Ryan Swope still dealing with effects of college concussions

Cardinals rookie receiver Ryan Swope dropped in the draft because he had four concussions at Texas A&M. Now the effects of those concussions are holding him back at Organized Team Activities.

Teammate Larry Fitzgerald said on SiriusXM radio (via ESPN.com) that Swope has missed practice time while working through issues related to the concussions he suffered in college.

Fitzgerald’s comments are the first we’ve heard that Swope’s college concussions are still an issue, but they were definitely an issue for him heading into the draft. Mike Mayock said on NFL Network that Swope would have been a third-round pick if he had a clear medical history, but he fell to the sixth round because of those concussions.

Swope is a talented receiver with great speed who has the potential to be an excellent complement to Fitzgerald. Here’s hoping we hear a lot more about Swope on the field than in the training room.

  1. Damn… Was hoping this kid was going to be a steal. He can fly and catch. A nice combo! Hopefully he gets to where he can contribute.

  2. Swope was one of the better Receivers in this years Draft. I had him as the 4th best Wideout on my Draft board and was hoping Buffalo would take a chance on him in the middle of the 3rd or early 4th. Stereotypes had Swope as nothing more than a Slot Receiver, but intelligent scouts had him as a solid #2 Receiver. With his solid hands and surprising speed, he’ll draw a bunch of attention away from Larry Fitzgerald. Great pickup by the Cardinals.

  3. I was hoping the Lions would draft him, but perhaps their expeience with Jahvid Best kept them away. I really hope he does not rush things concussions are serious business. I wish him well and hope he is able to reach his potential.

  4. I get that playing in the NFL is a dream for many people and I can’t fault him at all for continuing to play. However, if he’s still feeling the concussion effects after months/ years, then maybe he should hang up the cleats for his future’s sake.

  5. Can you imagine what another concussion would do to these players that are experiencing effects after this amount of time?

He better be sporting one of those Gazoo helmets.

  6. Nice recieving corps the development of Andre Roberts last year was a nice surprise and if Malcom Floyd is even just a little better and Ryan Swope gets healthy Palmer will have plenty of targets without a recognizable TE. The offensive line had a lot of rookies get shoved into starting roles and with that expierence should be better not to mention Jonathan Cooper being added through the draft. The defense added depth and look to be even better this year. I’m telling you the Cards will be a force to be reckoned with, man the NFC West should be fun to watch this year.

  7. It’s not like concussions are not part of the NFL. Swope is and will be a steal. It’s his passion and AZ did there homework they were not scared away from his history and he will be fine. He isn’t needed from day one on a team that is pretty set in there WR anyway. He has time and we have the patience. Nothing wrong with using him in a rotation roll. Make no mistake about it those double coverages Larry draws is gonna make things easier for Floyd,Roberts and if Swope gets behind a DBACKS and Palmers long ball accuracy dude is gone to the house.
