, the Redskins play two prime-time games in six games at FedEx Field.

Maybe the Redskins will do you a favor and have their three Super Bowl Trophies, so your players to know what they look like.

  17. If you seriously believe the field caused RG3’s injury you are insane. 50 other men played on taht field no problem. Chris Cleomons suffered an ACL tear the week after this game in a dome. So much for that nonsense about RG3’s injury being caused by the field

  18. The state of the field they made the Seahawks and Redskins play on was simply embarrassing, especially for a playoff game of that caliber.

  19. People blame the playing surface for the injuries, but really all you’re more likely to have happen is a muddy jersey. Artifical turf causes alot more ligament/tissue injuries like ACL/MCL tears

  20. Wow. The fans of the no-playoff Giants are mouthing off. I’ll bet as soon as the grass starts growing, John Mara will tell Goodell to punish the ‘Skins by sneaking in at night and digging it up.

  21. Just needs to last until xmas, then the end of the season and the end of the skins season. This team is not a viable playoff team unless RG3 can heal up.

Cousins held the fort down but they play a tougher schedule, I don’t expect him to win many games and the teams not strong enough to have just a game manager to win.

Wishing RG3 well, he is a great talent. But keep your wishes practical skins fans you bought into the hype and he jeopardized his career bc he felt obligated, let him heal no rush.

  22. No way the NFL should give that joke of a franchise 8 home games. bobby griffin should go to the CFL with Tebow.

  23. He will spend a boat load of money of overpaid players but wont spend the money to improve the field to keep them players healthy?? Quit being cheap and fix the field and you dont have to worry about sod in January.

  24. Giant fans are so attention starving. The Yankees and Jets get more Coverage. Heck I think the local soccer team gets more press. So you resort to coming to Papa Redskins posts to get attention hmm? I don’t blame you. We are superior and more popular. #EnjoywatchinguswinonPrimetime

  25. why does everybody keep saying that the turf was to blame for rg3’s injury,

It was a 320 pound defensive tackle hurling into his knee snapping it sideways not the turf.

anybody who thinks his second knee injury wasn’t related to the one he suffered a few weeks earlier is only kidding himself.

Back in the 70’s and 80’s when men were men almost every field was much worse than the one at fed ex and you didn’t see acl tears all over the place and the ones that happened weren’t blamed on the turf.

I think the Skins set a Super Bowl record for points in a quarter. How many record do the horsies have in Super Bowls? I mean besides losing 3 straight.
How did Peyton do in that playoff game against the crows? The regular season doesn’t count homey.

Super Bowl stink lasts five years. You can’t claim “what have you done lately” when we won the world championship just over 1 year ago. Otherwise, you sound like disgruntled Eagles fans. At least they have a QB.

  30. LOL we are going to take really good steps to improve the field, really good…but, uhm, we’re going to wait until EIGHT GAMES into the season.

Hahahahaha, my team is such a joke now, such a freaking joke. Hahaha, oh yeah we are going to get right on this.

Oh and FWIW, article is wrong, Chargers game is Nov 3

  31. How did that Super Bowl the Skins played in back in 1992 turn out?
    ——–
Seriously? You’re bragging about a 20 yr old title? One word – tool.

  32. It’s amazing that an organization that spends millions on players won’t spend $100 grand on a new field.

  33. Fixing that goat track one year too late.

RG3 is rehabbing a knee because Snyder and Co. failed to address a fundamental piece to the franchise.

  34. @hendawg

Even better! After having to chase RG3 around in that pigpen last year who wouldn’t welcome turf? Even if it means playing in the dome

  35. Just have the field ready for Kap vs. RG3. That is going to be one hell of a match-up, but I don’t want to lose any of my guys on that crap they play on there.

I know that some Skins fans (actually only a few) can be annoying, but the hate is insane. If I don’t know the league and just read this post I’d think the Skins were champs for the last 5 years. What’s with the hate? I love watching RG3 play and hearing the young man speak, why does everyone want to see him fail? Sad.

Reading this garbage I why I rarely post now.

  36. It’s sad when a Raiders fan can say another stadium is a dump and that’s exactly what FedEx field is the NFL should be embarassed they allowed a playoff game to be played in that toilet and use player safety when it benefits them

  37. Why are they waiting so long? If the schedule came out last week they have just under 5 months before the start of the season.

And spring time is when you’re supposed to plant/transplant sod to it’s new location. Should be more than enough time for the sod to take. Doesn’t make any sense.

