Tiki Barber calls Warren Sapp “an idiot” for Strahan comments

There certainly has been no love lost between Warren Sapp and members of the New York Giants in the past. Sapp has downplayed the accomplishments of Michael Strahan for years and continued last week by saying that he would put Simeon Rice in the Hall of Fame before electing Strahan.

Now one of Strahan’s former teammates has decided to take issue with Sapp.

According to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, former Giants running back Tiki Barker didn’t take too kindly to the comments regarding Strahan.

“Warren’s an idiot,” Barber said. “He just wants to say things to be idiotic. I played with Stray for my whole career. He is the greatest of the great. He is a great teammate, he kept things light, but on game day he was as serious as a heart attack and it showed in his play.”

Sapp said that Strahan’s numbers were inflated because he lined up on the left side of the defensive line and was therefore going against right tackles as opposed to left tackles for the majority of his career.

“Warren doesn’t know, never played with him,” Barber said. “I don’t put any credence in his opinion. “I hope Stray doesn’t let it bother him. I don’t think it does.”

It is a bit humorous to see Barber sticking up for Strahan, however. Barber once ripped Strahan telling him “he should just be quiet” when it came to comments regarding contract negotiations with the Giants.

  1. Yep! Couldn’t agree more! Sapp should be in the hall of shame. No class and the biggest hater in the NFL. Not mention he’s overrated…I mean he was ok, but he wasn’t THAT good.

  2. Note to Warren Sapp- when you wind up in an argument with Tiki Barber and he sounds more rational and the better person than you are you may have a problem.

  3. If this ends with Sapp’s old teammate Ronde Barber ripping Tiki, the world will be a better place.

  4. …also for the Rice comparison, stats aren’t everything but if you at the years 96-05 when both players were in their peak Rice did outperform Strahan in terms of sacks. They played different defenses so the stats aren’t directly comparable obviously. Why Rice doesn’t even get a HOF mention is strange, I’m not arguing that he he should get in, but to not even get on a ballot seems odd to me.

However Rice was not the most likeable person, his comments on Tillman still bother me.

  5. And Sapp calls Barber an idiot for…well, take your pick of just about anything Tiki’s done over the last 6 years.

  6. “Warren’s an idiot,” Barber said. “He just wants to say things to be idiotic. I played with Stray for my whole career. He is the greatest of the great. He is a great teammate, he kept things light, but on game day he was as serious as a heart attack and it showed in his play.”

    Tiki Barber said that?!

    I’m flabbergasted.

  7. Tiki! Way to stand up Brother!

You and Stray had your differences.

Real Giants fans still love you Tiki. Warren Sapp is an idiot woman beater.

  8. Strahan is an All-Time Great and a class act! His day will come and he will be honored in the ProFootball Hall of Fame, as he should.

  9. Sapp was a great player but he really is a moron, I’d pick strahan over him any day. P.S. tiki are you still on tv?

  10. Wow. For once I agree with Tiki. We all know Crapp loves to flap his gums and make those stupid facial expressions. He loves the attention.

  11. And Tiki never played with Simeon Rice. What’s the difference between what Sapp is saying and Tiki is saying?

    Go away Tiki.

  12. The on air “Experts” are a joke anymore. All they try to do is out “real” each other.

Sapp does it, they all do it. Just be overly critical.

Huge symptom of having football coverage all year, they have to spice it up.

  13. Irresistible force vs immovable object. Both of these men are roundly hated. Whose side will you imbeciles take?

  14. Warren IS an idiot. He was a great player, don’t get me wrong. However his analysis is usually mostly wrong, personal and driven by his absurdly inflated ego.

  15. Oh really Tiki??!! Sticking up for the G-men family now? Have you finally turned off everyone around you. Trying to rebuild the smoldering burning bridges left in your wake are we…..lol?? Still glad to see ya sticking up for your fellow Giants tho its a start.

  16. Oh, btw…Warren is right. Strahan was VERY over rated. He was a system player & on his greatest accomplishment it was given to him by that other blowhard Brett Favre.

