Clay Harbor looking at new position to try to stick

Eagles tight end Clay Harbor showed promise last year as a pass-catcher.

But he went from second in line to fourth in a hurry this offseason, and that traffic could send him to the other side of the ball.

According to Bob Grotz of the Delaware County Times, Harbor’s getting a look at outside linebacker to see if he can increase his chances of hanging around.

“I’m going to go out there and play as hard as I can and hopefully I’ll be able to help this team win,” Harbor said. “That’s really as far as I look into it. Obviously there’s a good chance that I could be somewhere else but right now I’m just focused on being the best player I can and helping this team win if it’s special teams, if it’s switching positions or playing a couple of different positions.

“I’m trying a little outside linebacker, actually, to be more versatile. So we’ll see how it works out.”

Harbor’s enough of an athlete, running a 4.58-second 40 at his pro day, with a 40-inch vertical leap. That makes them wonder how the 6-foot-3, 252-pounder can make the transition. “

It’s a new position,” Harbor said. “I’m just basically going through the beginning stages of it. Learning some coverages and learning just the defense — when I’m blitzing, when I’m covering, when I’m dropping into zone. Any way I can help the team is where my mindset is right now.”

That might not be on offense any more. The Eagles had a starter in Brent Celek, then signed free agent James Casey and drafted Zach Ertz in the second round.

And while the Eagles are going to use tight ends more this year, there still might not be enough opportunity for Harbor, so he’ll take it where it comes.

  1. Has talent so , it must be his speed. He will be picked up by a team, that’s for sure. LB, not going to happen. Personally, I think he has one up on Celek. But, Im not the coach.

  2. I say give him a try, could’nt be any worse than those washed up skins lb’s. HAIL

  3. didn’t they also sign Conner Barwin this offseason? he made the same transition from TE to OLB when the Texans drafted him outta Cincinnati a few years ago. possible, but not likely to get the same results.

  4. Barwin moved from scrub back up TE to All Big East DE in college, and then OLB in pros.
