Redskins sign center Kevin Matthews

AP

The Redskins have added some veteran center depth, signing ex-Titans lineman Kevin Matthews to a contract, the club said Tuesday.

Terms of the deal were not announced. Kevin Matthews is the son of Hall of Fame offensive lineman and current Titans offensive line coach Bruce Matthews.

Matthews (6-3, 302) appeared in 14 games for Tennessee in 2012, starting two games at center. The Titans did not make him a contract offer in restricted free agency, making him as an unrestricted free agent free to sign elsewhere.

Will Montgomery is Washington’s starting center. Kory Lichtensteiger, the Redskins’ starting left guard, was listed as his backup in 2012. If the 26-year-old Matthews can show he’s a capable reserve center and guard, he would likely help his case to make the team, as versatile backup offensive linemen can be very helpful — and perhaps even a necessity — with teams facing the 46-player active-roster limit on gameday.

  1. I.hope he likes losing, cause thats all they do in redskins land, Fail!!!

  2. Wait… what? All I read on this site is how this team is already perfect. Unclear why the need a new player.

  3. Been watching this kid for four years. He has a ton of potential. I think it’s going to be good for him and his father that his dad will no longer be coaching him. (It will “free” both of them up.) If by chance Kevin never becomes the Skins’ starting center, note that he’s also shown promise as a long-snapper. Good signing, you guys.

    Respect,
    Titans Fan

  4. Sounds like this kid has ton of potential. With how injuries occur along the O line, depth is always a good thing. Also love the bloodline.

  5. You think this bloodline is strong? Check out Steeler Nation. We have divine blood that permits us to be apart of the team. Why do you think we are so much more successful than you?

  6. Sorry to hear that Kevin, but hey at least you’re not on the Raiders. Wait, then again…..

  7. It shows the incredible power and respect the Redskins brand has that a great player like Matthews would leave a team where he was coached by his dad to come to the Redskins. HTTR.

  8. Just keep signing good quality competition, the depth is getting better slowly but surely. This guy will compete with LeRibeus, Hurt, and the other interior linemen. Why not bring him in and see who wins out in camp for a roster spot?

BTW, kid, I just hope you didn’t expect much $$, though, they got a bit of a cap problem this season….Make the team they’ll give ya a good deal next spring…..??

  9. Two things…

Logical Voice is laughing at you guys, writing his posts for him. He is a puppet master.

How bad is it when your dad is your position coach and the team declines to make you an offer? In my book, pretty bad…but maybe what he needs is a fresh start.

Are you fools sitting at home on welfare?? You’ve got WAY too much free time if you are sitting around hating on the NFC East champs this often. Stop being a drain on society, move out of your mom’s basement, get a girlfriend, and find a job.

    The definition of apart is????

Steelers are trending down on talent and up in age!

  12. Oh!…….Didn’t they tell you upstairs Kevin,…….this year the Redtails won’t actually be able to pay you,……..in cash. But, we can give you a 100-coupon book for Jack-In-The-Box, so you won’t starve during the season!

Clearly your divine blood permits you and the reality to be apart as well.

I couldn’t resist that, but ragging on this guy isn’t exactly fair. He’s just another Logicvoice– there’s no way he’s an actual Steelers fan.

  14. haha leaving the team with his dad? He was a backup that didnt get offered a contract. Which means his own dad wouldn’t sign him!

Redskins were the only team dumb enough to sign him. That is the truth

  15. The Tennessee oilers commenter, you are so very wrong. If you had been following Kevins career you would of seen how every single game he played it, he did terrible. Kevin was on the Titans because his Dad(coach) made sure he was on the team and phuckingeagle you are RIGHT. His own dad wouldn’t resign him! I love my RedSKINS, but how stupid are WE!! You’ve got to be really bad when your own dad won’t resign you after making sure you made the team for years
