The Dolphins are getting closer to signing all of their draft picks.

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports that running back Mike Gillislee, a fifth-round pick in April, has signed his contract with the team. According to the report, Gillislee’s four-year deal is worth $2.322 million and he received a signing bonus of $162,800.

Gillislee will fight Daniel Thomas for snaps behind projected starter Lamar Miller in 2013. After the draft, Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland said (via the Miami Herald) that he thought Gillislee could handle himself in pass protection. If that proves to be true, that skill could help push him into a third-down role on the offense this season. He ran for 1,152 yards and 10 touchdowns at Florida in 2012.

With Gillislee in the fold, the Dolphins have now signed five of their nine draft picks from last month.

  1. Nice pick by the Fins. This kid tore up LSU who just had six of their defensive players selected in the first three rounds of the 2013 draft.

  2. Gillislee ran for 1,200 yards last year when everyone knew he was the only real threat on that offense nd he did it against some studly SEC defenses. One of his best games was against LSU and their entire defense is in the NFL now. He could be this year’s Alfred Morris if he gets enough carries.

  3. Gillislee would not surprise me if he became number 1 for the fins. He has extremely great ball security, decent at blocking and he has ran against better defenses then miller ever did. Also he is a no bull type of guy and doesn’t make any trouble. He is possibly real perfect for philbin and us fin fans.

  4. I thought he was a steal! You guys are right on him running w/success in the SEC, ( the most NFL like conference won the defense side) And yes against my Lsu tigers, although they played in the swamp! Another 2 thumbs up for Ireland!

  5. Daniel Thomas might have something to say about who starts….if he fails to beat out Miller and Gillislee is he not a bust?

  6. I like this kid. I like Miller too. If they split carries then neither will look great (individual yardage stats) but combined the rush game will be quite good. They could easily combine for 1700-2100 yards, 10 rushing TDs and 5-6 receiving TDs. Thomas has been a major disappointment and should have a smaller role (assuming he is healthy and competent enough to make the roster)
