Geno Smith might get package of plays if he’s not starting

Geno Smith is going to get his chance, one way or another.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday his rookie quarterback was going to get all the reps with the first offense today, as part of their quarterback rotation, via Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

They’ve advertised this one as an open competition with Mark Sanchez from the start, so that’s not necessarily a surprise.

What was a bit eye-opening was Ryan saying that they might also put together a package of plays specific to Smith even if he isn’t the starter.

While Smith is mobile, he’s not a perfect fit to run read-option plays, as he was more of a downfield passer in college.

And trying to gin up a way to get him on the field even if the alleged meritocracy of a competition doesn’t put him there as the starter sounds vaguely familiar.

It’s almost as if they tried it a year ago, with another quarterback who wasn’t ready or able to do the job on his own.
