Evan Mathis has minor ankle procedure

While the Eagles go through the “getting to know you” phase with new coach Chip Kelly, they’re going to have to practice without perhaps their best offensive lineman.

According to Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com, Mathis had a minor procedure on his ankle recently, which was described as a “clean out.”

The procedure will cause the left guard to miss OTAs and minicamps, but he’s expected to be fine well before the start of training camp.

Mathis participated in a pre-draft minicamp, and in his absence, former first-rounder Danny Watkins will get more reps with the starters.

  1. Well, I guess you could call him the Eagles’ best offensive lineman if you don’t count the guys that were injured last year.

  2. Best Lineman, not counting Jason Peters, Todd Herremans or Jason Kelce. Mathis is good, but if the Eagles line is healthy, they are one of the best in the league.

  3. ProFootballFocus has him ranked as the best offensive lineman in the league, and 6th best player in the NFL last year. I’m guessing that’s what the article was alluding to.

FYI Brandon Graham was the only other Eagle player to crack the top 100 (76th).

  4. Yea, He is our best lineman. Peters was our best lineman and hopefully will be again. Kelce isn’t that great and is probably the worst of the bunch who really only fit Mudd’s scheme. Herremans is solid too, but Mathis is definitely our best lineman.

  5. He’s so good that no one offered him big bucks when they had the opportunity. I also don’t see the Eagles throwing big bucks at him.

Then again they may be giving him the hook move same as they do with most of their free agents.

  6. I saw the ProFootballFocus ranking and was shocked. Evan Mathis was definitely the best offensive lineman on the team last year. He was consistent, but I don’t ever remember thinking he was dominating a game. He was never as good as Jason Peters or Shawn Andrews or Tra Thomas or Jon Runyan. Those guys, at times, dominated games. Jason Peters may have been the best lineman in football for a season or so. Tra Thomas and Shawn Andrews were both in the top 5 for a while. Evan Mathis is not one of those guys. Or, maybe it’s just hard to tell when you’re playing next to a bunch of schlubs.

  7. Why is these guys wait for their surgery so long that they miss camps? Why couldn’t he have gotten the surgery done a month or so ago so he’d be ready to learn the new system being installed? I don’t get it, he ‘s not the first to do this thing nor will he be the last, but it just doesn’t make sense!

  8. Evan is at the very least VERY SOLID. I think Watkins makes a comeback and also proves to be solid. If all the lineman come back healthy, The Eagles could arguably go from worst to first.
