The Panthers doubled up on defensive tackles to open the draft, and now they’ve gotten half of them under contract.

The team just announced they had signed second-rounder Kawann Short, the 44th overall pick.

“We are very pleased to have Kawann under contract,” Panthers General Manager Dave Gettleman said. “We felt he was the best pass-rushing defensive tackle in the draft, and we are excited about what he can bring to our defensive front.”

A penetrator to go with first-rounder Star Lotulelei, Short has a chance to get plenty of snaps even with the retention of free agent Dwan Edwards. A four-year starter at Purdue, Short had 19.5 sacks and blocked a school-record eight kicks.

And while it’s just on paper at the moment, the additions this offseason give them a chance to have a solid and deep defensive front, which they’ll need to help mask the deficiencies in the back.

  1. I understand completely… what Gettlemen is doing with such little cap room… and now restructuring d. williams contract… imagine if he could had obtain Woodson… when he just signed to the raiders for a contract worth less than 2 mil??? he has upgraded this team amazingly with nothing…

  2. agreed. It will be very interesting to see if their slew of nickel CBs, young and old, will step up. the talent is there…and the ‘experts’ always say the best pass defense is a pass rush. double digit true ends, big bodies in the middle, leagues leading tackler…

season cant come soon enough. damn!

  3. feelnsavage

ur right he is doing an amazing job right now. shows you what happens when football minded business people run the show…

i cant believe beason hasnt restructured. everyone has, except him. he restructures…panthers offseason moves become relevant again.

  4. beason shouldn’t have to restructure. this may be his last contract and he’s been a dedicated team player/captain. he helped kuechly too. guy deserves to cash out

  5. hes played like 5 games since signing a 55 mil (2 seasons ago) contract extension…if that isnt cashing out, well i dont know what it is.

  6. I like this, however, I think even with a good pass rush the DBs have to be somewhat decent. We have Charles Godfrey and that’s about it…the only thing that makes me feel like its gonna be okay is the fact that Gamble was out a lot last year including all the games down the stretch..the d played well against some decent passing teams
