The Jets have made it clear their quarterback job is up for grabs. But no one has grabbed it yet, apparently.
Though offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said he hoped the Jets could determine on a starter quickly so there would be enough reps with the first offense, that’s not going to happen just yet.
Via Kim Jones of the NFL Network, Jets coach Rex Ryan said “I don’t think we’re close,” to making a decision.
That means we have many more weeks of wondering whether they’re going to go with Mark Sanchez or Geno Smith.
While there’s no real reason to declare prior to training camp, there is something to the idea of getting the chosen quarterback as much work as possible. The sooner they can make a decision, the better chance at familiarity (which based on last year, is needed).
The longer this goes, the more it feels like they’re waiting for Smith to do something to make it his own. Until that happens, however, they have to be careful about undermining whatever confidence Sanchez has left.
