Jets play paintball on last day of OTAs

Today was the last day of Organized Team Activities for the Jets. But instead of hitting the practice field, they played paintball.

The Jets haven’t explained exactly why they did the paintball excursion, but several players wrote on Twitter that a team-building paintball excursion had replaced the final day of OTAs.

There’s no word on how many Jets participated. OTAs are voluntary, and a paintball outing in place of OTAs would obviously be voluntary, too.

Jets coach Rex Ryan, who has faced criticism at times for creating a circus-like locker room atmosphere, has said that building team unity is an important goal. Perhaps players shooting paintballs at each other is the way to build a team.

Reporters were not invited, meaning we don’t have information about who’s the more accurate shot, Mark Sanchez or Geno Smith.

  1. I’m sorry but if you’re a bad team, you can’t do these things.

If you’re a team like the Pats,Packers, Ravens. etc. You can do this.

Bad teams can’t have fun, they have to work.
    Win=Have Fun
    Lose=More Work.

  2. Nice job by the Jets. A lot of positives coming out of Jets camp lately. With all the cap room & tons of young talent…this team is headed in a great direction

  3. Here comes a bunch of more comments about “this is why the Jets blah, blah, blah.” As if they don’t have mini-camps, training camp, and the whole pre-season to get ready.

That being said though, I wonder if Mike Goodson brought his own gun.

  4. This explains Marty Mornhinweg saying Sanchez’s accuracy was sky high…

  5. Any truth to the rumor that the entire team turned and shot Sanchez simultaneously? Hopefully in his white jeans.

The one time Mark Sanchez can feel good about giving the other team the (paint)ball. Good for him.

Yikes! That’s the worst joke ever.

    You liked it though =)

  8. Sanchez didn’t shoot anyone; his paint balls kept getting intercepted.

  9. Hey man… I despise the Jets. But even I have to admit this is pretty cool.

With bad call after bad selection after bad media session after bad pass and all the negative brouhaha the players have to deal with when being a Jet… I’d have to say this is a rare good call on their coaching staffs part.

Yeah you lose out on a day of teaching and learning.. but hey, maybe they needed this to loosen up and refocus. I’d be stoked if I read this about my team.

    lol ouch.

Finally tapping into Sanchez’s talents – hitting the other team with the ball

  12. Might as well, it won’t matter when the season starts. No need to practice.

  13. I think it is a cool idea to play some paintball. You get your exercise in, have some fun and do some team building.

Only clueless fools will criticize this. People who have never run a team before.

  14. I was there when they did it. There was a big old barn on the edge of the arena, and both tried, but failed, to hit the broad side of it…

  15. Over the whole course of the season, OTAs, minicamps, to take a few hours to build some cameraderie amongst the team is a valuable endeavor.
Do you think missing football per se for a day, to build some chemistry is not worth it?

You anti-Jets won’t agree, but it matters not, because when the season begins, 50% of you will be on the losing end weekly. so have at it now.

  16. It must be pure hell to be a Jets fan.

Team needs, everything. So Rex has ’em “bonding”.

    Yeeeesh!

  17. I’d just like to say that the joke earlier really was awful. It might have the worst punchline of any joke I have ever heard in my entire life. We are all stupider now for having read it.

  18. For some reason, I keep imagining the sight of Sanchez repeatedly fumbling away his gun.

  19. the jets sneezed. the jets took a piss. the jets went to the store. you media people are.. wait… i have the perfect analogy… YOU ARE THE AWFUL TWITTER TWEETERS!!!!! you know the ones that tweet about EVERY STINKING LITTLE THING that happens to them? “OMG I JUST SAW A CAT ON MY LAWN!!!”. ya, those guys. thats you, media.

  20. So the new CBA reduced the amount of OTAs and other offseason activities, yet Rex blows one of those limited number of days on paintball.

    LOLercoaster

When Ryan is fired halfway through the season this will be one of the reasons why.

  21. Wow. Can’t figure out why the Jets suck so bad. Outside of no talent on offense, little talent on defense, and when what is needed is practice, but instead, Rex takes them to play games? Can you say, #1 draft pick?

  22. This was all a huge misunderstanding. Woody told the FO he wanted them to paint a clear picture to the team what was expected this season, and Rex took it literally.

  23. Can’t believe only one Sanchez hitting linemen in the butt joke so far, I mean is that a setup or what?

  24. Jets are gonna be A LOT better than people think this year. The circus left when Tebow left.Don’t forget-Revis and Holmes were hurt early last year. The Jets were SMART for trading Revis because he WON’T be the same.Get ready for a surprise!

  25. It’s a good thing Tebow is not on the team anymore:

-They’d have to design a special paintball gun for him to hit the target.

-He’d be an easy target Tebowing after he got someone.

  26. Why do people care so much about this? So what these guys had a fun day. The real training camp is around the corner, so that is when they get to business.

I am not a Jets fan, and I personally think Jets will be good this year. Ivory is a beast, and now they do have a QB on staff that can run a more potent offensive scheme. Revis was a loss in talent, but still won’t justify the expenditure of $20m.

  27. I wonder if some narc will report it as a “contact” practice? I wouldn’t be surprised these days.

  28. Most of you are missing the point. This was just a way for Rex Ryan to get his team together to have some fun and bond. The type of unity that they’ve been missing for two years.

  29. A 6-10 team with no QB and a new OC doesn’t play paintball to build team unity.

What’s next a Mark Snachez / Rex Ryan “trust fall”.

  30. Well maybe a paintball league or chess league or even a book club would be good for this team since they suck at football.

You must be joking right? Reports are that they have NO QB that can hit the broad side of a barn. You need to get yourself prepared for reality.
