Cowboys will “probably” look at extension for Sean Lee

With the offseason workout schedule coming to a close, players have some time off before the start of training camp.

A lack of practice doesn’t mean all activity comes to a halt, however. Injured players will still be rehabbing, coaches will still be making plans and front offices will still be working on new contracts for players they’d like to keep around for a few more years. Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee is entering the final year of his contract and executive vice president Stephen Jones said that there’s a good chance the team will start working on a new deal for him.

“Historically, we look at guys going into the last years of their contracts,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “Sean is going into the last year of his contract, so that’s probably something we’ll look at.”

The Cowboys defense was more effective last season when Lee was in the lineup, but he was lost for the season in Week Seven with a torn ligament in his big toe. Signing him to an extension now wouldn’t guarantee Lee’s health in future seasons, but it would likely come at a lower price than one reached if Lee plays the entire 2013 season at the same level he was at before getting hurt.
