WWE may come calling for players who get cut from the NFL

Hundreds of players will get cut by NFL players before the start of the regular season, and most of those players will keep working out and hoping for another chance at making it in professional football.

But some of those players may try to make it in professional wrestling.

Jim Ross, who works with World Wrestling Entertainment in talent development, has a meeting scheduled with the NFL Players Association today in which he’ll make the case that football players who lose their jobs on NFL teams should be informed that a second career in pro wrestling may be available to them.

Everybody doesn’t make the 53-man roster,” Ross told Alex Marvez and Jim Miller on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “Some guys are going to be looking for work, and we’ve got some job openings. Maybe we can put the synergies of those two entities together and create something wonderful some day.”

From the WWE’s perspective, it’s easy to see why this makes sense: Pro wrestling needs big, strong, agile athletes, and football produces lots of those. And some of the guys cut by the NFL would bring name recognition from their playing days into the wrestling ring.

There’s also a long history of athletes dabbling in both wrestling and football, from Bronko Nagurski to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and dozens of others in between. If you’re a football player who couldn’t quite make it in the NFL, you could do worse than turning to wrestling.

  1. Too bad the healthcare and retirement benefits are waaaaay different in the WWE. But if you’re a juicer and have some basic acting skills, the WWE might be right for you!

  2. If this doesn’t have Tebow written all over it, then I don’t know what does…

  3. Hundreds of players will get cut by NFL players before the start of the regular season

Wow! It really is a dog-eat-dog world when NFL players are being cut by other players!

  4. Scripted or not, wrestling is a dangerous profession. Too many wrestlers not much older than me dying from heart attacks or murder/suicide.

  5. Oh God (no pun intended) would they make a huge face out of Tim Tebow. Don’t follow WWE much anymore, but I still support what they do. It’s a huge global culture. Cut players could become big names and make just as much as they would if they hadn’t got cut.

  6. dont forget about goodson and cliff harris. They would fit in perfect with that white trash low life so called sport

  7. Or play rugby… 2016 Olympics and international exposure.

And AD should have his people reach out to Magelby if he really wants to participate in a summer olympics. He’d be nasty with Carlin Isles.

  8. Pro wrestling is like golf: No age bearer. Participants can do it well into their 70s.

  9. I don’t watch wrestling at all anymore because of how terrible it is. However there are a lot worse jobs out there financially for people.

Pro wrestling is like golf: No age bearer. Participants can do it well into their 70s.
That could not be any further than the truth.
WWE is not looking for old guys they are looking for young guys. WWE has no wrestlers who are 70s years old and still wrestling. I NEVER HEARD OF ONE 70 year old wrestler ever. I think this is a great idea,If u have the look and the ability then you can make some serious dough in WWE. Guys who made it work are Bill Goldberg, The Rock and a host of others. You need to actually have ability though, Pro wrestling is not easy thing to do. Remember LT tried! He was awful

  11. I didn’t say the WWE was looking for old guys. But “old guys” certainly do exist in the company.
Both Vern Gagne and Lou Thiese wrestled well past the age of 60. Thiese was in his 70s.
Both Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan were still on the circuit in their 60s. I’m pretty sure Bruno Sammartino was still wrestling near the age of 60, if not, certainly well into his 50s. Even the so-called younger guys are in their 40s.

  12. The Flying Flacco
    T-Sizzle Fizzle
    Jacoby Ballerina
    Ngata Chance

    My Baltimore WWE Mt Rushmore.

  13. I have to admit, I would pay 50 bucks to see Tebow act like he is praying at center ring before locking up with Abdullah the Butcher.

That would be much better value than seeing a fake prayer and a football drilled into the dirt seven times in a row.

  14. T.O and Ocho Cinco against Jamarcus Russell and Vince Young is a headliner!!!

Jamarcus tries to eat T.O and Chad gives him the signature headbutt, VY still thinks hes on a dream team waiting to get in, but realizes he is just a backup and will never get in the ring.

  15. Hulks still wrestling in tna lol he’s gotta be at least 70. flair is willing to wrestle again wwe wont let him. I’d do it if I got cut better than working at some Resturaunt or gas stop somewhere

  16. Scripted or not, wrestling is a dangerous profession. Too many wrestlers not much older than me dying from heart attacks or murder/suicide.

The same could be said about pro football players.

  17. This has Sean Merriman written all over it. We already no he’s beast when he’s allowed to juice. Plus he already has entrance music and a little dance.

  18. Love how people still pull the”fake” card and try to laugh at it….hey, the secret is out, people know it’s just a show, even McMahon said it’s “sports entertainment”, try something more original than “fake”. By the way, these “fake” wrestlers could still beat the living hell out of you, and I’m sure some of the divas could too.

  19. No mention of Ernie “The Big Cat” Ladd? He was a success in both football and wrestling.

  20. Was going to ask about Ernie Ladd! Is he still wrestling? Also, you all have it wrong, this move is about the WWE trying to incorporate the butt-fumble as a move.

  21. I won’t mock wrestling as “fake” … not after hearing about how Haku ripped a dude’s ear off at an airport back in the day.

Them wrestlers don’t joke around about that stuff, most of these dudes have amateur wrestling backgrounds or are just huge dudes in general…

  22. NFL recruit WWE wrestlers? Is there even a rule for bringing a steel chair onto the field?

“Romo back to pass, uh no, STEEL CHAIR, RIGHT TO THE HEAD OF TONY ROMO, THAT SOB the ref didn’t see it”

  23. Tebow would be a WWE marketing dream in the South with all the evangelicals.

  24. CM Punk vs. John Cena (with Tim Tebow in his corner) has WrestleMania written over it.

  25. I’m confused, aren’t the synergies together now?

Players practice the game script during the week to perform it on Sundays.

  26. There is a guy in WWE right now that played college ball for the Gators. His ring name is Titus O’neil. He’s a big dude.

  27. Makes sense. If a guy has a presence in front of the cameras, he could make a ton of money. We already know they can handle the athletic part of it.

  28. Tebow would be a monster star playing the straight Christian character. Too late to be a Hulk Hogan “goodie two shoes heel” because this is the fallen WWF where the best way to turn face is to be a “bad boy.” But, in the same way he is polarizing in the NFL, he would be a monster face to some and a monster heel to others.

Think Bret Hart toward the end of his WWF run when he was the biggest heel in USA and the biggest face in Canada. Think about how cool that was.

    Incredible possibilities..

nothing more exciting than fake sports

Oh wow…you mean wrestling is scripted? Gosh, we wouldn’t have known if you didn’t come in here and enlighten us.

  30. You mean “Not everybody makes the 53-man roster.” You guys screwed up the linked quote.

And I love the WWE personally. If you view as a TV drama man’s soap opera then it is really cool!!!

  31. Tim Tebow can wrestle under the name “The Christian”. They can create a “villian” character and call him “The Lion”.