  17. Who keeps sticking a microphone in front of that jerks face. I mean Tiki. He threw his whole team under the bus. Plus his fine work at NBC and of course his epic comeback last year. Go away.

  18. Last I checked, Sapp is payed to make these comments and Barber was fired for everyone hating his…

  19. Strahan was great but tiki is the idiot. Sapp does have valid points but you can’t say ‘what if’ Rice had played longer. Sapp doesn’t even need to mention Strahan’s name because he is simply in a different class but I do get a kick out of it.

  20. So Strahan lined up mostly over right tackle? Sounds like he had to play the run more often than if he was playing weak side DE. But to have the endurance to play the run from the left end position and put up spectacular sack totals like he did only shows how well he played. Sapp needs to gtfo. The guy is an idiot, always has been. Coming from a Cowboy fan, recognizing how great of a player Strahan was.

  21. “It is a bit humorous to see Barber sticking up for Strahan, however. Barber once ripped Strahan telling him “he should just be quiet” when it came to comments regarding contract negotiations with the Giants”
That is neither humorous nor noteworthy. There is absolutely zero connection that can be made there between the two comments. Tiki was upset that Strahan was meddling in his contract negotiation–the business side of the NFL. And most current players would agree with Tiki on that one. Players don’t talk about other players’ contracts.

His comments about Strahan’s level of play are completely independent…and also spot on. Sapp is a tool and should be off TV.

  22. I don’t understand why the NFL network still has this goon working for them! Yes he was a great NFL player but off the field he’s terrible. Please NFL network fire him.

  23. I’d say that Tiki needs to shut up, as he burned out his welcome in New York and no one wanted him anymore, even when he became broke and wanted to play for minimum salaries…

BUT… Warren Sapp also went broke (wink, wink) and filed bankruptcy…

Sapp is a Hall of Famer and can have his opinion, Barber? He’s nowhere close to the top of his profession, hell, he’s the 2nd best athlete in his family, to Warren’s teammate!

I wonder if Ronde will reply, telling Tiki that he needs to be quiet and not be an idiot, that he was teammates with Sapp and that Tiki just doesn’t know?

  24. The irony with Sapp’s statement is that Strahan should have gotten into the Hall of Fame before Sapp. I’m still shocked that Sapp got in himself.

  25. Sapp has no business being an analyst of any sort, let alone an NFL analyst. He’s horrible, inaccurate and obnoxious. Being an “idiot” would be an upgrade.

  26. Warren Sapp always says the dumb things. He’s a hall of fame player. Does he really need to be ripping on other players?

Doesn’t Michael Strahan still have the record for most sacks in a season?

He also did it as a 4-3 DE and not this 3-4 cheating crap teams run these days.

It doesn’t matter if you play LDE or RDE.

  27. On one hand I think Tiki is in the perfect position to judge being as an idiot should recognize one of their own n the other he’s an idiot so why would I trust his opinion?
If Warren doesn’t know because he never played with Strahan then who is Tiki to “correct him” when Barber never played with Rice?
It’s funny how everyone attacks the simple version of what Warren said “Rice deserves it over Mike” but they can’t come up with a solid counterpoint to his reasoning for saying that.
“Oh but Mike played in the tougher NFC West” ignoring that Rice averaged over 10 sacks per year in that same NFC west while on a BAD Cards team, that point also sinks the whole “anyone could look good when they join a great D” garbage.

  28. Ever since he retired Tiki hasn’t had anything good to say and acts like he has a stick up his a$$. You know it would have turned out differently if he’d played for the other team in town. J-E-T-S! JETS! JETS! JETS!

  29. Rice might have been a better pass rusher, during the 12 % of the plays he went all out. Unfortunately for Mr. Sapp, his buddy didn’t have his motor. Warren should be concentrating on his Hall of Fame speech instead of trying to get fired from the only job he has left.

  30. Can’t stand you warren, even when you’re not on TV. And this is pretty much the reason why. You just reek of irrelevance.

