Alex Green vaults past Packers’ rookies, for now

Sure, offseason workouts are largely meaningless. But they meant enough in Green Bay to prompt the team to put a third-year veteran who tore an ACL as a rookie and underperformed in 2012 at the top of the tailback depth chart.

Per Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, running back Alex Green currently owns the starting job, ahead of second-rounder Eddie Lacy, fourth-rounder Jonathan Franklin, DuJuan Harris, and James Starks.

Green struggled in 2012 to recover from his torn ACL, the other extreme of the Adrian Peterson spectrum.

“It’s like if you got a bruise or something and at first, you can’t really move your arm but over time it starts to loosen up and eventually you get back to where you were before,” Green said. “I’d wake up and I was just in pain. Taking pills and worrying how it can get better, but knowing it was getting weaker, it was frustrating.”

Green still has a long way to go to become the Week One starter; it’s a five-way race for reps. But Green and the coaching staff feel good about his chances.
