Chris Kluwe says he’s signing with Raiders on Thursday

The Raiders added one piece to their special teams when they signed kick returner Josh Cribbs this week and it looks like they’ll be adding another piece on Thursday.

Punter Chris Kluwe, who was released by the Vikings earlier this month, told fellow NFL player and marriage equality activist Brendon Ayanbadejo that he has agreed to a contract with the Raiders. Ayanbadejo broke word of the signing on FOXSports.com and says that the Raiders are expected to officially announce their deal with Kluwe, who grew up in California, on Thursday.

“I’m excited to be an Oakland Raider and be playing in California,” Kluwe said. “Now, my family can actually come to games. Hopefully, I’ll be able to play for the next seven years and end my career in California.”

Kluwe’s release drew criticism from some who felt that the Vikings parted ways with the punter because of his willingness to speak his mind and wear his heart on his sleeve when it came to issues like same-sex marriage and Ray Guy’s absence from the Hall of Fame. Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton, who signed the law allowing same-sex marriage in the state this week, was among that group but Kluwe said he didn’t know whether his outspoken ways were the reason why the Vikings drafted a punter to replace him. Kluwe told Ayanbadejo that he will “still be myself socially” as a member of the Raiders.

According to reports on Wednesday, the Raiders will have to clear some space on the roster to officially add both Cribbs and Kluwe to the roster. Once Kluwe gets there, he’ll share time at practice with 2012 undrafted free agent signing Marquette King. The Raiders liked King enough to keep him on injured reserve last year while Shane Lechler did the punting and he’s back on the roster this year.

  1. good for you opinion boy(no offense just a funny name). Now you can be in your native california and get paid big $(a 100 g’s + is alot for a punter). lucky guy. I am having a hard time imagining him in silver and black compared to purple. weird.

  2. Good signing by the Raiders. I bet he out-punts Locke this season. I’m glad he was able to catch on with a Cali team so he can be close to his home & family. Best of luck, Mr. Kluwe!

  3. I guess Reggie wasn’t kidding when he said there will be comp at every position. Thought King had the job, guess he will have to prove himself first .. ( which is the way it should be )

  4. Not too excited to have a punter who’s better known for what he says than how he performs on the field. Seem’s like a bit of a drama queen to be adding to a team that’s trying to eliminate the unnecessary nonsense.

  5. Makes me wonder what my Vikes are thinking. Kluwe was reasonably priced and a solid contributor, we have so many holes and we’re dumping pieces that were working just fine. Makes no sense. Good luck, Chris! We’ll miss you in Minnesota!

  6. If King is able to show he’s reaching his potential I think Kluwe ends up a camp leg…I really think a consistent King will be a weapon for the Raiders. His kicks are impressive!

  7. I can NOT picture this.

It’s like when Richie Cunningham joined that gang.

And what about Tripping Icarus? First The Beatles and now this.

  8. He was really not good last year. (22nd in gross average, 17th in net average, 31st punting inside the 20, 27th in fair catches – meaning his punts were returned, etc). Wonder what the postings will be when he is cut at the end of camp.

Can’t blame his beliefs at that point.

  9. Congrats. Yet another non all star roster filler. Commitment to mediocrity.

Ahh, his shanking of punts over the last few years had nothing to do with it also? As a Vikes fan, and Kluwe follower, his punting had been more inconsistant over the past few years. He was rock solid for the first part of his career, and his decline is ot about net avg yrds, it had more to do with his directional kicking and the several punts that were just flat out bad.

  11. I do not understand all the press regarding Kluwe getting cut from the Vikings and the reasons they did cut him, I remember last year the big fuss over the Vikings cutting Longwell and the rookie kicker did a great job. I think the Vikings cut him because the young guy has a stronger leg.

  12. I like competetion at all positions but seems King is not quite there and from what I hear Kluwe is pretty good, a little weirdo but good. We shall see.

  13. i still think King will beat him out. In all reality he beat out Lechler last year.

