McCoy challenges “old man” Vick to race, and gets smoked

Getty Images

Eagles safety Colt Anderson has posted the basic details on Twitter:  quarterback Mike Vick and running back LeSean McCoy raced in practice on Thursday, and Vick won.

But there’s more to the story, which we’ve obtained from a league source with knowledge of the situation.

McCoy had been riding Vick for weeks, calling him “old man” and challenging Vick to a footrace.  Vick had been laughing it off, until today.

Today, Vick had enough.  So he asked coach Chip Kelly if he could accept McCoy’s invitation.  Kelly agreed.

So they lined up and took off, and Vick didn’t just beat McCoy.  Vick smoked McCoy by roughly five yards over a 40-yard distance, and their teammates went nuts.

It has no direct relevance to the fate of the 2013 Eagles, but it proves that the “old man” can still move, which is bad news for any defense facing him this year.

  1. That should say alot…Speed is speed and that cant be taught. I think Vick will have a decent year this year. And not just because of this post today either.

  2. Finally a story where I applaud Vick! Only because I hate McCoy that much more.

  3. Speed doesn’t give the ability to read a blitz & hotroute/set protection at the line.

Speed doesn’t make you a productive QB.

  4. It’s just too bad that he can’t run and protect the ball at the same time. Something like walking and chewing at the same time.

  5. we need this video and we need it NOW!

also, distance?? 100 yards, 5 isnt a huge deal but in a 40, that’s insane.

  6. Luckily for all those teams facing him he can’t hold onto a football too well while “moving”, and when he throws it…the other team often catches it.

  7. Should have made them both carry a football. Vick would have had to keep stopping to pick his up.

  8. This is a great story. Thanks for posting it. It’s nice to read something simple and fun sometimes that let’s you know the goings on about your team and its players.

  9. “which is bad news for any defense facing him this year” why is he some how getting faster as he ages???? He was the same speed last year and he sucked

  10. Seriously, I would just love to read more fun stuff like this on your website. Please.

  11. i dont think it bodes well when the qb is faster than the rb in most cases…..

  13. The article fails to mention Vick fumbled twice and threw 3 picks in the race.

  14. McCoy ran a 4.5 at the combine i believe. After a few years in the NFL hes probably running a 4.55 now and Vick is running like a 4.5 maybe.

These guys are no where near the top of the league in 40 times, sorry.

But how did Tim Tebow do in the race?

There would have been only one set of footprints if Tebow was involved.

Maybe they make a metal and put that in the empty trophy case?

Another NY loser trolling Eagles Post. How did your team do last year?
Add anything to that case? No, just 2 of our Dream Team members.

Good Luck puking through this season degenerate.

  17. @njgiant1982

if you’re going to be a troll, at least spell medal correctly.

  18. McCoy only ran a 4.5 at his pro-day in 2009. I could see this as news if he had run sub 4.4, but what’s the big deal? He’s not that fast, relatively speaking.

  19. Vick is a great athlete…. still. New coach, better protection up front, who knows? And I’m not an Eagles fan.

  20. Too bad none of the dogs he tortured and killed could out run him. That’s right. he will never outrun his history.

  21. Did Vick use deer antler spray. Or just used his dog tag for good luck.

  22. Honestly, I find this surprising because Mccoy is pretty fast. Maybe that read option is going to be deadlier than I thought. Or maybe Vick gets injured before week 1……

  23. i’m not surprised, shady’s MO is killing defenses with his jukes and cuts. his dead-sprinting ability has always been pretty average by starting nfl RB standards

  24. What the article didn’t say is that the race was held at the local greyhound park and Vick’s camp secretly replaced the bunny with a small, under-performing pit bull.

  25. nyyjetsknicks says:

Vick should have ended the race and said “you better check yourself before you wreck yourself”.

I think you’re confusing football with metallurgy. Do you really not know the difference between a medal and a metal?

