The Patriots waived rookie running back Akeem Shavers on Wednesday.

The 5-foot-11, 203-pound Shavers signed with the Buccaneers after the draft, but he was waived on May 6. The Pats were assigned him on waivers.

Shavers, 23, rushed for 871 yards and six touchdowns on 181 carries for Purdue in 2012. He also caught 18 passes for 370 yards and three scores.

Shavers faced stiff competition for a roster spot in New England, which has Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden, LeGarrette Blount and Leon Washington at running back. Though he’s been released twice in his pro career, Shavers now at least has some exposure to the NFL. What’s more, being in NFL shape can’t hurt him as he tries to catch on elsewhere.