  31. For ounce Tiki’s right, Sap is just a jealous blowhard whose career won’t ever come close to Strahan’s.

Not only do his sack numbers prove how good he was, he also played against the run as good as any DE in the league.

Great teammate, captain and leader, longevity, sack record, good role model, every down player and Superbowl champion, puts mike in HOF and one of the best DE in my book.

  32. Die hard Giants fan here. Yeah I know Tiki has been a jerk, but maybe this is him finally trying to get back in the good graces of Giants fans by sticking up for his old teammate. He is absolutely correct about everything he said about Strahan. I also live in Tampa now and even Bucs fans think Sapp is an idiot. Wouldn’t be shocked if Ronde has told Tiki things about Sapp. The fan favorite in this town was Alstott and everyone I met that knew or has met Sapp say he is a jerk. Tiki helped run us into a few postseasons and I hope people never forget the player he was too b/c they always think about the post career comments. Tiki was probably right about what he said about Eli at that time, but you still keep it in the locker room. That’s why Eli is class because he has NEVER pointed fingers. Tiki also should have kept quiet about Coughlin b/c the man fixed his fumbling problem and Barber had his best years under him. I also remember when Hamilton told Tiki to give some of his money back then when he talked about Strahan being greedy, lol. The early Fassel days when the offense and defense pointed fingers, lol. Thank God the Giants are what they are now. Class owners, GM, head coach, QB, etc. Hope Tiki can one day publicly apologize to everyone he has let down for his behavior.

  33. Sapp was dead on with his comments about a mediocre DE that was considered a bust for FOUR years until they switched his position. He played 4 years longer than Rice, and didn’t play against the premier linemen in the league. The Hall of Fame obvisiously sees it; otherwise, Strahan would have been a first ballot inductee like Sapp. Tiki is just trying to get back into good graces with Giant Nation. He is clearly the dumb twin.

  34. “Just be quiet” was so incendiary! I hope that Stragan can one day see past such a terrible gesture. One day. Wow, where do we go from here?

  35. Sapp is more annoying than Strahan and Rice combined.I guess NFL execs feel sorry for him cause hes broke is why he continues to be an analyst.Same with McNaab. And Michael Irvin.ENOUGH ALREADY!

  36. Tiki who? They say twins are a like. Well Tiki blows that that theory out of the water. Poor Ronde!!!

  37. Hard to argue with what Tiki said. Sapp really is a complete moron and has no business having a job in the media.

  38. My guess is enough years have now passed that Tiki in retrospect he knows he made the same mistakes Sapp is making now with some ridiculous comments and can see it from the other side. Hopefully this will help bring Tiki back into the fair weather Giants fans hearts. True NYG fans know what a good player he was and the amount of sacrifice he left on the field every Sunday. It is a shame he is booed and reviled by many. The man was a very good football player.

  39. Can’t believe I’m saying this but. ……Tiki is right. Warren Sapp is an idiot. I guess it’s like that ole saying…..idiot recognizes idiot !!!!

  40. You know who also lined up on the left side or wherever the weakest opponent was? Reggie White. You know who not only lined up on the right side but also played in a 3-4 for a portion of his career? All-time sack leader, Bruce Smith. Yet most people claim Reggie White was better than Bruce Smith.

  41. “Playing in the NFL is the equivolent of being a slave on a plantation” -Warren Sapp

  42. The only thing Sapp knows how to do is run his mouth! And Strahan sucks on that morning show that he’s on. So, now you have two truths and the rest is all bs.

  43. onebucplace says: Jun 24, 2013 11:23 PM

Here’s what I know, Sapp is a first ballot HOF’er, Strahan was not.

    And Simeon Rice was…?

  44. First; Sapp is an idiot and a glorified cheap shot artist.

Second; Sapp is right. Strahan is overrated. The NFC East was a chump division for most of his career. Strahan did play most snaps on the left, which matched him up against Right Tackles and usually one vs one. Strahan’s sack record is also completely bogus. He was literally spoon-fed sacks at the end to put him over the top.

So while Sapp is an idiot and a guy most fans loath, he is right about Strahan.