  27. Thats good news for Philly b/c great athletes at QB like Joe Flacco win championships

  28. If you played behind that offensive line last season you would be pretty fast too.

HTTR!!! Bless the Redskins and No Other Team

  29. Great story. Sounds like fun.

Reminds me 5th grade when debates were settled with a footrace. Stop talkin smack & run.

  30. So…..where was all this productive running last year because it surely wasn’t on the field during any games……you know, the time and place that matter most…

  31. Oh yeah! Defenses are going to be scared to death to face the Eagles this year with Mike Vick. Yes sir… Whoops… I just fumbled my coffee.

  32. If Vick beat him by 5 yards in a 40 yard dash and we assume Vick ran a 4.4 (doubt he did because thats was RG3 ran) then McCoy ran a 4.95. McCoy sucks!

  33. It’s crazy he still getting older and injury filled holding that high speed. And to win by approxiamate 5 yards in a 40 yard sprint is a lot when the loser ran a high 4.4 40 yard time

  34. not surprising at all. mccoy ran a 4.5 40 at his pro day. he has more quickness than straight line speed. even if vick has lost a step, he’s still significantly faster.

  35. For me there never was a question about his speed. It’s been his offensive line, if they block for him good things can happen!

  36. I love it. Young buck picking on the “old guy” and the old guy kicks his butt. Great stuff. Congrats Mike! Geaux Saints!

  37. Vick must have switched his drug of choice from marijuana to meth. Now if his hands would start sweating glue so he could hold on to the ball the Eagles may be in good shape.

Dude isnt it a little early for drinking Haterade?

  39. Vick is still fast, cool. Can he read coverages? Does he flinch at the thought of getting hit?

Hint:No and Yes are the answers

  40. The 90’s Bucs wrote the book on how to make Vic look like a whipped puppy. Good times.

  41. Mike,

I wonder if you could explain why he had to ask permission to run from the coach?

  42. Vick: hey coach

    Kelly:yea mike

Vick: I’m kind of nervous, not sure I can win, any advice?

Kelly:uuuummmmm, got it, just pretend like an angry mob of PETA members are chasing you!

    Vick: you da man coach!

  43. Take THAT, you young whippersnapper!

    or

Oh, grasshopper, you presume too much. Such are the mistakes of unwise youth.

Bottom line, McCoy is proven to be the old, slow man.

  44. There’s a defense that prevents Vick from going crazy on the field. Its called cover 2, and Vick doesn’t have much success against it. At least that’s how I remember all his games against the Bears and Bucs.

  45. Love the Giant haters. Both of these have dusted you’re team the last 4 years. 2-8

  46. He can move but he can’t move fast enough to get out of the way all the time. Thus he will make a move that will cost him future moves for the rest of the season.

RGIII take notice. Vick is fast and can throw but he will always be a liability due to the injury factor.

  47. What they aren’t telling you is he now has a pulled muscle.

Seriously, hit him once and he is going to blow an o-ring this year.

  48. GO MICHAEL VICK! I swear people are just serious haters. A QB out runs his star running back in the 40! That’s amazing within itself now add the fact that Vick is 32 is truly amazing and phenomenal!! He’s obviously in top shape and poses a serious threat as a QB in Chip’s exciting offense! People forget that Vick is the only QB in NFL history to rush over a 1,000 yards!!! I can’t wait to see our Eagles back in playoffs again! Watch and see!!!

  49. Yeah, he’s still fast, but what made him special was his ability to turn and cut on a dime. Can he still do that? And he’s fragile at this point too. Can’t take a hit.

  50. There are some thing you lose faster then others and depending on your occupation and or your extra curricular activities you can still have your speed at that age, as I recall a similar situation while in the military I had a 20 year old ragging me about being faster we played football and baseball together finally one day before our baseball game I took the challenge me being 33 and being a former track person as well…needless to say I beat him also…so note to all the youngsters becareful of who you call old man…even today being a little older I can say I see a lot of young fellows who are in worse shape than I am…

    Well played, sir.

