Patriots “extremely disappointed” with Dennard’s arrest

Dennard has been arrested and accused of driving drunk in Lincoln where he once starred as a Nebraska defensive back. Lincoln police say 24-year-old Dennard was pulled over southeast of downtown Lincoln just before 2 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013. Lincoln police say Dennard failed a field sobriety test. When Aaron Hernandez was arrested, the Patriots spoke loudly with their actions by cutting him almost immediately. With Alfonzo Dennard’s arrest, the Patriots are taking a more cautious approach.

After initially remaining mum on the news that Dennard had been arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, the team released a statement that looked more or less like the boilerplate statements that teams usually release when players are arrested.

“The New England Patriots are extremely disappointed to learn of Alfonzo Dennard’s arrest. We take this matter very seriously and are working to get more information on the incident,” the statement read.

The fact that the statement says nothing about Dennard getting cut means he still has a chance of saving his job. But the fact that Dennard was already on probation for punching a police officer means that he’s facing the possibility of missing training camp while he’s in jail, or missing the start of the season while he’s suspended by the NFL. Which means his job may not be safe for long.
