Sunday’s report that former Bills quarterback Jim Kelly does not need chemotherapy or radiation to further treat the cancer found in his jaw that led to surgery to remove part of the jaw earlier this month has been confirmed by Kelly himself.
Kelly met the media Monday at the opening of his football camp and said that doctors have told him that the surgery was a success in terms of removing all traces of cancer. Kelly will continue to be monitored every couple of months to guard against a recurrence, but, for now, he’s got a clean bill of health. Kelly said that the support of the Buffalo community meant a lot to him.
“I want to thank personally everybody from this area,” said Kelly, via the team’s website. “This community has rallied around me when I played for the Bills, when my son Hunter was diagnosed [with Krabbe disease, which took Hunter’s life in 2005] and of course my latest setback with cancer. The community’s prayers there are not enough words to describe the feeling in my heart and my family’s heart how much it means to me to have people take the time to email me, write me hundreds and hundreds of letters. Those prayers have been answered because of the things that I don’t have to do now.”
It’s very good news about Kelly and hopefully future scans will return more of it in the future.