  52. I guess that will teach McCoy not to run his mouth without a guarantee that he won’t look foolish. Its pretty bad when you get beat, but when you get beat by an “old man”, its much worse. I hope his teammates and the media rip on him about this throughout the year. RB’s are supposed to be faster than QB’s!

  53. Giants fans cracking on Eagles, anything to divert attention from your child abusing linebacker. Oh right, you cut him as soon as you found out.

    From a Seinfeld episode….NO PLAYOFFS FOR YOU…NEXT

That Chip Kelly offense isn’t going to help Vick with turnovers, there actually might be more turnovers.

  55. No one ever said that Vick couldn’t run.

Vick’s problem is throwing accurately and turning the ball over tons by making poor decisions.

So, play Vick at half back and start Foles at Quarter Back.

    Problem solved.

  56. This has to be a PR story trying to get the iggle fans excited about Mikey Vicki. If McCoy challenges the race and loses, he either is trying to hype up Vick , or he is just not that fast anymore. Man I can’t wait for the redskins to punish on Monday night!
    Hail

  57. Vick all big headed from the win called up RG III and challenged him to a race. RG III accepted and said when I am healed we will race. Vick said no we will race tomorrow or I will tell everyone I won and have my teammates leak who won.

  58. Safety Colt McCoy tweeted about the race and it had nothing to do with the team. Vick looked a little slow to me last year so he must have been injured. McCoy is a lightning quick cut back type of runner. Fast but not a burner.

  59. Funny how Eagle fans complained about all the injuries on the O-Line but blame Vick the most for the season. Even funnier is they don’t even mention THAT horrible defense, that “DREAM TEAM”

  60. Legend has it that when in college, McCoy was so proud of his speed and agility that he would taunt potential tacklers who whiffed on him due to his lightning quick elusiveness by whispering ‘McCoy’ into the air as he dodged them. One must wonder if Vick whispered ‘McCoy’ as he was dusting LeSean.

Would be great if he did, and another great legendary story would be born.

  61. Ha, that’s awesome. Now if only Vick could beat McCoy in a passing competition…

  62. Funny how Desperate my Eagle brethren continue to hate on Vick hahahahaha…Sounds like many fear that Vick might actually win the starting job, even with the additions of the NON ATHLETIC, Qb types, Foles , and Barkley.

I wonder if back to back years of being Crushed by 300lb linemen, aided by the Fantastic, Enlightned Play-calling of M.M. or soft WR crew that Disappeared when playing Bigger more physical DB in the game…hmmmm I wonder if that MIGHT have influenced Vicks decision making, or maybe even his accuracy…hmmm NAH… I am sure Brady, Manning,Breese would have taken that beating along with the excellent coaching from the MOST disfunctional coaches under Reid and still comup roses…YEA RIIGGHHTT.

  63. their teammates went nuts because it was the first time in over a year that either of them went 40yds without getting hurt.

  64. I’d love to see the video evidence of said race.

He beat him by 5 yards in a 40 yard dash? I have a hard time believeing that. McCoy would had to have run a 40 on par with some of the “faster” O-lineman to be beat by a 5 full yards. The difference between 4.30 and 4.50 is about a blink and surely isn’t 5 yards difference.

  65. When being asked by an Espn reporter about Vicks speed and the race, McNabb was quoted as saying:

“The boo’ing that I went through at the draft still doesn’t bother me. I swear. Hand to God. Scout’s honor.”

  66. 1trinieagle gets it…… And I’m not an Eagle fan..The hate is hilarious to me….Chip Kelly barring injury will resurrect his career…

Eagles Oline was HORRIBLE! If you disagree then you don’t know football! Now lets see what happens this year…

Be careful wishing for Foles, Dixon or Barkley….Let Vick start out if he tanks THEN make the switch…..

I like the Eagles but man you all have some crazed fans…BOL!

    #Bengals!

