Sanchez says nothing changed for him with Garrard leaving

David Garrard’s decision to throw in the towel on his bid to make the Jets because of a knee injury is the latest curveball in a quarterback competition that’s had plenty of them with months to go before the Jets ever play a game.

With Garrard out, it would seem that Mark Sanchez’s chances of sticking with the team into the 2013 season would improve since the team’s other quarterbacks all have little to no experience at the professional level. Sanchez addressed his role in what he called a “fierce” competition on Thursday — yes, he was wearing a headband at the time — and said it doesn’t feel any different to him than it did before Garrard’s announcement.

“Nothing’s changed. My mindset is the same,” Sanchez said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

While his chances of making the team might have improved, Sanchez’s answer makes plenty of sense. He was competing for the starting job against Garrard and company before, so Garrard’s departure just means that it is a slightly different cast of competitors as opposed to a completely different situation. Geno Smith, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms are still in camp and Sanchez still has to beat them out to get the nod for a fifth straight season.

Sanchez was also asked about Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith’s comment that he wouldn’t catch “a paper bag sandwich” thrown by Sanchez. Sanchez wished Smith and the Panthers well, which should pretty much end that storyline while the quarterback competition rages on.

  1. If the Jets were smart(they’re not) they would let Sanchez play out this year and let him walk after the year.
Let Geno Smith have a year under his belt to learn a system, NFL defenses, and to ease into his role as starting QB(lol)

Here is what will likely happen
    1)Sanchez “wins” the qb “competition”(lol)
    2)Struggles as usual.
3)Fan base, owner get antsy and throw Geno to the fire and he has a couple decent games and a lot of bad ones. His development perma stalls and he becomes a lackluster QB as everyone thought.

  2. “Nothing’s changed. I’m still nothing more than a back-up quarterback at best.” Sanchez then added: “And Steve Smith doesn’t have to worry about me throwing a sandwich at him. I wouldn’t be able to hit him anyway.”

  3. Too bad the Jets are too stupid to realize he is the best QB on that team. But when it’s one guy on offense vs. 11 on defense, Sanchez has never stood a chance.

  4. That many years in the league and that much money… I would call the career a success.

  5. McElroy wins the job sanchez holds the clip board smith sits and all 3 get dropped at end of season seriously at least McElroy has a winning track record so he gets killed by the opponents d then throw sanchez in to finish out his 8 mil contract saving geno for next year after going 5-11 maybe cause of a few games stolen by the jets d they will get another 2-3 good young studs to work with geno after getting a high draft seed about 7-8 th pick which means 2 of the top 40

  6. Stay healthy geno, and learn the playbook. You’ll be under center come week 8.

  7. He might be a butt fumbling clown but…

He’s won more playoff games than Carson Palmer, Sam Bradford, Tony Romo, Jay Cutler, Alex Smith, Matthew Stafford and Matt Ryan.

He plays for a head coach that’s clueless about offense.

He played for an offensive coordinator (Sparano) who was clueless about being clueless.

His ex-GM (Tannenbaum) drafted ZERO wide receivers or tight ends, signed Plaxico Burress, and got rid of his favorite wide receiver Jerricho Cottchery for no real reason.

    Last but not least….

Sanchez is HISPANIC. Deal with it VATOS!

  8. I’d seriously consider giving McElroy a shot–if it weren’t for all that money they are paying Sanchez and Smith should be third string and learn, build his game, really learn the offense–plus seeing how he responds to being third string will go a long way in telling if he truly is a diva or can handle adversity, which is just as important as the football intangibles, skills and knowing the playbook; IMO.

I agree with the other poster who said they roll the dice with McElroy he may just surprise some people and at worst case, they get a high draft pick (I think they are destined for a High Pick anywhere from 1-15). The talent pool next year looks much better than this year’s class across lots of positions. And yes, finishing 1-15 means netting two really high prospects, that if Idzik hits on correctly in the draft–could significantly improve this Jets team, regardless of who is coaching them after this season.

  9. Even without Tebow being on the team, we’re getting Jets and Sanchez stories every day. And it’s only May!!! Can’t wait till July!!!

  10. Just give the job to the rookie and turn the page on the whole butt fumble Sanchise era…

  11. I’m not sticking up for this guy BUT he did improve every year in this league until last season.
Face it … He had no running game and no #1 WR and any average qb who does not have that … usually has crappy stats.

  12. Teams with zero hope for the 2013/2014 season:

  13. What the H is a paper bag sandwich? Is the paper bag like the meat n cheese of the sandwich? Or do you use the paper bag(s) like bread? Do you just fill the bag with stuff and eat it, kind of like a burrito? Come on Steve, help me out here!

And your point is what? He’s good? Sanchez (like the jets in general) lucked into the fluke playoff appearances and were tossed both years.

Based on franchise history they may not make it back for decades. Point is, his stats have ALWAYS been at the bottom of the league and he doesn’t have the head or arm to be good.
    Stop making excuses.

  15. I can’t believe people still make excuses for Sanchez even worse there are a few that think Greg McElroy is an answer at qb. Come on people

  16. Jet should have hard balled Sanchez and told him take a big pay cut or the team would cut him and take the cap hit and be done with it.

He has to know he’d be lucky to get anything but the vet minimum anywhere else and would likely have taken a significant cut.

  17. northstarnic- You take a sandwich, preferably pastrami on pumpernickel, and you put it in a paper bag. You roll the bag closed and place a rubber band around it. Then you give it to Mark Sanchez, who examines it for several minutes. Seeing Smith downfield, he throws it, but it veers into the waiting hands of Richard Sherman.

Mark, then congratulates himself on another job well done.

No one cares about the Jets. The suck anyway and have a horrible coach. New York should be embarrassed

Speaking of embarrassed, your name is “rightwingguy.”

  19. As a Pats fan I hate the Jets. But its not fair to hate on Sanchez when he has an awful O-line, no runnibg game, and your favorite receiver was Dustin Keller. He has zero weapons around him.

So instead of trying to help the offense you go DT, CB, and QB with 9% of the first 40 picks and you do nothing to help your offense.

Wallace was a FA so was Welker. Could make an offer on Cruz, but they didn’t do a damn thing to help Sanchez. The Pats got much better on Defense and I’m willing to bet the offense is as good. Miami just might make a playoff push and Buffalo is moving in the right direction.

So Jets fans get ready to enjoy another top draft pick for a few years and get ready to blame Sanchez when you all should be pointing at Ryan.

  20. Sanchez is the best QB the JETS have ! He has won 4 playoff games for the JETS! #6 has no wide outs to throw too and the JETS have a poor offensive line that allows #6 to get hurt all the time. Geno Smith is a big Diva and he is not the answer! Mark Sanchez is the real deal. JETS fans be proud that he is your franchise QB

  21. It seems that there are those people out there that are always claiming that they know the game of Football
and yet what they spew is a vitriol mess on sheer ignorance and hate. Im not an expert Im just a Real JETS Fan
who has been a fan when they were called the Titans. Ive seen the gloriou of Namath and the days of Kotite.
But what I have been seeing is so much hate for a player like Sanchez.
When he took the jets to two championships none of you real fans were saying anything now you hate.
Sanchez will be ok really ok and if it doesn’t work out lol NE will take him, its called Irony.