If they were serious about fixing the field they would have had everything planned and ready to go by now.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Clemons didn’t play in Atlanta because Fed Ex cow pasture tore up his knee the week before.

  39. Chris Clemons did not suffer his injury in the dome a week after the Seahawks played the Redskins. He suffered the injury at FedEx Field. Sorry Trevor, your facts are simply wrong.

  40. INYOFACE….you might want to pull your head out of your arse, then you might seem like you have a slight bit of football knowledge.

  42. Yikes! I’ve seen some bad fields, but I have never seen turf literally rise up and attack a QB’s throwing hand like FedEx Field is doing in that picture.

  43. Niners fan here: RGIII is still gonna get hurt unless he learns how to get down or out of bounds. The field WAS trash but that’s not the main reason he got hurt. Hopefully he can stay healthy.

I always enjoy your posts and your honest insight as a true fan of the game. From one true fan to another, keep posting. I agree the haters ARE out of control.

  48. Judging from that picture, I don’t think RG3 has the whole “Tebowing” thing down yet. He needs to work on his form.
But seriously, I’m not a Redskins fan, but RG3 seems to be a class act, and I wish him well.

  49. Serious for a second. In a division where the top 3 teams are usually separated by no more than 2 games, take it from a Giants’ fan who knows a thing or two about playing the first place schedule. Those 2 games against the other division winners make all the difference.

This year, we’ve got Seattle (at home) and Carolina. You got SF and Atlanta.

RG or no RG, sod or no sod, you’ve already got an uphill battle to win the division again.

  50. The Giants won’t allow the Skins to embarrass the division in the playoffs like they did last year. Eli is clearly the divisions toughest QB that has proven he can win the big game. Skins had their shot last year and came up lame.

Skins beat the Broncos in 1988 not 1992.

  54. I also can’t wait to see the 49ers vs Redskins. Hopefully Kaep and RGIII are both healthy. Gonna be one hell of a game.

  55. @theclaim – Thanks bro, I appreciate it. I’ve been trying to do that, but it ain’t easy.

Its all good for divisional fans to come in here and hate on the Skins (that’s expected), but damn there are way more than just divisional fans hating. It gets annoying to comb through that crap for useful posts. If you are going to hate, at least be funny and creative.

  56. I don’t understand the insistence on trying to make natural grass work.

The new artificial surfaces are as soft and pliant as natural turf and just as safe. They also cost much less to maintain over time.

They do cost a little more upfront to install, which I guess is what Snyder is balking at.

  57. I’m just glad they will have it all fixed up for when the Vikings come into town.

We get updates about their field weekly.
We talk about their owner, their coach, and even their name.
Fact is; the Redskins get more pub than the 49ers and Ravens combined!
The Redskins must be the ‘New” America’s team based on the interest from fans who absolutely HATE THEM-which of course is a sign of respect.
And now we have a PFT Legend in logicalvoice.

  63. @raiders85,

  64. All the hate stems from the fact the Redskins are now the premier team in the league and Rg3 is the face of it. You do realize every time you turn on a prime time game next year you will either see Rg3 throwing a 60 yd td or Alfred Morris bowling over someone at the goal line. Frustrating if you’re not a Skins fan but an exciting year ahead for those of us that are.

Beating the ‘skins on their (crappy) turf was awesome but I wouldn’t wish a torn ACL on anybody…okay, maybe a few players.

  69. I seem to remember the league making both the Pats and the Steelers resod their fields a few years ago when they were in rough shape.

Hopefully if the Redskins let their field get as bad as it did last year the league will do what it should have last January and made them resod it before the playoffs.

First off, I didn’t say safer, I said just as safe. And it is.

And you probably should have tried that argument with someone who doesn’t have ties to the region. Caleb Rowe was injured on the road. CJ Brown was injured in practice. Perry Hills got injured on an illegal block and had nothing to do with the turf. Only Devin Burn’s injury could even be remotely blamed on the turf.

Valid Point officialgame. We’re obnoxious as fans due to years of being down. We are just releasing the frustration of 20 years of futilty. 92. It’s gonna fun watching Eli eat fresh sod. Great work by the skins who will be testing out real grass for the NFL in northern climates. Sad organizations looking to save money and don’t care about injury (see Midgets, Jets, Pets etc) will be proven wrong. Thanks Dan.

