The Dolphins drafted a pair of players named Dion last month and they announced Friday that they have agreed to a contract with one of them.
Tight end Dion Sims, selected in the fourth round with the 106th overall pick, signed his four-year rookie deal with the team. That leaves third overall pick Dion Jordan as one of the five players left unsigned in the Dolphins’ draft class. Sims, linebacker Jelani Jenkins, kicker Caleb Sturgis and cornerback Don Jones are the players the Dolphins have under contract.
Sims caught 36 passes for 475 yards as a junior at Michigan State before going pro, but he drew more attention for his blocking skills at the collegiate level. Sims has a big body -- he’s listed at 262 pounds by the Dolphins, but was often listed in the 280s while in Lansing -- and used it to good effect in the running game to become one of the top blockers at the position in this year’s draft.
That should make him a good complement for the more receiving-minded Dustin Keller in Miami. Charles Clay and Michael Egnew will also be fighting for snaps at tight end this summer for the Dolphins.
