Lions risk their mojo, sign Matt Millen’s cousin

The Lions have been busy scrubbing Matt Millen’s thumbprints off their organization, but now they’ve brought in some of his own blood.

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the team has signed Millen’s cousin, undrafted Richmond quarterback John Laub.

Laub’s bio at Richmond identified him as the former GM’s relative, which should automatically make him a long shot to make the roster, lest they tempt fate (31-84 during the Millen Era, or Millen Error, as it were).

Of course, the numbers alone do make Laub an underdog, as the Lions bring back all three quarterbacks from last season (Matthew Stafford, Shaun Hill and Kellen Moore) and are also bringing Western Michigan quarterback Alex Carder to camp.

  1. The kid is related to someone you do not care for so you label him a loser and an automatic long shot. How would you like being held to the same standard. Florio, it is time to look for new talent and get rid of some of the dead weight around the office. Who knows, maybe they have relatives you don,t respect.

  2. Matt Millen is 55 years old. How is it possible that this kid is his “cousin?”

  3. RickSpielman: Without googeling I believe they were 9-7 the season before Millen so no they were not bad just very mediocre.

  4. @Rick Spielman is a Magician:
Actually, the Lions made the playoffs semi-regularly before the arrival of Matt Millen. Millen came in to take the Lions to the next level and make them a Super Bowl team! Ha!

And btw – Millen has even tried to blame his failure as a GM on the Detroit fans. No kidding.

I’m hoping the role they have planned for the new Millen is tackling dummy for the defensive line.

  5. Please get this guy out of here. Matt Millen was a cancer on this organization (literally the worst GM of any of the four major sports in the last 50 years), and I’m sure the Lions fan base (myself included) want nothing remotely related to him being involved in the lions organization. Nothing against the kid, but they really should release him; there are 31 other NFL teams that could give him a shot.

  6. cliverush- Where does anyone call him a loser or a long shot? Are the voices in your head talking to you again?

Listen, this kid comes from my hometown, so absolutely I wish him the best. But he had a very underwhelming college career.

He’s not a loser, but he is certainly a long shot.

  7. Since we now have 5 QBs on the roster, I guess this means we can now say “never” on Tim Tebow.

  8. great signing…they can let the d-line loose on him in camp, then enjoy every second of cutting him!

  9. The picture included with the story…well, it sure looks like it tells the story.
