On Wednesday, the New England Patriots announced that they no longer want Aaron Hernandez on the team. On Thursday, the other 31 NFL teams made it official that they don’t want Hernandez either.
Hernandez passed through the NFL’s waiver system and went unclaimed.
That comes as no surprise, coming after Hernandez was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Hernandez, who was denied bail today and faces possible life imprisonment if convicted, may never get out of jail.
But Hernandez clearing waivers is another extraordinary development in a week that has been full of them. When Hernandez signed his $41 million contract with the Patriots 10 months ago, he looked like one of the league’s brightest young stars. Now he’s a player no NFL team will touch.
