A singer who came to prominence on a show that used to dominate the ratings is now joining the top-rated program on primetime television.

Carrie Underwood is the new performer of the opening theme to Sunday Night Football, NBC announced Tuesday. She will first perform in her new role on Sept. 8, when the Giants and Cowboys play in Dallas in the first SNF broadcast of 2013.

“I am thrilled to be a part of NBC’s Sunday Night Football and am so honored they asked me,” Underwood said in a statement released by NBC. “I have always loved football season, and it is so exciting to now become part of it every Sunday night!”

Underwood, a six-time Grammy Award winner who won “American Idol” in 2005, replaces the departing Faith Hill, who sang “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” from 2007 through 2012.

  1. So they replaced one lame, generic blond country music hack singer with a different lame, generic blond country music hack singer.

I want the five seconds it took to read that headline back.

  2. Hoooo-rayyyyy.
    This is important stuff.
I’ll be glued to my seat hours before kickoff so I won’t miss a thing …
    I’m so excited!!!

  3. An announcement for this?? All the song does it delay the start of the game. The opening song is about as important as NFL cheerleaders or the NBA.

This proves the NFL is going the way of the NBA. More entertainment. Less sports.

How about the 10 minutes it took to type that ridiculous statement?

  6. What is with nbc always choosing the no singing country skanks trying to sing a rock song? Go back to Pink or at least somebody that can sing.

  7. any body who would diss carrie underwood is either a weirdo or dillusional

  8. So we went from the country singing blonde that Troy Aikman turned down to the country singing blonde that Tony Romo turned down.

What’s with NBC’s interest in the ex-girlfriends of Dallas Cowboys QBs?

    Noooooooooo.

    Tony? That you? Lol

  10. Just bring back Hank. It is so messed up in our culture that someone like Kluwe can publish obscenity fueled hatred towards individuals and we applaud him but then if Hank questions the actions of a politician we have to fire him.

Crazy double standard in this country. You have the freedom of speech, but if you exercise that freedom in a way that is counter to the status quo of the progressive liberals running mainstream media then you are removed from working in mainstream media.

Yay America. Obviously it is working though because everyone can agree things are really getting better under the current leadership. Ostricizing folks like Hank for a controversial view that has nothing to do with the job he was hired to do, and was doing well, is sure bringing us together as a people and culture. It is especially nice knowing that when people were making basically the same exact accusations towards Bush during his presidency they were basically applauded for it.

At some point people need to wake up to what is being done.

  11. In a league with so many black stars, they need to throw the racists a bone.

  12. Who’s going to sing the opening song for MNF? What about the Sunday afternoon games?

These are very important questions that need to be answered before the season starts.

  13. Major upgrade. Faith Hill was awful. Awful music, not a real country artist. Her biggest hit was a horrible bubblegum pop song, not even country. Carrie is infinitely more talented and has much better music. Also, the last public appearance Faith made, her face look really weird. Too much botox, I assume. Barely recognizable.

  14. It would be really cool if they let her take a baseball bat to one of the players vehicle .

Maybe even the Madden Cruiser…..LOL……Just kidding Big Guy.

Obviously Dallas QBs get the hottest women…

There’s a Tony Romo joke here somewhere.

Why do you watch sports? To be entertained, no? Sports = entertainment.

  18. Faith Hill must have been a big hit on their salary cap.

    Bring on the “ROOKIE”. LOL

  19. I was hoping they would just stop doing the stupid song. It’s lame.

If Romo was 1/10th as good at his job as Underwood hers…then Cowboys would be ok….And about Romo turning her down..dream on.

  21. Romo and Underwood…let the tabloid fodder begin. Why not Underwood anyway? Faith Hill has spent the last few yrs trying to look like Carrie Underwood, so I guess this…is…an upgrade?

  22. Theytukrjobs,

He was on MNF, not SNF.

And he didnt get in any legal trouble for what he said (that freedom of speech thing you mentioned at work), but any organization can choose to have who they want representing them. The NFL (or ESPN, or both) said, “wow, he just made a whole lot of people mad and he represents us, so therefore we can/will draw criticism for having him continue to represent us.”