  67. speed was never the problem for vick. it was not being a good qb that hurts him. not reading defenses, not getting the ball out in time or fast enough. his speed was the only thing he has that kept him in the nfl this long

  68. DeSean Jackson should have been in the race. He would have smoked them both.

  69. come on shady!!! but glad to see my guy vick still doing it hope it translates into wins in the regular season lets gobirds!!!

  70. I don’t believe it. And I WON’T believe it until I see video proof. I think it’s all hype to build up stock on Vick. I smell a trade coming soon.

  71. Again, why are people acting like Vick is soft. He isnt a star but he has a HUGE heart and gets BLASTED over and over and still plays thru the pain.

Raiderufan, the average blink of an eye is approximately 400 milliseconds or 0.004 seconds.

  73. I wonder if Vick imagined the ghosts of the dead pitbulls were chasing him?

  74. Who cares? He still is a turnover machine who cant read a defense or stay healthy. He doesn’t even have the sense to slide at the end of a run. History has proven QB’s win by throwing not running. I’m just surprised shady was acting like such a punk. Maybe because like so many others, he doesn’t respect Vick’s character.

  75. Everyone is leaving out the most important part that just as the race got under way a fully recovered Pit Bull snuck in chased Vic down the field….

  76. You non-Knowledgeable football people kill me! Not one of you “stupid-dummies” mention the sorry a$$ offensive line that couldn’t protect Mike Vick! On top of that, the last time I checked! No QB has won a superbowl without a good O-Line… I didn’t mention the ones with the great O-Line! You pathetic football fans!

  77. those of u bringing up the dog stuff, get a life and give it a rest!!

  78. Evokes memories of ‘Steamin’ Willie Beamen beating Julian Washington at a 40 yard dash back in 1999. #AnyGivenSunday #MiamiSharks

  79. Well for starters, this was supposed to be a fun and entertaining article but for some reason people still find a way to show how narrowminded and clueless they are about the game of football with their “witty” comments. I’m not surprised Vick won, he’s really fast and i bet he could beat a good amount of current rb’s in a 40 yard race. And soft? After some of the hits ive seen Vick take, im shocked to even see him get up sometimes. If Brady or Manning took half of those hits they’d be out for the season. His line was terrible, period. I’d love to see some of these brilliant posters not fumble when being blindsided by a 300lb pass rusher right in the back. Inaccurate? Short memories much? Remember the year before last when Vick absolutely shredded defenses when given time to throw? Probably not. And finally, to all the “super witty” comedian posters who found some of the lamest ways to involve a dog in their comment, get over it, that was years ago and even the media is creative enough to talk about something else. Oh yeah, and you’re not funny in your attempts, you actually know less about comedy than you do about football

  80. @nohopeleft, Osi’s not laughing at anything he couldn’t catch McCoy when he was running right at him.

  82. You Vick lovers that keep mentioning how bad the O-line was are the ones that are funny.

Foles played behind a worse line with less weapons and did better on offense than Vick. They won less with Foles because at that point, the D was giving up an average of 33 points per game.

Not to mention that you are also forgetting the year before when the line was healthy and he still sucked, or every year he has been in the NFL besides the 8 game stretch in 2010 that he was never a good passer. He has averaged close to a 1.5 turnover per game rate for his career. He has averaged a completion % less than 60% for every year besides 2010. He has averaged less than 7 YPA in most of his years. He could never read a defense.

Please keep telling me or anyone else though that it was just the bad O-line last year though or the bad coaching/playcalling of Reid/Morhinweg.

