On Wednesday there was word that the Lions had signed undrafted rookie quarterback John Laub, whose family tree includes the unlamented former Lions General Manager Matt Millen.
As it turns out, Laub hasn’t earned a contract just yet. He’ll be a tryout player at the team’s rookie minicamp next week, but has not signed a contract and may not wind up signing one with his cousin’s former employers.
The group of players with contracts does include one guy with a family connection to the Lions organization, however. Justin Rogers of MLive.com reports that former Central Michigan wide receiver Cody Wilson is the son of Lions team chaplain Dave Wilson. Detroit also signed former UCLA tight end Joseph Fauria (pictured), who is the nephew of longtime NFL tight end Christian Fauria. The elder Fauria spent 13 years in the league, but none of them were with the Lions.
The rest of the team’s crop of undrafted rookies includes: Ohio center Skyler Allen; East Carolina defensive tackle Michael Brooks; Western Michigan quarterback Alex Carder; Oklahoma State linebacker Alex Elkins; Ball State tackle Austin Holtz; Appalachian State running back Steven Miller; Albany linebacker Jon Morgan; Kentucky cornerback Martavius Neloms and Texas Tech tackle LaAdrian Waddle.
