Sherrod Martin visiting with Rams

The Rams addressed their need at safety by selecting T.J. McDonald in the third round of the draft, but they may not be done adding players at the position.

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports that free agent Sherrod Martin is visiting with St. Louis on Monday. It’s Martin’s second visit with a Missouri team this offseason after he met with the Chiefs earlier this offseason.

Martin started for the Panthers in 2010 and 2011 before moving into a reserve role last season. His year then ended early because of a torn ACL and MCL in early December, an injury that has surely limited his suitors the last few months and could keep him out into training camp and/or the regular season.

That’s likely part of what the Rams are interested in learning during their meeting with Martin. The team is awfully young at safety at this point and Martin would give them some experienced depth at the very least, but only if he’s healthy and that’s hardly a given after such a serious injury.

  1. as a Panthers fan, I had and still have high hopes for Martin. He has ball hawk abilities and can deliver a blow, but his problem has always been taking the worst possible angles at tackling; therefore he gets schooled A LOT… still young and has potential for sure.

  2. The Ram’s certainly need a LOT of help at that position. I’m kind of surprised they haven’t brought back Quinten Mikell on a contract near the veteran minimum.

  3. I’m fine adding veterans safeties with coverage skills even though they have sub par run support skills. It’s still early to judge them until we know by training camp or by pre-season.

  4. If he can pass the physical and be able to get into the practices to show he still has the abilities he has shown in the past, he’d be a good addition. Having such a young group of safeties, the Rams would certainly make use of him. At least until T.J. McDonald and possibly Cody Davis and Cannon Smith can get up to speed. I think, Matt Daniels and Rodney McLeod’s days maybe numbered. The Rams did bring in a good group of UDFA’s, with some talent too. But, Fisher may be looking for help elsewhere too apparently.