  85. @usg1, Foles didnt exactly tear it up either and they were losing every game with him too. That alone shows that with a bad offensive line, you dont win with any qb. You say people are using poor o-line play as an excuse, but yet in your arguement you use the poor defense as an excuse for them not winning? Nice contradiction btw. Then you say that the year before when he had a good o-line he still sucked? Really? I remember him being considered for potential mvp, comeback player of the year, and consideration for the madden cover. Do “sucky” players ever get considered for any of those? No, i didnt think so either. I also remember that when Mccoy got injured, Bryce Brown came in and had monster games that more than doubled Mccoys output. So does that mean Mccoy sucks? Does that mean Brown should be the starting rb? No. The only thing here that clearly sucks is your logic

  86. In 2010 Michael Vick played in 12 games. In those games he threw for over 3000 yards and had a td/int ratio of 21 to 6 averaging 8.1 yards per attempt with a qb rating of 100.2 while also rushing for just under 700 yards and 9 more td’s and only losing 3 fumbles. The Eagles were 8-3 with Vick as the starting qb. That same year, Vick set multiple franchise records and was selected to the pro-bowl.
Yeah he sucked alright. I’d take a qb that sucked that bad on my team each and every year. Moron

  87. @choice1329
That comparison is absolutely ludicrous. It’s racist, bigoted babble.

    @drsimester
That was ONE year in a extremely disappointing career, he was also 1 & done in the playoffs with a chance to win late & (surprise) was responsible for a game ending turnover. Very few players get the pass he does, especially after 1 good year. He is a lot like Mark Sanchez, actually if you compare their career stats; they are sadly similar with Sanchez having a much better playoff record. Just as you want to tout 2010, I can give you pathetic stats for the rest of his NFL career.

He is the most over-hyped QB in NFL history. Very few players with the talent he had underachieved as badly as he has. The guy had always had million dollar talent with 10 cents worth of software running it.

  88. Running for your life for 3 hours every Sunday will make you faster. Congratulations to the offensive line for building a faster quarterback.

    ——————————————————

Both McCoy and Vick did nothing in the last meeting when the Giants destroyed the Eagles 42-7. Guess you have to reach for something to be proud of when you’re a fan of a 4-12 team with no rings.

  90. He beat him by 5 yards in a 40 thats 5/40= 1/8 which equals 12 1/2% so if he beat him by 12 1/2%shady ran about a 4.5 than Vick must have ran about a 3.93, not bad for an old man or a cheetah

  91. “Then you say that the year before when he had a good o-line he still sucked? Really? I remember him being considered for potential mvp, comeback player of the year, and consideration for the madden cover. Do “sucky” players ever get considered for any of those? No, i didnt think so either.”

The year before was 2011 & yes he did suck. The year you are referring to was 2010. 3 years ago is decades ago in the NFL. Maybe you forget Shawn Alexander, was the league MVP AND on the cover of Madden. One year later, he was out of the league, wasn’t the same player.

If you take a look at the history of Michael Vick, once he gets the big contract, his play slips. He got that big contract after 2010, going into the 2011 season. And his play turned to sh*t. If you want a guy that gives you 3 bad years, one good year then 2-3 bad years…then Mike Vick is your guy. Consistency has never been a word associated with MV7. But turnovers sure have.

  92. You know I’m glad that this all they really have to talk about for the Philadelphia eagles because honestly you can’t talk about how good they are or how they’re going to score tons of points. I mean I guess this is an exciting story for eagles fans lmao!!! Hey I know when Vick stops throwing the ball to the other team on purpose maybe then he can call himself a quarterback. All he is and has ever been is nothing more than a glorified running back. I’m sorry eagles fans I really am, but it looks like all the team up there knows how to do is beat themselves. So when they decide to get rid of Vick or bench him maybe you guys would have a chance at a wild card spot in the playoffs because honestly I would put money on Chip Kelly coaching back in college come 2 or 3 years from now. Check his resume and actually think unbiasly and you’ll get my drift. But I wish y’all luck in finally learning how to stop beating yourself and learning how to beat other teams. Worst mistake the Eagles team, not the fans(eagles fans are one of the few group of fans I know that think what the team does gives them merit to say stuff like,” so WE benched so and so or WE cut so and so.” Give me a break), is firing Andy Reid. But he probably got tired of the circus act too.