  14. Best VIkings punter in the history s of the Vikings for our team the Vikes! Wish he was in the team still still it probably was with the gay coommunity in Minneapolis for him. #skol

  15. Good luck, Chris.

Love the quote “marriage equality activist”. I wonder what term the author would use for
    Matt Birk?

Would Birk be considered “traditional marriage
activist” or an “anti-equality marriage bigot”?

  16. He is going to a team with a long history of tolerance and support for social justice. We know that the squeaky uptight conservative owners of most NFL franchises don’t want to have clue or a Kluwe so it is good that there are a few open minded and progressive organizations in the NFL. Al would approve.

  17. I like this signing. This is a great location for Kluwe and his family. Plus with his social commentary (although he didn’t lose his job because of it), he’s going to be in a place where there are a lot more like-minded people. The Bay Area is a historic place for expressing socio-political issues.

That said, he can’t just go in there thinking he has the job locked down. He’s going to have to battle pretty hard to earn that starting position.

  18. Why do you keep using the term “marriage equality” when referring to Kluwe? From what I’ve read he doesn’t want marriage equality for everyone, he just wants special marriage rights for a small group of people. Its a classic case of special interest lobbying so be honest, please.

  19. It’s called competition. Let’s see how King responds. Hopefully King can be more consistent and win the starting job.

Whatever the reason he was let go, who gives a rip. Just like I don’t give a rip about what Ayanbadejo has to say.

  20. He’s inextricably linked to marriage equality, but the dude is funny. He’s a good writer. I’m glad he’s signing somewhere and wish him the best.

Is he implying that his family wasn’t allowed to attend games in Minnesota?

    ——-

@Rick. His family must stay back in California. I guess he couldn’t afford to fly them out to attend games…

Whose reality are you talking about? King was wildly inconsistent in preseason last year.

  23. Sounds like away to sell tickets . I know that sounds bad but The Raiders are trying to get a stadium deal which I really hope happens for them in the east bay .As was said earlier , that is a sizable amount of coin for a player that will more than not get cut . Best of luck to him .

  24. @thatstinks

I’m sorry, are you suggesting that the Raiders signed Chris Kluwe to “sell tickets?” Because I don’t think that’s going to work….

  25. Hah, whatever happened to the “tough-guy” image of the raiders? This dude is a whiny little pansy.

  26. I know some Raiders fans will thumbs down my comment but….

Too bad he’s joining a team that is 10 years away from ever contending. Probably took the job because it’s in warm weather California.

  27. Kluwe had to punt more than any punter in the NFL last year with so many three and outs. He realling is a good Punter. His stats are bad from the way he started the season. Kluwe was kicking great during the run to the play-offs.

Good Luck to him and he’s also a great place holder for extra points and field goals.

  28. “Kluwe’s release drew criticism from some”

Who? I never heard any criticism. Plenty of chatter, but no criticism. The Vikings did what they thought was best for their team. Good luck with the Raiders, Chris.

  29. Both Colquitts, Schifres (sp?), and now Kluwe…

AFC West the Gold Standard 4 punters!

  30. Hope Kluwe does well, good luck to him.
He’s gonna need it, being surrounded by such a parasitically losing culture. I just hope Reggie counted his roster correctly this time, it would be a shame if someone of Kluwe’s caliber didn’t make the roster because Reggie has trouble counting to 90.

No team is 10 years away from contending, idiot.

  32. It will be interesting to see what he gets paid & what the difference is from what he was supposed to get from the Vikings. do the Raiders still over pay with al gone now?

  33. honestly, I hope he has the best year of his career, and the vikings new punter fails miserably.

It would be poetic justice for the worst franchise and fan base in sports.

  34. He never said he was happy to be a Raider he was happy to be in Cali. This way he can get his band going to new events, get into gaming with a new west coast crowd, continue the drive to have men marry men and also,,,,,,,last but not least,,,,,,,,,Punt the ball 60 yards from the 50.
