There was a report Thursday that the Patriots have fielded “multiple” calls about quarterback Ryan Mallett.

Those calls haven’t developed into trade discussions at this point, per a report from Tom Curran of CSN New England. Curran reports that things are quiet on the Mallett front with the start of the draft moving ever closer.

A lack of activity now certainly doesn’t mean there won’t be some down the road. If a couple of quarterbacks come off the board on Thursday night, teams looking for a quarterback may be forced to change their plans and make more of an effort in other directions.

The Browns have been the team most often linked to a deal for Mallett, although Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports they have not (and will not) called about Mallett and they’ve also been linked to Geno Smith as the noise level continues to rise ahead of the first round. Even if the Browns are out, everyone will have a better idea of where they stand come the end of the evening’s festivities.

That could wind up heating up trade talk around the league so this may not be the last we hear about a Mallett deal before Saturday.