  93. Skins are so irrelevant that there are 134 postings and this would make 135. Skins are the talk of the NFL at the moment, and the prime time games says the league notices it too. Haters can hate on, but winning shuts everyone up. 2012 NFC E Champs, HTTR!

  94. @Lakersmetskins, get over yourself. As a football fan who has neutral feelings about the Skins and RG 3, I just have to say you’re deluded. There are plenty of articles about other teams and players, notably the Jests and Tebow/Revis/Sanchez. The Skins are somewhere in the middle in terms of number of articles and stories.

  95. GUESS WHAT…..STILL THE NFC CHAMPIONS!

As for those New York teams, You can comment on another team’s stadium or field until you have your own.

Seriously two teams in one stadium, that seems so indoor league like.

NFC EAST CHAMPIONS with a rookie QB. Gonna be the high life for quite awhile.

  96. The funny thing is most Skin fans are loyal and supportive. They have been down so long I guess some of the immature ones have to learn how winners act. They did endure years of suffering under Snyder and Cerrato one of the great NFL comedy acts of all time.

  97. @Lakersmetskins, get over yourself. As a football fan who has neutral feelings about the Skins and RG 3, I just have to say you’re deluded. There are plenty of articles about other teams and players, notably the Jests and Tebow/Revis/Sanchez. The Skins are somewhere in the middle in terms of number of articles and stories.

granadafan, with all due respect Sir, yes there are plenty of articles about other teams with different players, I’m just sayin’

    # of sold Jerseys
    # of prime time games
our field is sh_tty, but so is Pittsburg’s and Cleveland’s in december. it’s always been that way. Why is this such an issue? Din’t 53 other skins players play 11 games on this field too?! Nobody pays attention that Peirre Garcon (NO), Carricker and Orakpo (St.l) was hurt at away stadiums. But RG3 gets hurt and it’s the owner’s fault.

And the amount of hate for a team is surpassed by who?
Does almost every article about every team almost get 100 comments on PFT- with most (3/4) of the comments are negative?

People must care about the skins.

I care about us improving, working toward a Super Bowl, and being relevent in the NFL.

    Just Sayin’

    ———————————————————
Then you have kind, but ignorant folks who chime-in on the skins and don’t know our history!?

    People must care…

  99. The 49ers are my team but I would like to see the Skins keep RGIII healthy and see what he can do in the playoffs. The Redskins should’ve beaten the Seahawks but that’s how it goes sometimes.

The road to the Superbowl goes thru Washington DC. Nobody will surpasse Mount. Griffin. #RespecttheRedskins

Surprisingly, logicalvoicesays is right on this one…the road to the SuperBowl does indeed go through DC. But only if you live on the east coast south of there, and head north up I-95

Agreed, I have caught myself getting wrapped up in answering( feeding the trolls)some of the nonsensical posts but most make me laugh! Seem to be an EXCESS of Seahawks haters here. They should HOPE we don’t fix the field, not sure anything else was gonna slow RGIII that day. Seems a little misplaced since it was Atlanta that tipped them.

  102. Now all they need is a new mascot a new acl for rgIII,new team doctor a new head coach a new owner and a defense that can hold a lead, but even if all that happens they’ll still get flushed out of the playoffs by the all powerfull Seahawks as they have in their last three playoff appearances KAW #Go Hawks

  103. Lakermetskins,
You can’t let Peytonsneck18 bother you, he is sort of the less funny version of Logicalvoice. In all honesty, he probably knows nothing about football, but he just hops on here with his lame “IRG3” comments to rile Skins’ fans up. Eventually his mom will come into his room and tell his 40 years old butt to go to bed… no worries.

  104. Peytonsneck ruined this site, then logicalvoice came around. They’re both idiots and should be ignored. There’s real skins fans, like me, on here, who don’t troll for a second. I want legitimate NFL debate. And on every redskins article there’s 45 guys all trying to verbally beat the skins down. It’s just annoying because their points are completely asinine. Whatevs. I’m confident in RGIII and the Redskins.

  105. If u think it cost 100 grand for a new field u must smoking that good dc stuff they smoke there

Cost least a mil up to 4 mill

He can’t upgrade the field till owner gets money back from Albert haynesworth. Remember that 42 mill he stole

  106. Didn’t AP have his injury there? Or was that the twisted ankle, which led to the ACL?

  107. Fist of the raven says:
    Where are you logicalvoice?

    Answer:
Guessing by his lack of intelligence ill guess, his mothers basement.
What a complete tool. Get a life. Better yet get a job and stop being a burden on society. #logicalvoicesaysistheworstposterinthehistotyoftheinternet!!!