  45. Sapp is an idiot. Didn’t this fool have to sell his shoe collection because he’s broke after earning millions? He also said Suh is a terrible DT, ha, good one, if we released Suh then 31 teams would put a claim on waivers. It’s as ignorant as Carter saying Megatron isn’t a top 5 receiver. ‘Expert’ analysts.

  46. Why no one talks about Rice is simple: He just wasn’t that good.

With Stray you had to game plan for him you HAD to double team him and make him work. It wasn’t a matter of IF he was gonna get a sack it was WHEN.

Fat Sapp is just a hater. Worst HOF inductee of all time. He has done nothing positive for the game. He’s mad Stray gets more attention then him and even if Stray is a 10th ballot HOFer they will still remember Stray before they do of Sapp.

  47. Yes , Sapp is a fool! Tiki is a fool! I doubt that Ronde will get anywhere near this. He has more class in his little finger than both of these fools have in their whole bodies combined.

  48. tiki is a dbag

ill never forget his comments towards ex team mate eli manning saying his attempts at showing leadership in the locker romm “were comical”. Of course titty quit season prior to the gmens 1st super bowl title and im sure there are some regrets and sour grapes there. he should just go away

  49. Tiki’s argument about, “not playing with Strahan” so Sapp wouldn’t know… The same can be said about Tiki not playing with Simeon.

  50. Warren Sapp has the right to say whatever he wants. That is because he was the greatest ever to play his position, the 3 technique. That is why when NFL Teams go to draft a DT, everybody says “We are looking to get the next Warren Sapp.” So basically he’s the man.

    GO BUCS!!

  51. Sapp is an idiot but he’s like in the top 3 at his postion to ever play the game. He deserved first ballot hall of fame. Strahan, was a great player and I would say during his era he was probably the best, he led the league in sacks 2 times. Hall of fame is getting smarter on who they put in first ballots. Sapp is a GOAT player and Strahan isn’t.

  52. i know giants fans hate him. as well as my family despises him but i miss the guy. arguably our best RB ever, miss watching tiki cut up defenses on his way to 200 yard games. hopefully wilson can be better. STILL HAVE A FAN IN NY TIKI!

  53. Why doesn’t Warren Sapp worry about paying his bills rather than who should or shouldn’t be in the hall of fame. Dude filed bankruptcy while pulling a heavy 7 figure salary from NFL network. Way to own up to your responsibilities dbag!!

  54. Rice did play in a 4-3 and he had more sacks than strahan more often than not he wasnt as strong against the run but was a better pass rusher i am an eagles fan who wstched strahan line up against runyan at RT never lining up against Tra Thomas or any LT they r far better pass blockers. I watched Reggie White so i have seen great HOF DE play neither should b mentioned in the same breath as White i think both men should b in the hall. There r only a handful of ends with better numbers than both

  55. Sapp is a D-Bag…always has been, always will be. He is just pissed because his networth is -$1 million dollars and he still owes the IRS $7. He also owes back child support to children with 4 different women. Tiki on the other hand (besides a semi-nasty divorce) is still worth $14 million and Strahan is worth $35 million.

  56. Outside of a couple really good seasons Sapp wasnt a HOF player he was very good but not great outside of his 18 sack season he never had big numbers not that stats are everything but the greats usually have great numbers to go with being a great player where stats dont show

  57. I see Sapp has been called an idiot, baffon, clown, classless and a host of other names. Be sure you call him a first ballot Hall of Famer too.

  58. Sapp was a good football player. He is not a good commentator. Calling him an idiot is not fair – since Sapp is obviously intelligent and articulate.

It would be more accurate to describe Sapp as a boor and a blowhard. That would be fair.

I was happy last year when the NFL Network briefly fired Sapp. It is tedious listening to Sapp and watching him use facial expressions and grimaces to get his point across.

I was sad when he re-appeared on the NFL Network and continued his boorish campaign.

  59. There’s little argument that Sapp is an idiot and is off-base about Strahan. I suppose it’s ironic that an idiot is the one calling out an idiot.

They both need to shut up.
