Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers usually doesn’t have to worry about inclement weather, at least at home games.
But Rivers said Monday he’s considering wearing gloves during the regular season, after some good luck with them last year.
Via Tom Krasovic of U-T San Diego, Rivers said “there’s a good chance” he’ll be wearing gloves when he opens the regular season this year.
During OTAs, he’s gone with and without, and even worn one glove.
“But,” Rivers said, “there’s always that chance they’ll get ripped off and thrown to the sideline. You don’t have to pick one or the other.”
He wore them for the first time in Pittsburgh last year, and led an upset win in wet and cold conditions. Then back East against the Jets two weeks later, another win. He hasn’t thrown an interception in gloved games yet.
“I don’'t know if there’s any one guy that necessarily made me want to try it.” Rivers said. “Most notable is (Kurt) Warner, who wore them inside the dome in Arizona. I don’t know if there’s anything to it. It was going to be cold. I tried it out; we did all right.”
Warner’s not the only glove-wearer. Ben Roethlisberger has as well, and Giants backup David Carr used to color-coordinate his to his jersey (OK, maybe that’s a bad example).
But while the weather is an obvious factor, people have wondered if Rivers was concealing injuries before. If he’s taking steps in June to prepare for a gloved September, some skeptics are going to speculate anew.
