British discus thrower lands with 49ers

The rich keep getting richer.

Lawrence Okoye, a British Olympian with no football experience but impressive physical skills, went undrafted this weekend.  He has chosen the NFC champion 49ers as his first football destination.

Okoye made the announcement on his Twitter page, via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

The 21-year-old Okoye holds the British record for throwing a discus.  A former Rugby player as well, Okoye never has played football.

The 49ers will now teach him to football.

With so many great players already in place, the Niners can afford to roll the dice with a periodic project.  At six feet, six inches and capable of running a sub-4.8-second 40, Okoye will become a defensive end in San Fran.

  1. “He ran forty times of 4.78 and 4.88 with a 10-foot-5 broad jump and 35-inch vertical, which is crazy for a 304-pound lineman.”

Gahdamn, how can we keep this guy on this loaded roster? PLEASE DON’T PUT HIM ON THE PRACTICE SQUAD UNLESS YOU WANT A SMART TEAM TO TAKE HIM.

  2. The 49ers coaching staff can waste time teaching a guy football, rather than teaching football players how to play better football?

I think they are trying to get a little too cute with their success.

  3. Rugby players have great tackling technique. Now they’ll juat have to teach him how to play the game and put pads on

  4. new bengal margus hunt from estonia discus thrower AND shot putt champion > british discus thrower

  5. if I have to hear one more thing about the rich getting richer….

Seriously, when is the last time that a Superbowl loser had success the following year?

  6. wow……i guess anyone who wants to try to play n the nfl can if they are big enough. After this the nfl is a joke. Harbaugh is wasting picks now

I hoped that Seattle would pick him up as undrafted FA. Of course Harbaugh snagged him just like that.

    Don’t worry
You guys got Alabama NT Jesse Williams
I’d rather have him than the shot putter

I’d say that’s the most retarded comment ever , but that’s a disrespect to the challenged.

Cute with their success…I see how about you put on some pads and see how cute they are.

  9. Makes more sense for a bad team to take a chance on him. Good teams need all the depth they can get so they can stay good. He’s taking the roster spot from what could end up being a starter for them.

Why don’t you tell us what your definition of success is? Is it when you get through the night without wetting the bed?

  11. What a great pickup! Now they only have to teach him literally everything about the game of football.

  12. Offensive tackles in the NFL have become elite athletes in their own right. They also have years and years of experience between Division 1 NCAA and their NFL experience. Now a guy who has some athletic gifts but ZERO experience is going to come in and compete? Even the 32nd rated starting left tackle in the NFL would eat this guys lunch. He would be a huge liability in a NFL game where one small mistake can yield 7 points.

  13. As a seahawks fan I like this. Parity makes the game so much more interesting. So much more satisfying to watch kaepernick flounder and flail in futility at the Clink than it was to watch the likes or Cody Picket

  14. As someone living in the UK who has had to listen to this guy go on about how he will tear the league up, I hope the 9ers get a player who’s attitude is as good as his physical talent.

  15. A number of my fellow Americans rip this guy, but I admire and respect the guy for throwing his hat in the ring — something not many posters in here would do.

I am not a ‘Niner fan, but I truly wish Lawrence Okoye well. Every sentiment I’ve ever seen him utter exudes nothing but class. As Americans, we should embrace a classy athlete who wants to compete at the highest level in “our” game.

Here’s hoping that Okoye really thrives in the NFL. Besides that, the Brits are our brothers – nearly all of them fight and compete with honor.

  16. Aldon Smith better stop quiting on plays and getting to the qb. . His potential replacement has arrived as long as he gets tooled up by mid season

  17. He is 6 ft 6 308 lbs runs 4.7 forty rugby background at 18 started disc throwing two years later Olympics thrower we signed him as a udfa calm down people not like we drafted him if he can’t pick up football we move on he is a fast learning see what happens 49ers actually develop players 49ers chasing 6 49ers all the way!!!

  18. If only the Niners had a guy with experience teaching european players how to play football…

Oh right! They do, Current 49ers Defensive Line Coach used to the be Head Coach for the NFLE Reign Fire.

  19. Niners’ own Margus Hunt experiment begins. Coming from rugby background means he’s not totally unfamiliar with tackling the ball carrier. And he’s 5 yr. younger than Hunt.

  20. Hope he he makes it i really do believe me being a Brit i would love it to have another non kicker make NFL along with the Ex Soccer, Basketball and Boxer chap the Raiders drafted from the Seminoles but for somebody to start from scratch at this of all the sports no chance. But love the fact somebody is wiling to give the man a chance.

  21. “Hope he works out better than Brock Lesnar did with the Vikings.”
Or Tony Mandarich, another man mountain with the Packers who supposedly was to actually know the game of football already.

  22. “So all they have to do now is to teach him to play football”
    Really?

That sounds like those who said last year “All the Jets have to do now is to teach Tim Tebow the fundamentals of throwing the football and he will be a great QB”.

There is a nice expression to describe that kind of thinking, it is call “wishful thinking”.

At best he will become another Workout Warrior like Dontarie Poe.

  23. 4th graders can play football. You don’t have to play to understand it. Besides, everyones being too critical- he probably won’t see diddly for game time, and if he does- well its gonna be awesome or hilarious!

    You said:
His sole purpose and mission in life is to end that annoying midget QB’s career they have up in Baja Canada AKA the armpit of the west coast.

I don’t think you will ever see this but that comment made me laugh so hard I nearly choked!!
    Ur a funny dude!! haa..

I wish Okaye the best, he has everything he needs to be a great success in this league!! Harbaugh may have caught that infamous “Lightning in a bottle” with this pick”!!