Boom, gone. It makes perfect sense…and he still has all the freedom of speech anyone else has.

  23. Relax people. It’s the intro to a football game. Geez, just dial it back a little bit.

  24. Not another generic blonde. Shakira would have been better.

  25. Let me guess, next year Taylor Swift?

Wouldn’t it be less expensive (and just as effective) to CGI a singing mouth onto a blonde inflatable doll?

The opening credits to SNF look like they were created by an art director who hates football. I stand along side everyone else who is saying get rid of the song — although the herd of goats does sound intrigueing.

Boo! I was hoping for someone less bland. I’d prefer Trent Reznor.

    __________

Yeah cuz NIN is sooooooo fresh….oh wait…

    I thumbs’d you down…k thanks, bye.

  27. They should’ve hired the singer from Culture Club. She was hot.

  28. Actually … they should have brought in Motörhead to do the SNF them to the tune of Ace of Spades. That would get the pregame adrenalin pumping!

  29. I certainly don’t mind looking at Hill or Underwood, but that doesn’t mean I want to hear them sing.

I keep the sound down when I watch SNF anyway, because I can’t stand Christine Collinsworth, both his voice and the BS he spouts. What would he know about throwing a block or a WR going over the middle? He never did either in his tenure with the Bagels.

  30. Why do we even need a singer before a Sunday Night Game?

I honestly look forward to hearing that NBC theme music played before the game (better than FOX and CBS) over some country singer lip-synching over some record.

Whoever orchestrated that theme is genius!

  31. Faith Hill is gorgeous and can sing. This synthetic replacement, not so much.

  32. U guys might not like country music but it takes more vocal skill then rap or screamo… Good choice!!! Didnt know if u sang country that u were a hack. Some of u are clueless!!!

  33. Well, we know she probably won’t butcher it like most have done to our National Anthem.

  34. Why not Beyoncé? How about Katy Perry? Maybe Rihanna? I’m starting to see a trend.

    ——————————————————

I wasn’t for Underwood, but who the hell would want Beyoncé, Rihanna or Katy Perry?

  35. We dodged a bullet, folks. I’ll bet anything that Roger Goodell was pushing for Justin Bieber.

  36. Good choice. I think the singer for shows should be changed more frequently to keep it interesting. Hank Jr. sang MNF like forever.

Since it’s SNF is on NBC, maybe have the winner of “The Voice” sing it every season. Continue the trend to shamelessly promote other shows during shows.

  37. And you thought Faith was pissed when Carrie beat her out for Female Singer of the Year?!?! Bwahahahaha!

  38. If they can create a tiger for Life of Pi, why not bring back Hank Williams Sr or Michael Jackson? Now THAT would be worth watching!

  39. I am tired of all this bad country crap on mnf. What about dwight yoakam? This must be sucking up to the south.

  40. Geez…how so very vanilla of them! I second the idea of bringing back Hank Williams Jr (senior has been dead since the 50’s fyi!) At least Jordin Sparks has a familial connection to the NFL with her dad playing for the Giants!

Nah, she would only sing about the players who had just broken up with their girlfriends on their birthdays…

  42. I guess different strokes for different folks! I can care less who sings it, my questions is why it’s always a country music singer? They should take out the vocals and use the old MNF soundtrack.

You need to hand over your man card,if you care if she’s a good singer or not.

My daughter looks almost exactly like Underwood, so you perverts all need to shut the hell up. And no, you can’t have her phone number.

  44. What happened to Faith Hill?

I guess the ole Mare ain’t what she use to be.

  45. THANK GOD! Our long national nightmare is over! We’ve been without a singer for a lame intro for TOO LONG, thank goodness the spot has been filled!

And anyone clamoring for Hank Williams must have sustained a serious head injury at some point. Thank god he opened his big stupid mouth and ended the agony of having to listen to his stupid song.

  46. Jesus take the wheel and drive this retard off a cliff. So sick of Carrie Underwear, time for the mute button!

  47. Perfect.

They couldn’t find a better pick if they could build one from scratch.

    Future legend in country music.

    Beautiful, hot, smart.

Knows sports (played basketball and softball in high school) and loves football (cheerleader in high school.)