  108. So let me get this straight. If a Giants (or Seahawks, or Vikings, or whatever) fan comments on a Redskins story and bashes the players, we are “hating”.

But if a Redskins fan (like say, oh, I don’t know…”logicalvoicesays”) makes numerous inane posts on a Giants story (or Eagles, or Cowboys) then he is merely pointing out the facts and being a faithful fan. Is that right?

Ok, glad I got that straight.

  109. The NY Giants talking about the Redskins stadium, is like a kid talking about a grown man’s condo when he’s sleeping two to a bed.

Hey Giants, who has the top bunk??

    HAIL

  110. As long as the midget Snyder owns the team they are doomed. His goal is only to put money in his pocket, if that means a garbage field than so be it.

  111. inyofaceagain says: Apr 23, 2013 6:08 PM

“I’m just glad they will have it all fixed up for when the Vikings come into town.
Adrian will be reminding RGknee who the MVP is.”

–Too funny, a Vikings fan trash talking the Skins… Why?
Vikings have only one relevant position in the NFL and that is holding onto the number 1 fantasy football draft pick. Anything else Viking related is worthless and un-news worthy now that Percy is gone. What a joke of a franchise.

    justintuckrule says: Apr 23, 2013 7:00 PM

“Serious for a second.

RG or no RG, sod or no sod, you’ve already got an uphill battle to win the division again.”

–This is the only logical thing any of you Giants fans have said. It is the Skins division to lose, plenty of tough match-ups coming this year. But don’t let this response fool you, all the other justintuckrule posts have been normal Giant haterade vomit. Big Blue better worry about stepping up that running game rather than running their mouths, little fumble fingers Wilson won’t get it done for 16 games.

  112. This article left off the most important part of what Chris Russle reported. The Skins are completely replacing their field this summer 2.5 months before the first preseason game. This isn’t just sodding, it is a complete field replacement all the way down to and including the drainage tubes.

Then they plan on re-sodding the portion of the field between the hashes from end zone to end zone 18 days prior to the start of their final 4 regular season games.

They aren’t re-sodding the entire field because the area outside of the hashes doesn’t get as much wear and it will help hold the new sod in place.

  113. What happended to Redskin fan they used to have Class and Smarts? HOORAY you made the playoffs last year. The Detroit Lions made the playoffs the year before that and nobody cares. Your team hasn’t won a SUPERBOWL in over 20 years. You bash the GIANTS yet they have won 4 Superbowls to the Redskins 3 (And lets not forget that 2 of them happended during strike shortened seasons) and the GIANTS are the only team to represent the NFC East in the SuperBowl in years. Redskin fan step back and quit being like those classless non winning Eagle fans.

  114. I enjoy the negative comments, positive comments, all that says is that they are RELEVANT. And it’s all I could ask for! HTTRelevance again! LOL

  115. Amen skinsfan91! I don’t believe the haters even read the posts? All they want to do is display negatives. Which isn’t the worst part…when they practically wish injury on 22 or 23 year polls players is really sickening. There’s no denying that RGIII is an NFL phenomenon and the Washington Redskins will be a NFC superpower for years to come. The NFL knows this, that’s why they have more prime time games than any other team in the league. It’s time all the haters realize the facts and understand this. And 95% of these nay sayers never even mention their team or their accomplishments. Everyone fails to realize that we have 5NFLchampionships…37′,42′,XVII,XXII, and XXVI. And I’ve strong hopes that RGIII and a Alfred Morris will bring us back to the glory days with 2 or 3 more super bowls. God willing, we aren’t plagued with injury or disaster that I see these pricks desperately wishing for.
Remembering the late but great SEAN TAYLOR.
    HTTR.

  116. Remembering the late but great SEAN TAYLOR.
    —-
Of course I remember. Did you know that he was the last Redskin to appear in a Super Bowl? Albeit, his number was a sticker on the Giants’ helmet in 07′ but that’s just being nitpicky.

  117. I don’t see it as being nit picky. That’s a fact. Such as I’ve this question of fact for you…where is the big blue now? I do believe they’re right near the bottom with the eagles. We are NFC E. CHAMPIONS and we’ll continue forward building on that as y’all will continue the downward spiral that will surely not get better anytime soon.
